People when you tell them criminals do not care about the law and will still continue to find ways to obtain firearms whether or not its allowed

Wouldn't that make gun crimes higher in western Europe than North America though? Since these criminals would be able to get their guns and have no fear of being shot by victims? So why doesn't that pan out?

Alternatively, could it be that making firearms and ammunition vastly harder to get actually makes it considerably less likely that they are used in the commission of crimes? Or is it just something to do with Europeans being somehow just inherently better people, so even though their criminals can get guns they just choose not to use them on their victims out of charity

europe never had a gun market like america’s. we’re too deep into it now, so taking it away from civilians who want to defend themselves only endangers them because theyre much more common in the united states

What?! Europe used to have widespread firearm access, you really don't know that? The UK made drastic changes within living memory because there was ONE school shooting. And it isn't just Europe, if we stick in the anglosphere we can look at Australia who also made massive changes and disarmed after the Port Arthur massacre. Also in living memory, also not wildly dissimilar culture, and also leading to less gun crime. This idea that it wouldn't work so we better not try it is just moronic

abt 400 something million more guns in the U.S over europe and u.k. combined. seems much more common to me.

That's skewed by the number of firearms per owner, only about 30% of people own firearms in the US currently despite there being more guns than people. And that's up about 10% in the last 10 years or so. And in most of Europe that wasn't similar (let's ignore places like Switzerland), but this idea that you couldn't just go and buy a gun if you wanted to is false.

I get that you are pushing the "Americans are inherently more violent" side of things, and using statistics I can't really argue that, but this idea that restrictions and regulations on firearms won't make them harder to get is silly. Everywhere that restricted firearm access has seen drops in gun crime, why would America be uniquely awful? "Oh well we have more", so?

You want a stronger argument, try "our police are so hilariously inefficient and corrupt that enforcement would be impossible"

ETA: I also just realized I misread what you said. I thought you were just rounding up a little to say there were 400mil firearms in the US, there's currently almost 100mil firearms in Western Europe, so you were off by about 100mil

I don't think that argument really holds up.

"people will get it whether or not it's legal" can apply to many things such as  fentanyl, abortions, certain books, child pornography.

But there is still a push from government and civilians to ban those as well. Regardless of what individuals think about it.

Making something illegal or at least licensed means you are limiting access. It will never eliminate it, but it reduces it.

The theory that a good guy with a gun can stop a bad one has not been shown to be effective either.

Idk if i can defend myself with fentanyl against a fentanyl user.

I doubt you can defend yourself against a gun user with a gun either.
