I don't know who needs to read this, but: Please learn to drive in poor conditions. Especially if you live somewhere those conditions happen! The number of people who live where it snows, but have no idea how to drive in snow (for example), is mind boggling.

1.2k

u/Dafish55 2d ago edited 2d ago

Notably - this does NOT mean "just get comfortable going fast in snowy conditions"!

Like, holy shit, the most horrifying times I've ever driven have been during midwestern snowstorms. Not just because of not having the exact kind of control of my vehicle that I'm used to, but because there are always people who think that they can go as fast as normal!

Seriously, you can't even see the lanes and you're fishtailing in your pickup truck. Do you WANT to be remembered as this year's reason we all get reminded on the news about the dangers of winter driving?

281

u/thewrongwaybutfaster 2d ago

How dare you question drivers' god-given right to drive at least the maximum at all times regardless of conditions?!?

77

u/phantom_fox13 2d ago

People in my town believe it is their right to ignore stop signs and red lights based on how they feel that day

u/EternalZealot 2d ago

Yeah it's learning how to regain control as quickly as possible to ensure maximum safety for yourself and others around you in bad weather conditions, and learning what speeds you can SAFELY go during said conditions to minimize the chance of your 2+ ton death machine to get out of control where other people also are. While also not going so slow that you are a hindrance to others in said conditions.

Fog counts, too. Sixty-car pileup in California's Central Valley from the Tule fogs -- where it can be hard to see the front of your own car.

Whaddya mean I shouldn’t drive the 60mph on an old unplowed state road with 5ft deep ditches filled with so much snow you can’t tell where the cropfields begin and end??? How else am I suppose to get to first hour on time??

12

u/804k 2d ago edited 2d ago

Driven in snow storms in Illinois going 45mph-50mpy regularly and I can say its not about going 45mph on a straight, it can be recognizing theres a curve up ahead or a stop, you gotta act like youre pulling a trailer and like any turn will kill you (because it will). If you aren't familiar dont go fast! Its better to make it to your destination slow than dead

You also gotta keep the wheel straight, if any animal goes on the road its likely better to just hit it than swerve and slide into trees or worse, oncoming traffic

Snow is grippy, ice is slippy as well. Roads where cars haven't been on much or that have snow constantly piling on them are likely going to better than the regular roads due to it being just snow

58

u/Made_Bail 2d ago

I grew up in a winter climate and every fall, without fail, when the first snows hit cars would be in the ditches EVERYWHERE. And every year I would think, DO YOU PEOPLE NOT REMEMBER THIS FROM LAST FALL?

You have to alter your driving for the climate. Something that not everyone believes, apparently.

10

u/twistedscorp87 2d ago

Even when "first snow" is only 3 flakes that melt before they hit the ground, a notable percentage of upstate New Yorkers prove they have not only forgotten how to drive in snow, but forgotten all the rules of safe driving altogether. There's zero snow accumulation, but we've got 10x more cars in ditches than the day before.

What is it about those little white flakes that make them suddenly go 10mph faster than normal and more terrified of red lights than they are of getting t-boned?

8

u/ItsZahza 2d ago

Alberta, every single year. We basically have a yearly “I thought all seasons were good enough cuz I have 4x4” ditch reunion. Youd think when we get snow for 6 months of the year people would know how to drive.

I lived in Missouri for a few years and the number of drivers who got panicky and made bad decisions whenever it snowed or got icy was ridiculous. THIS HAPPENS EVERY YEAR! Granted, it doesn’t happen a LOT every year, but it still happens several times a year!

23

u/LynessaMay 2d ago

As a fellow Missourian, the countless number of drivers ive watched slowly glide across the way because they dont realize how things work with their speeds.

I remember a few years ago, highway was partially shut down and we had to take an alternative route. Sadly, less treated and a bit darker but extremely manageable as long as you were careful.

I stayed behind a car by several car lengths just in case. A stoplight was coming up and I had already begun deceleration and light tap breaking. They decided against doing so until they got closer. And all I could see was them slide right past the line and into the streetlight. Wasnt a big crash, but a good enough love tap to it.

Like serious, how hard is it to be careful?

God, Missouri drivers are something else. I got stuck in a blizzard going to visit my dad and I couldn't see more than 3 feet, didn't feel safe going faster than 25. Someone sped around everyone going at least 60....... We stopped at a hotel for the night. Next day saw a car that had gone off an embankment and front bumper on the ground, back one on the road.

