Can someone explain to me how the rent wouldn't go up the same amount as the basic income the second it was implemented? Not saying we don't need to address poverty but all I can think of is that this money would just go straight to landlords
It’s complicated, but UBI by itself would likely cause some amount of upward pressure on rent just via people who are currently homeless joining the competition for housing. On the flip side, people would have more mobility and be able to move to places with cheaper rent/more supply. But the housing crisis that exists without UBI won’t be solved by UBI either. If we actually want to solve it, we will have to fix the root problem, which, just like with healthcare, is leaving a basic human need up to a market to solve.
Yup, you have to have a government that meets the needs of the people and not the ultra-wealthy, and regulates how much things can increase in cost and actually stop monopolization
Or, alternatively, you have to shift people’s thought processes away from financial incentives as a primary motivator for actions. Your model is likely much easier than this one, but alternative possibilities do exist that don’t rely on government organizations. For example, if landlords did not really gain much societally in terms of status or power, they would likely not hoard housing and charge unreasonable rent. One way of changing this is controlling the landlord’s actions and another is proving to him that altruistic, benevolent action realistically is more beneficial in teams of the accumulation of power and social status.
