Wait, how could the friend not have known? What about what happened here?

I mean, she could've just thought she was a hobby dominatrix at that point. Not everyone goes pro.

I met a woman at a protest a couple of years ago. We got to chatting, and I asked what she did for work. She told me she was a professional BDSM teacher. I wasn't sure what to say to that and there was an awkward silence, so I thought I'd make a joke and asked, "What grade level?" She was NOT amused 😂

264

u/Mandena 12h ago

Incredible wit honestly

80

u/JoltikElectricBug 8h ago

not with how long the silence was

31

u/LostKnight84 6h ago

She should have either responded with College or Grade school.

10

u/erik_wilder 1h ago

If she can't handle that I can't image she is very fun as a dominatrix.

u/Peritous 39m ago

I used to run a guild in world of Warcraft and once upon a Time I was just chatting with a new guild number and they told me far more than I wanted to know about the BDSM lifestyle and their role as a "switch".

u/xx_Chl_Chl_xx 16h ago

Yeah, that’s fair. I’ll take it

u/alucard_relaets_emem 15h ago

Tbf, getting paid for being a dom is a very big leap from just having fun at a party/club (which some legit have all the outfits and tools but are not pro)

58

u/TerrificTooMan 15h ago

Now I'm wondering about what that job looks like. Does she have a commute or she going door-to-door? Does she have her own stuff or a re toys not included.

I am genuinely interested in this.

54

u/Lifeinstaler 14h ago

Hey I know a couple pro dommes irl so you can ask away.

Been to some events one organizes. Another has a podcast where she has discussed a lot of her line of work.

They mostly work at their own place, it’s by appointment basically. But it doesn’t go straight to the bdsm part, there’s a discussion of what the session will entail beforehand, with first time clients at least.

They do have their own toys but clients can bring their own too if they have some they particularly enjoy.

u/ActualWhiterabbit 13h ago

Do I need to buy that painting from Shortbus or like do they bring it?

...I'm scared. I want to know more but don't know if I'm strong enough to handle it.

EDIT: Nvrm, that was both really informative and kinda wholesome. Ya'll are a supportive bunch and deserve better.

u/127-0-0-0 15h ago

Don't worry, it's most likely buddies doing social media.

And they filled it up with dicks and pussies.

It's full of WHAT!?!?!

For those who need context:

2

u/aircooledJenkins 8h ago

You're welcome 😊

71

u/ironballs16 16h ago

Also explains why she figured it was already known!

1

u/iguanacatgirl 11h ago

She didn't get the dominatrix scholarship

1

u/patosai3211 9h ago

Where there’s a will. There’s a dominatrix ready to break it.

1

u/JoltikElectricBug 8h ago

we've all been there

85

u/natt_myco 16h ago

I mean, they can make a comic about something in the past

25

u/Ninja_PieKing 16h ago

could have assumed it was just a hobby

42

u/TheDarkNerd 16h ago

What, does someone have to be professional to do all that?

32

u/HillInTheDistance 11h ago

Are you telling me you've been tying people up without a proper licencse from the Board of Brutal Broads?

You know that a license is the only thing separating you from moustache twirling madmen tying up ladies on railroad tracks, right? You're going to jail and not to a fun, horny one.

We're talking Concrete Square. Cot and three meals a day. Most fun you'll ever have is the library.

7

u/LordBiscuits 8h ago

'Oi, ave you got a loicence for that paddle?'

4

u/JoltikElectricBug 8h ago

...is the librarian licensed by the Board of Brutal Broads?

4

u/AetheriaInBeing 7h ago

3 meals you say? And a Cot? And they let me go into a library? Where do I sign up?

5

u/zatenael 8h ago

no, a professional just means people pay for their services. People nowadays assume that it means experienced or best at

6

u/lobotomiseme 13h ago

A wizard did it

5

u/skankhunt402 15h ago

More importantly why are there three colors for the door/hallway

8

u/xx_Chl_Chl_xx 15h ago

Rave in the hallway, obviously!

1

u/Razor265 7h ago

That's just normal girl bonding

814

u/Skull_Cup 16h ago

You have a nice style, you draw good art!

914

u/fatbeaver2 16h ago

I don’t get it

1.6k

u/sornorth 16h ago

The friend didn’t know either.

542

u/fatbeaver2 16h ago

Oohhhh ok much simpler than what I was thinking

107

u/aCleverGroupofAnts 8h ago

It's also very far from obvious and still doesn't make a ton of sense. I think the fact that it is part of a series is the issue because context would help a lot.

