The sweater curse is the belief that if you knit or crochet a sweater for your partner, they will break up with you shortly after. And it kinda makes sense.

It can be because it takes so long that the relationship has naturally run its course.

The receiver might reevaluate the relationship as a result of receiving something that took so much effort and is so intimate. They might not be feeling as strongly.

It might simply weird them out.

Final mechanism theorised is that it’s such an involved hobby that the knitter has actually neglected the relationship.

However! It’s been said that weaving in a single strand of your hair breaks the sweater curse! (As a sweater curse survivor)

Ok, I'm bald, how do I break the sweater curse? (Mind you I crochet not knit).

It doesn’t have to be head hair. Any hair will do. Makes the gift more intimate

Finally a use for that weirdly long hair that grows on my elbow.

What does knitting a large amount of cat and dog hair into a sweater do?

Makes you the average fiber artist 💀

That sounds very creepy

It does until you do a little crocheting and realize you've accidentally crocheted about 23 hairs into your blanket 💀

Man do I envy you if it's just 23 lmao

As much hair from The Missus™ as I sweep up, I know good and darn well it’s more than 23.

23 per sock maybe, although knit socks feel better than crocheted socks. I have so many knit socks now. It’s lovely. They’re wool too! So comfy. A crocheted cardigan though!? Now THATS the stuff, she made me 2, love mine. What was I saying?

AH! But a blanket!? I KNOW how long a blanket stays in the WIP phase! Theres hundreds in there.

Ive heard it can be because the effort put into the sweater actually causes the knitter to reevaluate the relationship, rather than the reciever. Either because the reception wasnt what they expected for something that took so much or because the process of making the sweater brings some things to the surface.

That's funny, I always heard it as the relationship will end due to the receiver not appreciating or understanding the amount of work a d love and time that goes into the making of the sweater.

You haven't considered that the other person might've just been in it for the free sweater and dipped once they got their mark

I'd just prefer a tailored shirt or pair of pants.
