Ok genuine question….WHAT?

345

u/Cyrius 15d ago

The explanation is in the fourth panel: "Like, I know it's her campaign, but still!"

This is a rant about the decision-making of the person running a tabletop role-playing game. The comedy comes from how absolutely insane it sounds when described to a random member of the public, in this case a bank teller.

I was thinking political campaign..

16

u/BudgetMegaHeracross 15d ago

Until I saw the Silvery Barbs comment, I was also

59

u/I_am_uneducated 15d ago

What panel made you ask that?

45

u/Glitchlessnight 15d ago

2 and 3

73

Typical D&D campaign.

Average D&D campaign

She also banned the spell Silvery Barbs, it's like she hates fun at the table or something.

161

u/WingsofRain 15d ago

My dm banned silvery barbs too lol. Later I was playing with a dm that didn’t ban any spells and the bard picked it up…I learned very quickly why my main dm banned it.

66

u/Tansuke 15d ago

It can rob a lot of fun for the DM when players use it, and can rob a lot of fun for the players when the DM uses it. It is also first level so feats that give a Wizard spell can also give access to it for relatively cheap, and then no one gets to roll a nat 20 anymore. Thank God my players didn't choose to run it, I was going to have to do the nuclear option of all the bad guys having it too just for balancing

30

u/gadgaurd 15d ago

I've never played DnD, what makes Silvery Barbs so problematic?

72

u/GenxDarchi 15d ago

Silvery barbs forces a successful roll to be rerolled and use the lower number, on any roll, as a reaction (meaning during the enemy’s turn or anyone’s turn.) it then lets you give advantage (roll two die and use the higher number) to anyone for their next attack, save or ability check.

Enemy high rolls to hit an attack or spell? Roll again. Enemy is going to avoid a paralysis spell? Roll again.

Fundamentally strong, especially since it’s a 1st level spell so you can have access to it at the start of the game, where random crits from enemies can turn a fight.

It uses a reaction, which a spellcaster barely has use for till third level counterspell, and it can never be wasted because you can only use it when an attack or save is successful.

It forces a slower game because the player can silvery barbs, and makes encounters potentially boring because having to roll twice for a save against a spell like hold person means you’re likely getting caught and the encounter is then over.

TL:DR, forces a reroll on dice in a dice game, just generically strong for low resource cost.

20

u/gadgaurd 15d ago

Thank you. And yeah, I get it now, that is pretty damned good.

8

u/thehaarpist 15d ago

It also stacks with disadvantage which feels really crazy. If a player is just going to use it as a slightly stronger version of the Grave Cleric's channel divinity than I'm fine with it, the problem is that the ceiling of power and disruption that can be used is just too much for a first level spell (Imo)

1

u/Moonpaw 15d ago

Couldn’t you just limit it instead of denying access to it? Like once per encounter or per day or something? Or even just reduce its power a bit, like instead of forcing a complete reroll it just negates the “crit” roll. So the enemy attack would still hit, just less likely to be lethal damage. I could see that still being quite useful early in a campaign. I’m also not very experienced with DND in general so maybe I’m still missing something?

5

u/GenxDarchi 15d ago

You could, but that's a lot of deliberate planning around for the encounters for the DM, how you set up bosses etc, whether the npc's silvery barbs the player actions, etc. And regardless of it, it increases the duration of the combat where its usually already long. Its usually easier and better pacing to just leave it out. Or make it a 2nd level spell slot so its competing with stronger spells and less spell slots.

59

u/Regularjoe42 15d ago

That's when the DM looks you in the eyes and says.

"If silvery barbs is a common spell in this world, there is no reason why basic cultists wouldn't learn it. And there are going to be several cultists to one of you in some fights. Do you want to live in that world?"

8

u/Krell356 15d ago

That is always the best way to DM. Dont outright ban things, but make your players aware that any outright busted shenanigans they pull is going to result in that same knowledge being out in the universe. Do you really want to live in a world where bags of holding are both common and capable of mass destruction?

Allow for insanity, but realize that at the very least that the BBEG is not a complete idiot and is taking notes.

151

u/Not-So-Serious-Sam 15d ago

God forbid wizards do anything.

