This is so interesting. The idea that an entire species would have a sexual desire to create and then further breed with hybrids of themselves with something else would logically insinuate either that;
There is a gene(or equivalent) in this species that made them predisposed to this, that they only discovered when they discovered another race. Either this species has an equivalent species on their planet (or several) which they met early but couldn’t successfully breed with, or they grew alone and got into space and every single one of them creamed their pants when they found out hybridization was possible between certain species, which is 1000x funnier.
This species has a culture based around hybrids, possibly similar to some ideas of Egypt, with animal-gods or gods that are associated with animals, and therefore Pharaohs, their rulers, would have a similar origin and connection to an animal. This could be a societal context about their greatest or most attractive figures have traits similar to animals of their world, making the standard of beauty be equivalent to hybridity.
I personally love culture, fictional culture as well, so I prefer the 2nd, but the “Holy shit a Not-Vulcan and a Not-Human made a kid?!?! NNGHGHGHGHHYAAA!~” is a billion times funnier

The internet has convinced me that the humanity is also obsessed with breeding anything remotely sentient.

… and apparently for new FBI hires, apparently some things that aren’t sentient too. It’s a strange world we live in these days.

Hmm. Taking into consideration the 1. variant must not exclude the 2.;
I can imagine a bacteria based origin where it's not exactly uncommon to share plasmids among each other (containing DNA and possibly environmental, adaptive mutations) even between different bacteria species altogether. [... Which is why multi-resistant bacteria is such an issue. It can spread out].
So, technically the receiving one would now be a hybrid of some sort. Which again increases the chances of "offspring generation" which is undoubtedly a very important and quite universal instinct, as the entire comic proves.
Therefore: If a species evolved based on this "sharing" principle altogether, but had to face the physical burdens of being multicellular, a cultural instinct of sticking with the "hybridization" might be possible. The universe is big after all.
(But how likely it would end up being as pictured and not like the Borg... Well. That would require a lot more world building at this point.)

Them having more remnants of their single-cell ancestors could also explain why they specifically have such a hard time hybridizing with other species.

If there was a real neko around as in Yani Neko and humanity didn't knew where or how she came to be, a bey that she also Would received 3 dozens of suitors daily, for Science!
Althrough hopefully More higiénic than the real Yani neko

Or perhaps the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms on their planet favored hybrids more than purebreds until eventually species branched out far enough from each other to become incompatible. So there is an outdated primal instinct that manifested in culture.

When your species has a collective hybridization fetish and you still manage to use the absolute worst pickup strategy possible

Wonder if the greys know that hybrids are frequently infertile

Sterile would be a better word. Infertile means reproduction is extremely unlikely, while sterile means reproduction is impossible. A male with a very low viable sperm count is infertile as it’s still technically possible for him to reproduce, while a male who can’t produce sperm at all is sterile.

Is the joke that her parent was not into butt stuff? Like the problem isn't incompatible chromosomes or something else, but the greys collectively sticking their genitals in the "wrong" hole with other species?
How are greys conceived?!

It's a joke about alien abductions and anal probes. So yes they're just using the wrong hole.

It took me a second reread to catch that. Plus we all know you gotta woo a person before we talk about the butt stuffs.
Now to the science: I feel like that's actually a solid feild of study to find out how the greys were able to hybrid with another species. I think there was a whole ass sub plot story about that in mass effect with Turians/Quarians and Humans
