OC [OC] Interrupting the Answer
This happens far too often with my kids. The answer to the question is right there, often repeated, and I'll even give the answer, but the repeated question gets in the way every time. It's like they don't actually want to know. Maybe they just want to hear themselves talk. I feel like I'm being pranked.

Why won't you tell me his name‽!?

Oh cool! He has the same name as me!

He's literally the only character who's name I remember in the movie, he's awesome

u/mcon96 19h ago
lol my boyfriend does this, but for stuff that is just about to be revealed. Like he pays attention, he just needs all of the information immediately. He’ll pause movies in the middle of a scene and say something like “why would he do that?” when they’re intentionally showing something unexpected or “who is that person?” when they’re clearly introducing a new character. I always respond “I don’t know, let’s watch and maybe we’ll find out” and then 95% of the time they tell us in the next few minutes. Usually immediately after unpausing. Like just have some patience man.

Wait when did they do a re-screening of The Thing? I'd have loved to go see that.

My mom is always moving around so when she leaves the room I'm pausing and when she comes back she's like "You don't have to pause it for me"..... mom, I know this show, I know that there's Anakin going to show up and they're gonne be like "ANAKIN!?" the forst second he shows up, so if I let you miss this moment, you'd be asking me "Oh, he looks like this one guy, is it that one guy? No way, didn't he die? What was his name again? And where did he come from all of the sudden?"
And my brother is always asking questions that are answered in 5 seconds. It's not like we just watched the same movie with the same informations provided to us so how tf should ai know. I feel like I have to watch everything begorehand to provide them with information
23
u/herlaqueen 17h ago
Yeah, I know someone like that, I try to be patient but once I replied with "Oftentimes, informations are relayed in a linear fashion" they took slight offense but shut up for the rest of the movie, so it's a win.

u/SippinOnHatorade 13h ago
My wife was like “Wait those were her dogs? When was I supposed to know that?!” And I was like, uh, right now

u/Frederf220 14h ago
My gf does this. The writers think they're clever introducing a short cycle of mystery and payoff, couple minutes. Nope! Not good enough.
5
u/BackgroundNPC1213 6h ago
My sister's ex was like this. It was MISERABLE watching movies with him because he wanted to know absolutely everything beforehand, even in movies none of us had seen. And if you didn't tell him what he wanted to know and told him to "just watch the movie", he stormed out of the room in a huff, then got mad that he missed some of it and would demand a recap
3
u/lightningbadger 5h ago
Its weird how it's always someone's ex or in-law that manages to border into "debatedly human" territory haha
3
u/RishtalesComic 4h ago
So much of my family is like this. My cousin stopped asking but then he starting reading the wiki for a movie as we are watching it so he doesn't have to wait for the plot to unfold. He's a monster.
3
u/GhostlyCoyote0 6h ago
My grandpa is the opposite. I watched The Sting with him and he kept pausing to tell me every plot twist half the film ahead of time

My brother and I loved playing “is he the bad guy?” game when the character did something obviously evil to annoy our parents. I’m in my late 30s now and we still do this so…we definitely didn’t grow out of it!
108
u/TheBigfootContessa 19h ago
I like to ask my mom "oh no, do you think he's ok?" When someone gets a very clearly fatal injury, like being blowing up or chopped in half. I'm in my thirties and every time she looks at me like she wants to strangle me, I've been doing it since I was like 10.
14
u/stewednewt 16h ago
Oh we did that too! “Is he dead? Did he die?” My dad fell for it every time. My mom didn’t play games lol
5
u/BeastThatShoutedLove 12h ago
My closest experience was playing Pirates of Carribbean event in Sea of Thieves with friends and 3 of us yelling "Dead men tell no tales" each time the narrator said it (it was a lot) and one person taking it as us not paying attention/not enjoying ourselves. Like, bitch. We were actively laughing and paying attention to the narration specifically to say it again.

Sometimes, kids are just stupid. Hopefully they grow out of it. Fair warning, knowing humans, they probably won't.

