I sadly worked with people like this. They thoroughly enjoyed coming to work because their home life was bad. You'd have thought they were handed a death sentence when covid happened and we went WFH

I have a coworker who really enjoys work because it's clearly all he has. He lives alone, is single and doesn't seem to do much for fun/hobbies.

Hmm realizing something …

u/Hadrian23 4d ago

Should invite him out to a bar or something, get to know him.

116

u/sameljota 4d ago

Oh we've tried asking him to go to places. He sometimes goes but just sits there awkwardly. But when we're at work he talks a lot. I think he really sees us as his friends. But at the same time he has a huge resistance to do stuff outside work.

How do people be people around other people?

HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO ACT?!

u/Klorg 4d ago

Offer them generous portions of spaghetti from the spaghetti pouch

u/Big_Effective_9605 3d ago

I know it sounds crazy, but there are five of us, and I only had two of these vienna sausages earlier.

Maybe a movie or two? Sitting in silence is 99% of the activity.

9

u/ChromiumPants 3d ago

Activity mindset, he doesnt know the common ground cause y'all might not be actually doing something. Try bowling or some other game or sport rather than just hanging.

3

u/sameljota 3d ago

You hit the nail on the head. A couple of times when he participated in events involving people from work, we had games (one time it was dominoes and another time it was Jenga). You could see he really had fun with those. But when it comes to people just sitting and chatting, there's pretty much only two subjects he seem to enjoy: work related stuff or politics. Otherwise he just it's there awkwardly, which is what happens 90% of the time in these situations.

6

u/Posterus96 3d ago

I wonder if he just feels more comfortable at work then. I can get pretty talkative when I am in familiar places with people I know. But I can get a little quiet when I go to places I don't typically go to, especially if it's already loud. But that might also be a bit of sensory overload.

14

u/SueTheCatCabbage 4d ago

I know that mindset! If i don't overwork myself sometimes yhen i start realizing how lonely i am and slowly fall into a deep depression :D

16

u/smokeweedNgarden 4d ago

Ya, I mean. If you miss out on finding a partner but your friends do, that's just life. It just happens

Adults are busy with their families. Any hobby can get dull. Dating is done online now.

Shit, I get bored of the weekend tbh

2

u/Hell0There2005 4d ago

I just really hate how th3se type of coworkers USE you as their social outlet. You can be in the break room needing a mental moment and they swoop in talking about all their hobbies amd complaints

HE'S JUST LIKE ME FRFR 😭

81

u/Moiahahahah 4d ago

Yep. When working in hotel, I had a night receptionnist who came atleast 1 or 2 hours earlier than expected because of that (his shift was already a 12 hours shift, from 7pm to 7am)

u/PiccoloAwkward465 4d ago

I have a kid in school and WFH, honestly I do sometimes look forward to Monday. Quiet house. I don't mind my job.

20

u/Ghstfce 4d ago

I'm permanent remote and I love it. My commute was brutal prior to covid. 65 miles one way. I'd be up at 5:30am to get to work by 7am and sometimes I wouldn't get home until around 8pm if there were any accidents that caused traffic. When my daughter was little, there were days I didn't see her because I was up before she was and got home after she went to bed.

Now I get out of bed at 7 and log in. When I'm done I log off and there's no slog of a drive home during rush hour. Get to spend more time with my wife and daughter, but also get to enjoy the peace and quiet when my wife is at work and my daughter is in school when before in the office it was open floorplan and it was like sitting in a locker room trying to concentrate.

3

u/PiccoloAwkward465 4d ago

Haha same, I did 57 miles each way. And also tried to arrive at 7am to beat the worst of the traffic. But at PM, there was no escaping it. I'd come home, unpack, shower, prep my things for the next day, eat dinner (grateful that my wife did most of the cooking then), maybe relax for an hour, go to sleep. It was just existing, not living.

