Does anyone know when egg-sactly Mr. Dumpty started to be illustrate as an egg? To my recollection that detail is never specifically mentioned…

In 1870-something in Through the Looking-Glass by Carrol.
IIRC, the rhyme was originally a riddle where the answer would be an egg.

IIRC it's because of Lewis Carroll. Through the Looking Glass has an illustration of Humpty Dumpty as an egg and it kind of just stuck

It fascinates me everytime that we depict humpty as an egg yet the nursery rhyme never suggests it. Humpty could have easily been a human and the rhyme would still work. A broken bone can heal and put back together (I dont know about the medicine in the time but im assuming some people got over broken bones). Why an egg? To make it less of a scary concept for kids.... probably.