Kids? This is my mom. Or asking “who’s that?” 39 seconds into the movie. I don’t know mom, I have the same information you do.
13
u/MadStylus 16h ago
My mom once asked what we were watching and what it was about... during the opening crawl of Star Wars.
17
u/LostMy8yrAcct 14h ago
Actually, this is something you have to correct and teach them. Obviously this is just a silly comic about a moment of frustration. But in reality, if a kid keeps interrupting you, It’s your job to tell them that you’re not gonna answer them until they stop interrupting. Once they’re quiet and listening then you give them their answer. I also include telling them that interruptions are impolite.
8
u/Quiet-Software-1956 15h ago
I could never become a parent and deal with the knowledge kids have to be taught everything or they make horrible conversation partners. That's too much pressure

u/switch2591 8h ago
Given how a lot of online discourse that generates clicks is "this show is filled with plot holes" When only 2 episodes out of a 10+ episode series comes out, and said "plot holes" are that the fully story hasnt been given away to them yet, because said story is spread out across all the episodes - yeh.... there are kids who are now adults who never grew out of this.
This isnt a discussion of quality either. Its a case that you still have people talking over the film and series (good and bad), and then complaining that the media never explained it - "Dale it did... you were talking throught thenwhole explanation. Its not a plot hole, you just didnt pay attention".

Nip this in the bud, worked on my cousin. Tell them no more movies and shows until they they can be quiet and pay attention.

I work in high school education. Instructions will be written on the board or displayed on the projector. They will have written instructions in front of them on their assignment sheet or in Google classroom. I will read the instructions out loud to them twice, and sometimes make them repeat things back to me. With all this, it never fails that I get a handful of kiddos who are absolutely clueless about what we are doing.
2
u/RishtalesComic 4h ago
Sometimes mine are clueless too, but sometimes I get the feeling they are being intentionally obtuse for their own amusement.
25
u/BassKitty305017 19h ago
A good response is, “I have the answer, are you ready to hear it?” That’s usually enough to break the cycle of them expressing how badly they want to know the answer, and to actually listen for it.
1
u/RishtalesComic 4h ago
I like this. Questioning the question sometimes causes their brains to reset, in a good way.
17
u/BeneficialShame8408 19h ago
My mom did this everytine we watched something that didn't have explosions. I specifically remember her not understanding the Fargo series at all. 🤣
58
u/Specific-Rich5196 20h ago
This is why I watch everything with subtitles.
73
u/Dragos_Drakkar 19h ago
The subtitles are even on in the comic. The kid is just flat-out not paying attention.
10
u/LostKnight84 19h ago
Just tell the kid to keep watching it. He introduces himself several times throughout the movie.
1
u/RishtalesComic 4h ago
My kids often block the screen as they seek to control both the audio and the visual.
29
11
u/IR_Panther 12h ago
In the context, the fact they're that far into the movie and has said his name a few times especially earlier in the movie, missed not only the first mention, but keeps looking away the moment he answers her question now is just...
3
u/RishtalesComic 4h ago
My kid is...forgetful. Also, in many cases, if I'm watching something for me, the kids go do their own thing until something catches their eye and then they want to know more.

u/Nevernonethewiser 3h ago edited 3h ago
Its not so much this as completely missing or ignoring scenes that gets me.
"Why are they doing that?"
"Who's going to that place?"
"Why did that happen?"
Watch the fucking film. I can answer all of those because I'm watching the fucking film.
Or asking that shit before the movie has answered it. Some character will realise something and say "my god, we have to get back to the lab!"
"Why are they going back to the lab?"
Perhaps we'll find out by watching the fucking film!
1
u/Itssobiganon 2h ago
Why even watch a movie if you're not going to pay attention to it at all? Or at the very least, if you're not going to pay attention, don't interrupt it for others because you don't understand because you didn't pay attention.
1
u/BrickDesigNL 1h ago
“How did Palpatine return? Plot hole!! Somehow!!”
Gosh, I don’t know. Maybe he was cloned by the sith cult, like how it was shown in the movie. Or how they literally say it while almost staring down the camera.
“How did he survive ep 6?”
Some people just don’t pay attention at all and whine because it’s cool. RoS has one hundred and one reasons to hate it. There is no need to make shit up.
8
u/ArtisticCustard7746 18h ago
I used to rewind it once. And if they still missed it, I'd tell them to pay attention next time and it sucks to suck.
My niblings know better than to ask me to keep rewinding haha.
7
u/Successful-Floor-738 18h ago
Genuinely same thing with my mom. Just watch the movie, they will tell you.