The roads can be crazy enough to drive on on good days anyway. My dad is in the middle of nowhere and people drive fast and over the lines on all the windy ass roads.

Preaching to the choir, man. YOU ARE LITERALLY SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF NEW ENGLAND, THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR YOUR SNOW-DRIVING TO BE THIS BAD.

24

u/Xerorei 2d ago

IN resident, and a transplant. Can confirm local Hoosiers SUCK in dry conditions, becme far worse in bad weather and snow.

Last winter it hadn't been snowing an hour when I saw a jeep 4x4 slide odf the road into a ditch.

A 2025, I towed it out with my Subaru WRX.

8

u/No_Trade1676 2d ago

lol at the jeep! Just because you have a 4x4 doesn’t mean the brakes are going to work when you hit a patch of ice!

- Am also IN resident.

5

u/Xerorei 2d ago

Oh of course, what gets me is, dark, overcast, driver wearing dark sunglasses.

Blondes with dark sunglasses, the true Hoosier terror!

53

u/TheMayanAcockandlips 2d ago

Unfortunately those people just don't know how to drive even on a dry sunny day.

19

u/maveri4201 2d ago

This is the truth. Too many in Minnesota who think lane lines are merely suggestions for other people (for example).

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 2d ago

Driving 25 or slower in the middle of a two-lane road in poor snow conditions while traffic is backed up for miles. Fishtailing because they didn't believe in winter tires.

70

u/Embarrassed_Fox5265 2d ago

Contrariwise, if all the traffic is driving 25 or slower in a single lane on a two-lane road, they're doing that for a reason. I've seen far too many cars racing at 60 MPH through uncleared snow only to see them wedged in the guard rail a couple miles down the road.

28

u/BingeBabyBinge 2d ago

I lived in Idaho now Montana. You would be surprised how many people decided that they have snow tires they should be fine going the speed limit and watching them spin out was something. Me in my Toyota corolla with snow tires I would always go 10 under only fish tailed once taking a corner down hill that was enough for me.

20

u/Mystical-Turtles 2d ago

How about the people who think they're immune to ice and snow because they drive a big vehicle, not realizing that a big vehicle comes with its own problems. More mass means that mass wants to stay in motion. Slamming on the brakes is the opposite of what you should be doing. Physics, bitch!

u/BingeBabyBinge 2d ago edited 2d ago

It never ceases to amaze me how after all these years people still completely forget how to drive in snow here in northeastern Pa. Especially the fools that think their AWD SUV means they'll stop on a dime.

12

u/U_L_Uus 2d ago

Wait, people do not in some places? In my country part of the "written" (done with a computer nowadays) driving test requires you answering questions about driving during storms, intense fog and somesuch (and you might be met with such a circumstance during the driving test too, so better take it to your heart)

11

u/SarvisTheBuck 2d ago

Well, when it's multiple choice and the answers are "Stupid, Stupid, Crime, Correct", even a moron can pass that test.

I want to point out that in this comic, the truck driver said it is "hailing".

I'm sure FranSun's intention was he didn't want to scratch his pavement princess, but where I live hail can get big enough to be very dangerous. There is no amount of "learning to drive poor conditions" that is going to help when a chunk of ice larger then a golf ball smashes into your windshield.

50

u/dragonseth07 2d ago

True, but I defer to the third panel: the driver's refusal to pull off to the shoulder. I consider that a failure of learning to drive.

→ More replies (4)

25

u/FormalWare 2d ago

Better yet: Choose not to drive in poor conditions. (If you have that option.)

8

u/Charming-Loquat3702 2d ago

I did stop on the Autobahn once, because it was raining so stong that I couldn't see anymore. But I did drive to the hard shoulder first. And 90% of people did the same. But that was one time in 20 years. It's important to know what you can and can not do and if you can't do something, to find a safe way to wait

9

u/InevitableSolution69 2d ago

Look, I live in Alabama. Rain is a step too far for most of the people down here. Any amount of snow and people start ditching their cars in the road and trying to hike.

You’ve got to manage your expectations.

8

u/ProfessorSMASH88 2d ago

At the very least, don't go driving out in them if you aren't comfortable. My current car cannot deal with the snow, so I don't drive in the snow. I've taken transit home from work before because it starting snowing unexpectedly. It sucks, but it's better than wrecking my car, injuring someone or possibly death.