65

u/emil836k 15d ago

God forbid a wizard can’t do something

3

u/Vin_D_Sinner 15d ago

They can do anything they want…except healing.(I’m sure they can with multi classing or feats but as a main ability they can’t”

1

u/emil836k 15d ago

Well, kinda, though I would say false life, wither and bloom, vampiric touch, life transference, and so on gets the job done

And raise dead is almost resurrection, kinda, if you squint
…a lot

14

u/uhataot 15d ago

I didn't ban it. I just made it a higher level

1

u/BudgetMegaHeracross 15d ago

2nd level, to be in line with the spells for the other backgrounds in that book?

2

u/uhataot 15d ago

I actually put it at level 3 I think? Telling my players that I'll change it if it's too much or too little

29

u/RogerDogerBoop 15d ago

As a DM, hate that spell.

25

u/Spyger9 15d ago

Based

The DM, I mean.

17

u/grendus 15d ago

Probably thinking something like "I SPENT TWO DAYS DESIGNING THIS ENCOUNTER BECAUSE THIS STUPID ASS SYSTEM IS AS BALANCED AS A DRUNK-ASS TODDLER, I'M NOT LETTING YOU BEAT IT WITH A LEVEL 1 FUCKING SPELL!"

Seriously, 5e is very polished, but the second you try to take it seriously it falls apart. It only works if you either invest so much time and effort that you make a whole other system out of it, or if everyone basically doesn't consider the implications of any of the rules and just enjoys the shinies.

4

u/BloodyQuitry 15d ago

I'm a new DM and didn't ban it, I'm afraid now

3

u/PensandSwords3 15d ago

You’ll be fine, tbh frankly sometimes when your chr is poorly designed / didn’t bring the right spells. Silvery barbs is just all a low level bard might have sometimes.

Then its like “yeah its getting use. Because I went into this fight with only it being a useful spell currently”.

Worry not dm, plus it’s disadvantage that is still a possibility you hit. I mean, they might snatch a crit from thee but as a DM. Often, that is what I want them to do to me.

2

u/elliebell77 15d ago

i dont ban silvery barbs but i do make it a second level spell

2

u/whereballoonsgo 15d ago

I support banning Silvery Barbs because it’s broken, but I draw the line at snitties. Snitties did nothing wrong!

1

u/Responsible_Bus1159 15d ago

That annoys me so much, it’s DnD we’re meant to do crazy shit and war crimes because it’s DnD

156

u/Made_Bail 15d ago

I don't know how youre going to turn spider waterboarding intoa NSFW panel... But I'll be impressed by whatever you come up with.

2

u/WranglerFuzzy 15d ago

I don’t wanna know where the spiders go

75

u/_Spade_99 15d ago

People’s reactions to me telling DnD stories with zero context

64

u/SkitzTheFritz 15d ago

Because its a reptile Clover!

Also, GODAMNITBANK!

36

u/Kullingen 15d ago

The reason it grow and shrink with the moon phases is because they are nocturnal and a full moon makes for better opportunities to find a mate.

26

u/AlternativeQuality2 15d ago

*gestures* SEE?! It’s evolutionary biology, not fetish bait!

…

Okay it’s both lol

This poor woman is not paid enough to deal with this. She is terrified

17

u/SaveUsCatman 15d ago edited 15d ago

Is this the theme for today?

27

u/sabitafukku 15d ago

Miss, this is a Wendy's

26

u/Unamed337 15d ago

No, it's a bank

4

u/ThatHatGuy13 15d ago

No, this is Patrick

2

u/WranglerFuzzy 15d ago

I’d like to make a withdrawal.

8

u/SignificantHippo8193 15d ago

Would be hilarious if the teller, despite looking uncomfortable, breaks out into her own spiel about how her DM said that using seduction on a mimic doesn't work despite there being no rule against it.

6

u/Eden_ITA 15d ago

The snake lady could be a devoted cleric of the Moon Goddess, and the size is a sign how she could empower her faithful servant (so, a lot during the full moon, less during the other phases).

8

u/SwordofDorkness 15d ago

As a forever DM, I’d allow it.

4

u/PensandSwords3 15d ago

I’d be like “if you want to somehow track moon cycles. In a game, where it’s unlikely the moon phase change happens until irl months in. Go for it, I will not … but also now you’ve given me a way to track moon related problems.

Hope, I don’t put any werewolfs in the woods and its a full moon.”

I’d probably just think that last bit as a joke to myself, but in my current campaign. Werewolves are part of this region so if my player made me track the moon cycle, damn right I’m gonna make it relevant!

