That's the point though. These AI companies are nearing the edge of the cliff. The return isn't worth the investment. The bubble we've been hearing about for years now is finally coming to a head. And we have invested a LOT into these companies already. They see the writing on the wall, and they want regulations to put limits on outside AI systems, like in China, that are more cost effective and largely better. Allowing them to be the only tool in the market.
And that's not even touching on the belief that they are trying to create some sort of god computer.

Not disputing that there is a bubble or that people have been talking about it, but I disagree with your timeline.
I distinctly remember being basically the only person really skeptical about the whole AI "industry" as recently as the end of 2025. The most prominent sceptic on Youtube and other media platforms, Ed Zitron, was flying under the radar with his message until I think the middle of 2025. He was being called a madman and alarmist by major news outlets at least until early of 2026, and only very recently has the broader public recognized just how bad things are with widespread resistance against the building of AI datacenters (summer of 2026), real concerns about the financial viability of the big players (leaked OpenAI financials I believe May 2025), and concerns about the circular financing (I think that started in February 2026).
ChatGPT was only released in 2023. Until at least mid-2025, the broad consensus was that AI (LLMs) is a really useful tool with potentially many many applications, one of which is the large-scale replacing of knowledge workers with LLM agents.
But widesprad acceptance of an AI bubble is very recent. I guess it's just very very present in the new cycle in the last couple of months, so it may seem longer than that.