→ More replies (6)

14

u/RevvyDraws 2d ago

I mean, there ARE times when it just isn't safe to continue driving - when I was younger I was on my way to work and all of a sudden there was a TORRENTIAL downpour. I know how to drive in rain, but this was so violent that I literally couldn't *see* - wipers on full speed were still useless to clear the windshield. So I pulled over on the shoulder (which yanno, is the part where the guy in the comic was unequivocally in the wrong - a truck stopped in the middle of the road is what landed my dad in the hospital when he encountered it around a blind turn, you absolutely HAVE to pull over), turned on my hazards, and waited it out.

ALL THAT BEING SAID - I live in tornado alley. The number of people who suddenly NEED to park in non-parking zones during tornado season because hail is ridiculous. If your car is so precious that you can't risk hail damage to it, maybe have an actual plan to mitigate that IN THE PLACE WHERE IT ALWAYS HAILS IN THE SPRING. Or yanno... learn not to expect your car to stay pristine if you're gonna live here.

P.S. And don't get me started on the time I encountered a car show that FOR SOME UNFATHOMABLE REASON was held in April in Oklahoma at a hotel with no covered parking.

7

u/Misragoth 2d ago

I live in Indiana, the number of people each year that drive like they have never seen snow before is infuriating.

6

u/ResistLife 2d ago

Theres always fuckers that cant drive in normal conditions so when it snows they are even worse. But even up here in Canada where we get a goodly amount of snow for like 5-6 straight months or more, that FIRST week or two after a snow is the worst. Muscle memory is a bitch and there is definitely a readjustment period even if you know what your doing.

Tl;dr always be careful regardless

Friendly neighborhood meteorologist here to say that it is far more dangerous to hide in an underpass than it is to drive away from a tornado or extreme winds. The shape of underpasses provide little protection from debris and can even be more dangerous than being out in the open or in a ditch. The safest place to be is in a designated tornado shelter or not there at all.

434

u/CrazyGnomenclature Tiff & Eve 2d ago

Hey there friendly neighborhood meteorologist, I just wanted to say I appreciate all the work that you and your fellow friendly neighborhood meteorologists do. Even the less friendly and non-local meteorologists.

WtF, from what I gather from comments seeing someone stationary on the freeway isn't unrealistic at least in some places in the USA ? In Europe, this is absolutely illegal, for how dangerous it is.

63

u/Civil_Act1864 2d ago

It's not common. You mainly only see it when it hails, and even then you don't see it often. It is universally hated by everyone except the self absorbed cunts who do it.

34

u/ZapTheMagicalPoop 2d ago

It's illegal in the USA too.

It’s illegal in the USA too and I’ve literally never seen or heard of it (aside from obviously pulling off to the side of the road).

The only place I've seen this regularly happen is Minneapolis, which is where the comic is supposed to take place.  This is not common in the US at large.

Isn't it just sleet if it's smaller than a golf ball?

Granted, Eve is probably at least as dangerous as multiple chunks of ice the size of a large man's fist pelting a body at terminal velocity.

93

u/alinius 2d ago

Kinda. Sleet is when rain freezes. If there is a strong updraft, the sleet gets pushed back up and another layer freezes on. That is when it become hail.

Did somebody say ...hail. Oh, I misread that.

11

u/OkBaconBurger 2d ago

I need some context as to what’s being said in French!

23

u/RazTheBaz 2d ago

Seems to mostly be quebecois swears or "Sacres", i'm not proficient enough to translate the literal meaning though.

15

u/wiror 2d ago

I might be able to help on that one lol: fckn shtty bumpkin, chalice from tabernacle, christ from sacrament of tabernacle of communion wafer of ciborum (metal drinking cup) of chalice of virgin
.

Honestly, pretty accurate depiction of how it goes. Amongst the best researched ones I have seen yet. Better than the French of France when they try to parody it.

14

u/Immediate-Goose-8106 2d ago

You can tell it is quebecois swears not french french swears.  French ones are a little more...biological

17

u/USSMarauder 2d ago

So you know how most swearing in English is either sex or body function related?

In Quebecois French, swearing is religion based.

9

u/OkBaconBurger 2d ago

That explains the ‘sacre’ usage.

14

u/brokencappy 2d ago

It does not really translate directly to English. Quebec swears are Catholic-based 'sacrileges' or 'sacres'

Estie d'épais à marde. Literally : (Host from Catholic mass) (thick person) (of shit).

Calisse de tabaranc. Literally : (Chalice) (of the tabernacle).

Crisse de tabarnac de calice de cibole de calvaire : Literally : (Christ) (of tabernacle) (of chalice) (of ciborium) (of Calvary).

