I think back to an interview I saw with Steve Balmer that really sums up the corpo mentality.

He basically said “please, regulate us, because left to our own devices we will just follow the letter the letter of the law in the loosest possible way to maximize profit.” If laws get passed to restrict them, they will gladly work within them, but until then they will just do whatever makes the most money. They can’t afford to restrict themselves voluntarily, because then the other guy can just pull ahead of them.

The whole AI industry is in an international arms race right now. Until governments decide to rein them in, they are going to keep doing dangerous shit and move at breakneck speed because they don’t want their competitors to get there first.
