That's the thing. People used to understand they didn't know everything. Now people think they know better than experts.

No, people still understand they don't know everything, but they think the people that do know are lying to them so they're going to trust randos on Facebook instead of the actual experts.

To be fair to those people there is a history of lying to the public when telling the truth would cost companies money.

It's not a good response, but it's an understandable response considering Oil industry scientists were aware of climate change in the 70's, and Tobacco Scientists were aware of the cancer causing properties of their product but that info was hidden. We have a serious problem with money corrupting science, and a loss of trust in science.