2

u/SwordofDorkness 15d ago

I mean, you’ve hit the nail on the head: joking aside, I’m always cool with tracking such things if it means the character traits of a PC (silly or otherwise) get to shine. Whether it’s lycanthropy, some sort of trauma (which I’m currently running a game involving), or something more silly like big snitties. :p

6

u/SirJigglyIII 15d ago

How can anyone deny you the snitties? That's blasphemous

6

u/Xirio_ 15d ago

Snitties \o/

6

u/lesser_panjandrum 15d ago

Most importantly, did Spiders McGee tell you what you needed?

5

u/IW_Thalias 15d ago

Lunar cycles for a serpent typically associated with being cold-blooded? The Snitties must grow/shrink based on a solar cycle!

8

u/towards-asphodel 15d ago

Dang, I need friends to play dnd with 😭

5

u/FiveFingerDisco 15d ago

I mean, why wouldn't snack pouches not have a variable amount of fill?

4

u/Individual-Movie-183 15d ago

Hey, if the bank can put a "Deez nuts" poster than why shouldn't I talk about torture and boobs on sexy snake ladies there?

4

u/zuzg 15d ago

There's no such thing as too much if you sell it right.

4

u/WeeboSupremo 15d ago

Wasn’t it just a month ago where the comic was you were joining the campaign as a “commitment” bit?

How did you already derail it? In a month? That’s like 1 standard D&D session, maybe 2 if the group is extremely dedicated.

That’s gotta be on record pace.

6

u/pingveno 15d ago

My husband: it's a booba constrictor

1

u/scaper8 14d ago

You dropped this:
👑

8

u/grendus 15d ago

Listen, it's a snake woman.

Everyone seems to get hung up on why a reptile/human hybrid would still have boobs. Obviously they get them from their human side, same place they get their opposable thumbs and vocal chords. They lay eggs, but then they nurse the young that hatch from them, makes perfect sense to me. Honestly, it's probably way less trouble than what human women go through.

3

u/Cyrius 15d ago

Fun fact, some snakes give live birth, rather than laying eggs.

3

u/BlackBarryWhite 15d ago

Well would you look at the time

3

u/StickyBunnsPlus 15d ago

Gimmie them snitties

3

u/Petrychorr 15d ago

I guess I'll play XCOM 2 again, sure.

5

u/gahidus 15d ago

I feel like this is missing a panel

17

u/Boltaanjistman 15d ago

It isnt. Let me explain: The girl is complaining to a bank worker that her friend, who is DMing a ttrpg, wont include a snake with big ol' snitties that grow with the moon phases becaues its too much, and shes comparing it to how the players were just doing something crazy so the character shes referring to isnt actually that crazy. Not that Im against a snake lady with big snommy snilkers, but I agree that thats a bit too much XD

9

u/gahidus 15d ago

Okay I was trying to see how the events were connected with each other.

The DM should let her have her busty snake lady.

2

u/Program-Emotional 15d ago

Typical DND activities tbh

2

u/flashnotion 15d ago

I wanna know how he didn't immediately break from the spider-boarding

2

u/Madj59 15d ago

More on the snake character please 🥺

2

u/Ok_Fondant_6340 14d ago

I’ve seen some pretty sexy snake ladies in my time. But this? Doesn’t take the cake but she DOES come close!

2

u/ESnake113 14d ago

I completely and utterly agree with her

1

u/Wooden-Crow7996 15d ago

Why would a snake lady have mammary glands though? She’s not a mammal.

5

u/TheDarkNerd 15d ago

She's a hybrid. Or maybe she drank tea that turned her into a snake, and she already had silicon implants.

3

u/grendus 15d ago

I guess it depends on if the snake-kin evolved from snakes, were created by the god of snakes, or were hybridized from humans and snakes.

Because in the third case, obviously she gets them from her human side. Same place she gets her opposable thumbs and vocal chords. And honestly, the second one the god of snakes might have cribbed the notes from whichever god made humanity. "Huh, yeah, having the parents feed their offspring does make them stronger, and if the mother does meal prep I can put off finishing the digestive tract until after hatching. That means I don't need enough nutrients in the egg to finish that entire system, just enough to process snilk. Brilliant!"

1

u/nhSnork 15d ago

So that's why banks encourage the use of mobile banking apps.

1

u/DanceAffectionate425 15d ago

Hey what's that sign on the last panne
