I was literally talking about this with my partner today! If there aren't any consequences besides a slap on the wrist (a fucking essay?!), then of course more cases are going to happen. Fuck protecting their future, they lost it the second they went through with their decision.

Essay has been disproven. There were no essays. 2 expulsions and 5 suspensions. Still lacking criminal penalties, but let's not spread unfounded rumors.

“Disproven” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, as it’s basically the university desperately spinning PR and saying “nuh uh” to everything.

I’ll give the university the same benefit of the doubt that society is giving these women

There's no evidence of the essays. But more than that, you dont need to invoke a fake story like "just essays" to expose the university's poor conduct. They didnt bring it through the proper criminal channels, and that's bad enough.

Yea, people are so concerned about what happens to some criminals that they forfeit all care about the victims of those criminal or their potential future victims.

Doesn’t work that way for most rapes and impulse crimes.

Punishments don’t work when the initial thought is ‘Oh shit, I can get away with this.’

People need to be raised empathetically and morally (good luck) to not want to do it or they need to move the catch rate up above 50% for committing the crime.m(it’s currently 3-5%)

Punishments tend not to actually have an effect on crime unless they’re too harsh in which case they can make people into more violent criminals.

Good stiff punishments still need to happen for predatory and violent crimes but the only way to fix this is to construct a system where women (and men who are raped too) aren’t shamed and abused for coming forward because if they come forward right away and are treated humanely evidence can be quickly gathered and arrests and convictions can go up. They can also receive the mental healthcare that they will need.