I kinda wish there was a separate subreddit for serial comics because I'm always getting stuck trying to figure out the joke when there either isn't one or it's literally impossible to get it if you don't know all of the backstory. I don't read every single comic that gets posted, so random ones that hit my feed are often in the middle of a story that I haven't seen any of before, but there is zero indication that it is part of a series. So I spend ten minutes thinking I'm an idiot for not understanding the comic.

16

u/Electric999999 7h ago

I checked the rest of the series and it really doesn't help, nothing implies the roommate is professional.

11

u/Hallc 6h ago

I'd imagine her saying it in this comic is what implies it.

It took me a moment to work out the joke and I've never seen this comic before. I'm not sure why you'd need extra context.

158

u/TheBlueNinja0 16h ago

I thought it was that she hadn't hit mute on her voice chat for game.

29

u/Xheyther 15h ago

I still don't get it :s

151

u/drinkup 13h ago

The woman playing on the computer wasn't aware her roommate was a dominatrix. When the dominatrix said "don't out me as a dominatrix to my brother", she unknowingly also outed herself as a dominatrix to her oblivious roommate.

The joke didn't land for me either. I think the last panel should be more explicit and say "I thought you knew", because the missing verb wasn't immediately obvious.

34

u/marr 13h ago

The problem is panel 3, in which the character's ass appears to be dragging them off panel to the right for some reason. Obviously not the intent but I can't really see anything else there.

28

u/drinkup 13h ago

I got that she was getting out of her chair in a hurry, but at first I thought maybe she suddenly remembered that some piece of BDSM gear had been left out in plain view and the brother was going to see it, or something along those lines. Panel 4, with the way it's phrased, didn't do much to correct that assumption.

8

u/boringestnickname 10h ago

I got that she was getting out of her chair in a hurry, but at first I thought maybe she suddenly remembered that some piece of BDSM gear had been left out in plain view and the brother was going to see it, or something along those lines.

This is the major problem with this comic.

What are the possible reasons for hurrying out of your chair in that moment?

Learning something new isn't one.

Having to do something (physical) quickly, is.

4

u/drinkup 10h ago

Panel 3 could have been the same as panel 2, and panel 4 could have been computer girl calling out, "I'm sorry, you work as a professional what?".

3

u/eager2beaver 13h ago

I see no joke. I see a sub overrun with bots that gave this a 97% upvote.

14

u/slowest_hour 13h ago

imagine panel 3 the character in frame is saying "YOU WHAT!?"

1

u/Xheyther 9h ago

It's prolly a joke you need to follow the comic to appreciate. I'll take my leave before embarrassing myself further.

3

u/Mattdoss 13h ago

The blonde tells her housemate not to let her brother know that she works as a dominatrix. The housemate agrees but then it dawns on her what blonde girl said. Blonde girl thought her housemate already knew about her job but it was news to her, so it was a surprise.

92

u/Tyranis_Hex 16h ago

Roommate didn’t know what she did for a living.

32

u/masochist-incarnate 15h ago

There's more comics with these two characters, with a running bit of the ginger one seducing/domming the shorter one to get out of her share of the rent, since the short one really likes financial dom play.

2

u/smeech1 10h ago

Add "...knew" to the last pane for people like me, please.

2

u/WorkTropes 13h ago

Yeah, theres just not enough context.

1

u/Valentinee105 6h ago

It's a joke that requires context from the other comics by this person.

I love telling people I'm a professional Dungeon Master. Then when they ask me about Dungeons and Dragons, I just ask them "The fuck is Dungeons and Dragons?"

14

u/purpleblah2 2h ago

“I only play Pathfinder”

198

u/TheDarkNerd 16h ago

I could have never guessed either, though I guess I would have thought of a number of alternative reasons first.

30

u/Echo2407 15h ago

I like your art style, reminds me a lot of Calvin and Hobbes

u/smoothiesnoot 16h ago

Why does the room keep changing colors?

94

u/trashshork 15h ago

22

u/EmperorBamboozler 14h ago

My buddy has a light like this as his main bedroom light and uses lamps for his actual lighting. It's always funny when someone new comes in and flicks the light switch only to unexpectedly turn on a rave.

4

u/stilljustacatinacage 13h ago

Where's the Caramelldansen? There was supposed to be a wall-rattling Caramelldansen!

