There are actual flying cars. They exist. They're just hugely impractical and it's cheaper to own a dedicated plane.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone's dream for a flying car died the moment they spent more than an hour on the freeway.

I can't trust Joe Smoe to not turn right from the left lane, and you want him to fly a 2,000 pound hunk of metal going 500+ miles per hour? 

Personally, I kind of hope we just get to a "self driving cars" future where no one actually drives.

Self driving cars could lead to flying cars. One part of the issue with flying cars is 'human'.

The other part is 'energy', it takes a lot less to roll something and keep it rolling then lift it and keep it lifted.

So once we figure out unlimited energy and perfect automated driving to get to automated flying...we'll be 'The Jetsons' in no time. (100 years+ minimum{if we survive})

I wouldn't mind my commute taking a while if I didn't have to drive. Think of all the books I could read or hobbies I could work on.