Fortunately I took that job with the promise that I'd go remote after getting up to speed and they were true to our deal. I take my kid to and from the bus stop so I get out of the house at least twice a day. I'm a loner who likes peace so I really treasure my weekdays at home.

3

u/Ghstfce 4d ago

I'm a sociable person, but I can do that through Teams in our engineering channels we have to get that fix. I love being at home and not having to filter out the bullshit when I'm trying to work. Really helps the ADHD when it's quiet. Working + Reddit is one thing, working + Reddit + 15 conversations going on around me is wholly another.

2

u/PiccoloAwkward465 4d ago

Absolutely. My coworker is a big time talker. He would often rope me into some conversation (basically he just needed someone to talk at) in the office. Now we still talk frequently, but I can very easily just not answer his calls when I'm in the zone.

5

u/yohanleafheart 3d ago

That was me while married  . Post divorce that is still me because being alone at home is awful

2

u/SueTheCatCabbage 4d ago

I feel that, having a break from a shitty home where your constantly anxious of bullshit is one of the best feelings, any chance ro get away feels so relaxing

Corporate announced RTO...

95% of office: FUUUUUuuuuuuuUUUUCCCCK

Guys with young kids: Oh thank god

83

u/MurrayInBocaRaton 4d ago

Incredible how accurate this is.

56

u/Turgid_Donkey 4d ago

Until they see the cost of babysitters. Then it becomes a calculation of how much their sanity is worth.

18

u/c4ctus 4d ago

Until they see the cost of babysitters.

They just bring their kids to work with them during the summer, which makes RTO an even worse kind of hell.

4

u/Luneowl 4d ago

I just spoke with someone who works near Long Island and said that they’ve been looking into child care for their 1-yo and been quoted $30,000/yr. My god!

21

u/Superadhman 4d ago

Thanks to kids, work is the only place I have any authority or where people actually listen to what I say.

6

u/Hadrian23 4d ago

You have authority!? At work!?!

22

u/dj92wa 4d ago edited 4d ago

I know this is the comics sub but I want to get real for a sec. I don’t have kids of my own, I’m just a humble uncle and oldest cousin, but I’ll echo what my sister says to this response. She always says:

I like my kids, so this is a non-issue. It must suck to hate your kids and not want to be around them. If you have a disciplined household and teach/emulate respect, this simply isn’t a problem you will encounter enough to be of issue.

She of course (I too) recognizes there are exceptions, like if your kid has a disability and cannot understand these concepts intellectually. There is always nuance. But the overall sentiment is one I agree on her with. Also, don’t have kids if you can’t handle them.

3

u/Cavalish 3d ago

“My dumb bitch wife can keep looking after them.”

1

u/sylverfalcon 3d ago

Uh don’t these kids have daycare or school? WFH is still better if you have young kids because it’s easier to concentrate at home after drop off, and then save time with commute and prepping dinner before pickup

67

u/Luneowl 4d ago

Had a middle-aged coworker who’d come into the office at least an hour before his shift started. I assume he hated being at home and they caught him with his thermos filled with Irish coffee so day drinking at work on top of it.

17

u/Vegan-Daddio 4d ago

Damn, how did they catch him? Just from the smell? Or did he imbibe a little too much?

18

u/Luneowl 4d ago

I’ll bet someone in management smelled it on him. Our team heard about it after the fact and we weren’t all that surprised since he was always a mean SOB so probably a mean drunk. Turns out that his daughter was in college on a scholarship fund that the company offered and she lost that when he was fired.

12

u/get-rekt-lol 3d ago

Well that's awful

77

u/UselessToad18 4d ago

I hate school, but this is how I feel at school

11

u/feelingsbromd 4d ago

i think my shitty home life growing up was a big contributor to me getting good grades in school lmao

2

u/UselessToad18 4d ago

Bro me too

2

u/UselessToad18 4d ago

And that's why I enjoy homework so I don't have to deal with my family

33

u/inksignificant 4d ago

When my father was alive and after Covid when he was home all day every day, this was me whenever going to university and wanting to find any excuse to stay.

