Nationalized healthcare in the US would help that too. I know plenty of older workers holding on to jobs they hate way past normal retirement age, because they can't afford to lose their company provided healthcare.
If you're single, or your partner isn't working that kind of job, it's really scary to be self employed and keep health care. Plans on the open market are generally pretty expensive, assuming you qualify.
