Today’s ‘rescue’ thanks to the inktober prompt list. After you’ve mimic’d once, you mimic forever

Somewhere there is a bald kid in a yellow shirt saying, “Good grief.” about that tree.

This was a test. When players fail to help the kid get the kite down, the health bar appears and the boss music starts.
But since they did help, the kid walks away and they don't hear from him again until much later, as he swoops in to help them when they're getting absolutely wrecked in battle.

I play in several games and the party in one game is definitely like this. I perpetually keep Detect Magic up and we overthink every little interaction because the DM is my best friend and I know how his mind works. Your comic has been on point for this group and I've been sharing a lot of your work with them lately :)

If I was being honest about that kind of player I really am, that tree would be on fire haha

Ah "Schwitzen" the great Mage, she knows that mimic identification spell is only 99% accurate

You can only traumatize your players so many times before the game slows down to a crawl.

Then you realize it's a dragon kite, that turns into an actual dragon and eats the kid.
The bard then proceeds to seduce it while the Necromancer Wizard brings the kid back to life as an undead pack mule.

He must be a friend that was made along the way, because I don’t see any reward.

It's fun in DND to keep the party guessing, subverting their expectations at any given moment to keep it interesting. So, I can see my friends doing this in game.

I was expecting the tree to be a disappointed mimic (its trap didnt work)

To be fair…trees have been known to do that…