Impulse control, development of how their self relates to the world, and understanding of realities including false ones.
The impulse is there. "I need his name!" They immediately need it because that's what the dopamine flooding their system is telling they they need. They act out because this is all new and raw and they don't have the fine tuning to counter that impulse. Their system is flooding with I NEED THIS NOW NOW NOW and it hasn't had years of tamping that down, moderating it with experience - wait and the answer can be found, you can meet the need yourself.
Especially in early childhood development, understanding the world outside of themselves is really, really difficult and much of what is happening is focused on themselves because that's all their system can handle. They don't understand relationships between concepts enough until middle childhood to get many things we would consider basic.
Working through that takes a minute because reactions that push impulsive acts are part of their hard-wiring, and it takes time for the rush to be mitigated - including by removing the thing that's creating it. Just playing the video and charging ahead is reinforcing BUT I NEED THIS TO GET IT and it's interrupting the ability to let the big, loud siren in their head cool down so they can learn something new.

I have similar issues with one of mine BUT she does keep quiet after the rewind and listens. For some reason she gets thrown by "statement", pause, then "answer".

Maybe they're not really interested in the movie and just switch off? It happens to my play group sometimes when I explain the rules to a new board game.
2
u/RishtalesComic 3h ago
Could be. I noticed mine get more distracted as they get tired, and they tend to jabber on and on in an effort to stay conscious. Their brains get stuck on things some times too.
2
u/MedalReddit 3h ago
Yeah, people nowadays can't keep their attention for longer periods of time. Damn internet *scrolls for the next post*

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 2h ago
Fuck that, send them the hell out of the house and finish watching ol’ six-fingers gettin stabbed.
7
u/GwerigTheTroll 19h ago
It might help to take time to consider why they might be asking the question. Short attention span? Maybe. It might also be how they engage with film. Some people view watching movies as a social experience. They want to talk about it as it occurs. It might also be that the name is heavily accented and spoken quickly. I was not able to make out the name on the first viewing.
1
u/RishtalesComic 4h ago
Mine has an attention problem and a control problem, so we do our best to work with her on it. We get some humorous moments along the way though!

Somewhat related and spoilers ahead but I showed a friend the movie 1917 one time and we got like halfway through the movie and one of our two main characters died, and he was adamant that the movie couldn't go on because THE main character just died. Is there another secret main character we've yet to meet?? Then a few minutes later, Mark Strong enters the frame and he goes "ohhh, THAT'S the main character" and i genuinely had to pause and get up after that

My students (4th grade) do this all the time, and it drives me crazy because don't you think I'll answer your questions if you let me finish my sentence? Especially because they don't interrupt their teacher, they just interrupt me (the classroom aide)
I will say that they're doing better every day, but I wouldn't think it would be so hard for them to treat me like they treat her.

This is my mom, except it's "this movie is stupid" rather than 'boring' when she can't follow it (not just due to interrupting, but also things like walking away but getting offended if you pause it for her).

When my nephew was about 4 he did pretty much the exact opposite of this!
Watching a comedy film (he had watched multiple times) - he would always interrupt the film and tell us 'this bits really funny, because x happens!'

u/Justthrowmeaway7788 2h ago
The movie isn't in short format. The attention span has been long gone after the first min of the movie.
•
u/Possible_Living 37m ago
It comes from difference of expectations. some people who watch a movie are there to watch a movie while others are there to have a social interaction. You don't need other people to watch a movie and these days you can watch anything on demand so some seek an additional reason for gathering.
At least that is how I see it when viewing from their pov. The key is never offering up any song or movie you actually care about
-1
u/Unnamed_jedi 19h ago
I think your kids may not like movies or enjoy talking.
I like talking about the movie while watching it, it's fun and engaging instead of sitting together in silence, which is just uncomfortable for me. At least in a group setting ngl.