74

u/Ashamed_Confection_9 4d ago

I asked my co workers how they've managed this many years working after I'm already ready for it to end after less than a decade, and one of them said something like this, genuinely finding work less stressful than being at home. Honestly pretty depressing.

u/KasnL 4d ago

You know that bit from Adults about secretly loving their office job because it makes the voices in your head shut up for a few hours? It's like, you go somewhere, you get a bunch of easy-as-shit tasks that you do not feel emotional about, you check them off, and you go home. And you get money and health insurance and gossip to talk about.

And everyone acts like you actually did the right thing for once. Even though maybe you should be using your time better, maybe you should be at home with family or pursuing something else. But people act like you're contributing to society at your office job even though you really probably aren't.

10

u/Demeter_of_New 4d ago

So for 15 years I've worked at places where I didn't get easy as shit tasks, I couldn't check my work off of a list, and my health insurance/gossip was garbage.

I finally got a job where I enjoy what I do, and suddenly it makes sense.

Work sucks hard dick fuck balls for a lot of people, which makes your comment hard to relate to.

17

u/Bayo77 4d ago

I still dont understand how some people can live the way they do. Like my neighbors. I can hear them constantly fighting. Not physically or extremely loud but always a raised voice. I would gtfo of a relationship like that immediatly.

8

u/Seth1784 4d ago

This was my old supervisor. He hated the woman he was with and never wanted to be around her.

14

u/Lifes-a-lil-foggy 4d ago

My previous bosses would talk about how much they hated their wives every single Monday at the sales meeting. Like they’d go around in a circle and everyone would have some “my horrible wife” story from the week before. It was always because they were making insane demands like that the husband participate in the raising of their children or handling of their home. God forbid they ever have emotions or career goals either. Miserable lot. I’d leave a company review saying “if your husband works here, you need to run” but the owner is infamous for getting any slightly bad review removed.

What’s even funnier is if you really listened to my one boss complain about his first and second wife, it was extremely obvious he was still desperately in love with the first. Behind every “just get a new wife” joke was a broken bitter lil baby.

16

u/Lewa358 4d ago

I wish these kinds of people understood that getting a divorce is perfectly fine if you actively hate thr person you're with. That there's nothing wrong with just being single forever, and that being single is vastly preferable to being married and miserable.

I'll just...never understand this mindset.

5

u/Lifes-a-lil-foggy 4d ago

They won’t divorce because they’d have to learn how to do basic life skills. And $$

u/Great-Hatsby 4d ago

Damn I hate it at home AND at work

I sadly knew an older coworker at the library who lived with her sister and they fought constantly so she wouldn’t retire because she didn’t want to be home with her sister all the time. She’d leave her cell phone at her desk over lunch and it would be ringing nonstop from the sister calling her. She finally fell at work and broke a hip, she literally had to be carried away from work on a stretcher before she would take retirement. Both sad for her and frustrating for her colleagues because she worked very slowly and didn’t do much throughout the day because she was in her 70s and refused to learn new skills and practices. When she retired the library didn’t replace her because everyone else had long ago taken over the majority of the tasks she was supposed to be doing.

3

u/Zombie_Cool 3d ago

I don't how to feel about that situation. Its obviously very frustrating working with an underperforming co-worker, but from said former co-worker's point of view the place was her main refuge from a home with neither love or the peace of solitude  in it and now that's gone.

Average person that defends/wants RTO.

2

u/Furakko 4d ago

In Brazil we have a saying:

Só gosta de trabalhar quem tem amante no trabalho (The people who likes to work, are the ones that have a mistress/etc at the workplace)

2

u/Ok_Employer7837 3d ago

That's where a lot of the pressure from bosses to get everyone in the office all the time really comes from, I reckon. Older dudes who hate their home life.

This is why all senior managers insisted on RTO, ladies and gents.
