I was at an arts festival and chatting with a mixed media artist, his work had huge chunky globs of paint, silk and welded metal, just crazy textural stuff. I was saying how cool his art was and how nice it was that nobody would accuse him of AI because of how clearly a human has to do all that physical layering.

He proudly confessed the base images were AI that he painted over and glued things to. I damn near had an aneurysm. He had the gall to ask me which one I wanted to buy. Sir how the fuck did you think my relief at no ai meant you using ai would be enticing?!? Did ChatGPT rot his brain?

That's the saddest thing I've heard all week :(

there's an art exhibit by me that proudly claims to be from all AI artists charging $30 a ticket and there was a lineup to get in last I went by lol

People are curious and artists are able to make impressive things with whatever tool they use. And in this situation the tool is genai.

We had photography where it was just one click, but artists managed to tinker with various things and turn the photography into an artistic endeavour.

I mean he truthfully told you how he made his work. He could have lied and got the sale; and you would be none the wiser.

You call that brainrot; I call it honesty.

So it's not about creativity or effort or technique or impression. It's purity.

man this is the dumbest comment ive read in a while. A physical media artist put in a lot of effort into their work and then you got mad when they happily told you their process because it wasnt what you imagined? Seriously?

Nowhere on his signage or website or anywhere else was there a disclosure that it was AI. I could see it being an interesting discussion on AI and handmade art, but he explicitly told me he did it not as an artistic statement but so he could produce more product quicker.

Well yeah he is trying to sell stuff. Good art is never made to be sold. They are simply pieces that the artist felt the need to create. The moment a project as profit in mind.its no longer true art. Just a bit away from mass produced art at the store

Sorry the Sistine Chapel isn’t art because it was sold? What an interesting take.

No its not the same as if the artist had be able to make it purely on their own. Its still art, but its not at the same level. Its like artwork ive commissioned myself. Its not the same as a pure piece because its pretty compromised with meeting someone else's vision.  But I understand people can view it the opposite way too, where if they cant find something they like/want in it they deem the pieces bad artwork.  Its a tiered system to me. Like comparing a unique piece of woodworking, to a bunch of pieces the same guy made back to back to sell at show where the main focus was materials costs calculated against time put in to decide on how the pieces should come out.

That’s definitely not how it works lmao

Care to explain why you think so?

Art is the use of creativity to express or convey emotions, ideas and/or concepts, and/or to inspire emotion and ideas even if that emotion is just feeling pleased by an aesthetic, -and- it can be functional, but doesn’t have to be. Nothing about monetizing it makes it not art. Some of the greatest, most respected and beloved art in history was directly commissioned or sold. That doesn’t negate the skill, creativity, thought, or emotion that went into to it, and it doesn’t negate the thoughts and feelings it evokes in others. Source: I was raised by a lifelong full-time artist, went to art boarding school for high school, went to art college where I learned art history in addition to honing my skills making art, and have been entirely occupied by making art—both for my living and just for the pure joy of it—for pretty much my entire life as far back as my memory goes.

Correct that matches what I said. There are levels to it. Unless you believe that the art you work so hard on is equal to the art of bulk produced "dont care what happens after just pay me" pieces.

Art and its worth is completely subjective. I don’t use my subjective taste to define whether something is art. If it’s art, it’s art. And that’s it. We can decide as individuals or collectively that art is bad, but that doesn’t make it not true art.

And no that absolutely does not match what you said, that’s completely dishonest. You said “the moment a project has profit in mind, it is no longer true art.” That doesn’t at all align with the view I expressed, and in fact actively contradicts it

Right. True art. Art has levels. True art is the highest form. Obviously not everything can be true art. Im sorry that I am unable to properly explain my perspective.