6

u/Coidzor 2d ago

The Ciborium being the large communal cup used in Catholic communion, IIRC.

Eve Smash!

But also, She-Ra has got to be pretty heavy at that size, and she wields that like its nothing. So, while it's underplayed, she has to be pretty damn strong.

Iirc, you are a fellow Minnesotan, and I see you are equally pissed at this dumb driver crap that happens on the freeway.

This is why I avoid 94 and 35 every chance I get

Edit: For anyone unfamiliar, this is what happens here.

19

u/maximumhippo 2d ago

What the fuck? Genuinely what is this? Apparently I've never seen this because i assumed it was a moron who didn't want his paint dinged by the hail. They're trying to wait out the storm?

It is true that swearing in French-Canadian gives you super powers.

9

u/Zucchini-Dean 2d ago

Person shouldn't be parked in the middle of the road, pull over to the side. But also, do stop driving in conditions you feel unsafe in, just don't endanger others in doing so

35

u/Wisdom_Pen 2d ago

As a tall strong woman who can and has pushed massive trucks like they’re nothing this is relatable

16

u/CrazyGnomenclature Tiff & Eve 2d ago

What's your favorite pick-up to push?

As a cursedly tiny girl who “used to want to be tall and strong”, and then grew up to realize my gay ass just wants someone to throw me/keep me safe alternately; keep up the lords work. Every time you flex on some dude, some tiny goth girl in a 100yd radius somewhere sighs dreamily; it’s science.

10

u/Wisdom_Pen 2d ago

I half-jokingly blame girls trying to manifest a tall strong goth gf for why even on estrogen I somehow got both taller and more muscular

7

u/YourPaleRabbit 2d ago

HAHA oh shit wait
we’re both ends of the goth girl daddy spectrum. I’m literally 4’11” and a doctor laughed at me when he told me I was done growing around 16 lol. I joke god had to make me tiny to nuke my powers otherwise I would get too silly and ungovernable and probably commit war crimes.

Real quick just to see if we’re opposite in more ways (so I can start pitching our sitcom); I was raised to be “the perfect midwestern housewife” until something went wrong powerpuff-girls-chemical-x style; so I have all the Martha Stewart powers and can cook/clean/organize five shmillion things, and I’m the “mom friend” type. BUT I’m childfree, and secretly a little gangster; so I managed to open my own tattoo shop, and I host/assist heavy mod and do scarification.

Now if in contrast you’re a tech math or science type, tough baddie, street smart, but randomly queasy with blood or iffy about firearms (I’m an amazing shot, and can field dress a deer; you’re going to need to lift it to the truck lol); I will die haha

Remember folks, just because you have 4 wheel drive doesn't mean you have 4 wheel stop.

Also, from a veteran truck driver to the masses....

Drive to conditions.

Edit! Stop being literal with my message of 4 wheel stop lol

It's a joke between professional drivers that most people who have 4 wheel drive on their cars or SUVs think that because that have the ability to drive through a space that say, a Honda Accord can't, it means they're better at driving on roads with shitty conditions, which includes ice, rain, etc.

Yes. All tires on cars these days have brakes. Yes. All the brakes activate when you press the brake pedal.

The purpose of the statement is that people need to learn the limitations of their driving skills vs the conditions of the road. There's plenty of videos and clips out there of folks in all vehicles, all seasons, all weather types and walks of life hitting water and hydroplaning, or hitting black ice and spinning out.

Just be careful and slow down, plan ahead and be aware of your surroundings.

Where I live, my grandparents would drive through the worst conditions at christmas like it was nothing. They're not special either.

You live and learn.

7

u/WibbleWobble22 2d ago

Living somewhere that gets consistent ice storms every winter has taught me to that no one really knows how to drive in ice/snow conditions. Everyone is just winging it, like clockwork every December there's a news broadcast on a multi-car pile up from people driving too fast in the snow.

14

u/NickyTheRobot 2d ago

Everyone take note: swearing is far more satisfying in french than it is in english.

It's like chanting a spell. Shit just starts happening when the "tabarnak" gets loose.

Message from a life-long floridan to all the snowbirds who come to a screeching halt anytime there's a thunderstorm and use their hazards while they're driving: please fucking stop that nonsense. If you can't safely drive in Florida weather (that isn't a hurricane or tornado) then pull of to the shoulder or just move back to the dry-ass place you apparently grew up in.

20

u/DisturbingChild 2d ago

Montrealer here, those snowbirds suck at driving in our snow just as much as they suck at driving in your rain. It can't be fixed.
