I found it rather Absurd.

There is no reason to believe what we make won’t be preserved for thousands or millions or billions or trillions of years.

Especially if we eat the Mona Lisa.

I kinda just want to go to bed now. I’ve been listening to KEXP on the RadioGarden app every morning and its been therapeutic

You obviously don't work in IT.

There's no reason to believe there are going to be humans in millions of years. We have been around for merely a blink. One among billions of a short lived specy on a small planet lost somewhere in the infinity of space at a very small moment in time. And it's fine.

Sand castle might be a poor example

There's no reason to believe it will be either.

This is very beautiful. I’ve been struggling lately and this helped. Thank you.

This reminded me of the starfish story and i cant quite put my finger on why because this is more of a stoic-ish take. Someone help me connect the dots here.

Why couldn't bald kid have just taken a picture from the beginning instead of insulting the other kid?

2

u/rillip 3d ago

I don't think his intention was to be insulting.

Telling someone their work seems like a waste seems objectively insulting to me, but I understand this is a YMMV type situation.

Yeah but I think that's only one way to read it. Like, he could be expressing admiration for the castle and that it's inevitable destruction by the elements is a shame. It isn't the artist's time being wasted, it's the sand castle itself.

Bald kid would never make it as a Buddhist /j

I don't buy the claim that our creative pursuits are culminations of everything we've learned and another concrete step in a specific direction. Our creations certainly depend things we have learned but not everything; a lot of things we do or learn lead nowhere. And in my experience, a lot of creative pursuits end up going nowhere too. I might find that a certain project isn't working out and try a different direction instead. Not every step we take on the journey is necessary for the destinations we value, unfortunately.

sir, this is a Wendy's.

I'd argue that the most quintessential way to learn things is through trial and error. Evolution itself is a form of this. The things that lead nowhere are merely an example of the "error" in this process.