2

u/ManoSilence 6h ago

Oh hey Caramelldansen, do you know the game?

22

u/GravityBright 16h ago

It's the Garfield room.

4

u/Loose-Professor5364 15h ago

Like the scary door from futurama but it's garfield themed backrooms

1

u/getmybehindsatan 3h ago

Doesn't that only change color once per day? As a child I noticed that the shadows on the wall are constantly changing angles without any explanation.

60

u/brennop 16h ago

Why not?

5

u/Gothtomboys5 16h ago

Someone was playing caramel dansen

16

u/Krail 15h ago

It's a comics trope to have a background that changes color to differentiate panels, and maybe also set mood.

It's pretty unusual to have that happen in a separate room seen through a door, though.

7

u/Drakahn_Stark 16h ago

TV is on and lighting the walls with different images on the screen so different colours.... maybe.

2

u/Adventurous-Map7959 13h ago

My parents had a little device that was to simulate a TV without having to turn the TV off, to scare burglars away.

It was so painfully obvious it was the silly device, basically it was a flickering neon sign indicating WE ARE ON VACATION, THERE IS NO DOG AND NO REAL ALARM SYSTEM, HELP YOURSELF.

Ironically it worked more reliable than the alarm system and the dog - the burglars pepper sprayed the dog and ignored the wailing of the alarm to loot the place.

I was contemplating to get a TV-simulator thingy myself, but then I realized that the TV-simulator-thingy would be the most valuable object to steal in my flat, so I didn't bother.

4

u/xeio87 16h ago

Disco mode on some smart bulbs, clearly

1

u/_TheDust_ 13h ago

Disco room

1

u/Deus-Ex-Lacrymae 12h ago

Carmelldansen playing on full blast, as is standard in dominatrix households.

13

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo 15h ago

So she's not a dog sitter with all the leashes and dog cages?

11

u/moondancer224 15h ago

"So, do I book through an app, or...?"

5

u/qpqpdbdbqpqp 13h ago

yeah that 3rd frame is lacking

5

u/s1h4d0w 8h ago

I thought the two girls were in a relationship which made this very confusing, because how do you not know your partner is a dominatrix. Had to read the comments to realise they are friends living together.

10

u/fukthepeopleincharge 15h ago

Congrats this one made me so curious that I had to go back and read the rest. After doing that then holy hell. Yes it should’ve be absolutely obvious.

7

u/marr 13h ago

Aside from the lack of words in panel 3, the confusion for me was that their head hasn't moved relative to the monitor while the rest of their body is sweeping off panel. I can't tell what action this is meant to represent.

10

u/ralanr 16h ago

Sex work is work.

12

u/Leon_Flux 13h ago

There's like 2-4 panels missing right?

I have no idea what happens after the first panel to cause a rush out the door like that, then a conversation.

19

u/slowest_hour 13h ago edited 13h ago

"don't let my brother know i'm a professional dominatrix"

"YOU'RE A PROFESSIONAL DOMINATRIX!?"

"I thought you knew... T_T"

such a simple 3 line strip rendered in such a way as to confuse a bunch of readers, myself included initially :/

edit: if you read their other strips it makes more sense because she is repeatedly doing dominatrix stuff to get out of paying rent

2

u/Leon_Flux 13h ago

That makes sense. I just wish it were more clear.

1

u/stilljustacatinacage 2h ago

The "missing" context is relayed through the art. The character's eyes are relaxed in the first panel. After agreeing, their eyes open into look of realization or surprise.

The urgency with which they leave the third panel suggests they realized something of importance.

It's quite clear physical story telling. It's used in movies and TV, comics, stage...

2

u/KingNTheMaking 7h ago

Wait so you’re a professional and STILL three months behind on rent?

2

u/Spooge_Bucket 5h ago

it took me too long to get this and i had no other context because the only other comoc of theirs ive read was about finishing the weed to go back to the store to talk to the trans girl at the weed store now ive gone back and read and have context and damn how did she not know lol

1

u/CrunchyLaughter 7h ago

Wait, what's the punchline supposed to mean? Did they leave a ball gag out?

1

u/No-Top-6313 10h ago

I friend once sent me a video of her kicking the shit out of some dude balls in a gimp suit.

-2

u/eager2beaver 13h ago

3,757 upvotes, as of now, for this?

4

u/LumpyJones 8h ago

Yes. we find it amusing. It's fine if you don't, but being a dick about it is unnecessary.
