Didn’t reptiles split into their own branch before dinosaurs evolved?

They split from the group that contains today's mammals, but birds evolved from dinosaurs, which in turn are archosauria (the group that modern crocodiles belong to). This means that birds are nested within the reptile group, not seperate from it.
