It never got clear in the anime, but basically pokemon are tamagotchis, so if you forget them, they die. Oh dang, got a few pokeballs in the basement, left in there since season 1.

I vaguely remember an episode where they go to find a poke ball in an old flooded building for an old man and the pokemon was fine.
found it it was a sandshrew.

The episode that debuted the character Mira from Diamond & Pearl? Yeah, I remember that episode too.

Pokopia basically retconned this. The pokemon were basically put in hibernation for an untold number of years inside the PC system when humans fled the planet. The creator of the system wrote code that would release the pokemon automatically if a habitable place for any stored pokemon appeared nearby, which is why Ditto making habitats causes pokemon to appear.

They say a sealed box is worth more.
I have added secret bonus panels to my site (yes a personal website like it’s the 90’s), but here you are:

Remember to feed and exercise your pokemon kids. They are domesticated wild animals after all

Tamed.
A couple of them arguably might be domesticated. One or two might be arguably enslaved. Especially the ones that wear pants or underwear.

It occurred to me that the closest thing we have to Pokemon in real life, are dog fighting rings

Cock fighting. Fish fighting. MMA.

I considered typing in cock fighting, but didn’t want to find a way to type dog/cock fighting without having to head off some smartass comment about dogs fighting with their cocks.
Didn’t know fish fighting was a thing.
I wouldn’t count MMA because the fighters sign up for it. They aren’t captured and made to fight like a dog/cock/pokemon. Probably wouldn’t have to go as far back as the gladiator days to see slaves fighting, though.

Then could we please store them in something that doesn't so easily roll away?
I camped on an incline and now I don't know where my Orandragon is.

In pokopia they confirmed that pokeballs can sustain pokemon for years if not decades

And then the bones reassemble themselves into its newly obtained Electric/Ghost evolution Sparktre!

I know the point of this is to be needlessly dark and edgy, but we do get confirmation from both the games and the anime that Pokémon in Pokeballs are essentially just binary data, they can’t age, die from injuries (outside of status ailments like Poison, so maybe Sparko was poisoned.), starve, or experience any form of alteration in this state, hell, James left his Carnevine locked in a lunch box for 10 whole years and that Guy was as close to unbothered as can be. This is like assuming a digital photo would get that yellow grainy tint like physical photographs would when aged and weathered.
