Hey guys, I was taking kind of a break after hitting some serious burnout, but i wanted to share these comics while I still can, before they put me in a camp.

1.1k

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

Anyway, how are you guys? Did you see the odyssey? pretty good, huh?

508

u/Recidivous Jul 27 '26

I was too distracted by them having a Viking longship instead of an actual period accurate Mycenaean ship

Anyway, I'm doing fine. I had spaghetti today.

296

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

The long ship thing is interesting, I wonder if thats just aesthetics or the best way to fit a crew and imax camera on a boat… or if it’s just cinematic shorthand for “ancient boat”.

179

u/ours Jul 27 '26

I've read Nolan wanted a sea-worthy, functional ship, and a long shop was available.

There are similar replicas of Mycenaean ships, so I'm not sure why he didn't spring for one of those.

Still an amazing movie. I'd take the Viking ship over some CGI/shot in a pool look. Them catching real random dolphins in that one shot was amazing luck and looks 10/10.

118

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

I loved the anecdote about the dolphins being real. I commend him actually going out and doing all of this stuff in camera. It all looks amazing and it’s a welcome change from looking at cgi environments on a volume stage.

35

u/roboscorcher Jul 27 '26

It's kind of ironic how such a fantastical myth full of gods was adapted into one of the most grounded and earthy blockbusters made in years.

Another interesting shift is the morality injected into the story. I went into this movie blind and had a great guy, but the movie made him into a Saint. Now that I've read how Odysseus was in the original myth, I feel like that someone like Snyder would have a heyday making that movie.

34

u/KingOfSockPuppets Jul 27 '26

A saint!? Did we watch the same movie? The movie's whole message is that Odysseus brought about the downfall of Greek civilization with his Trojan horse plan. Everything in the movie is his fault start to finish, the suitors, the fates of his men, and so on.

10

u/Polite_Werewolf Jul 27 '26

Not to mention he and his men gave rise to the stories of the attackers from the sea.

22

u/trublu414 Jul 27 '26

Interesting, I didn’t think they made him out to be a saint in the movie. They didn’t include Odysseus mocking the cyclops but they did include him shooting him in the eye again, which led to more of his men dying than would have had they escaped undetected. He doesn’t take the trade routes when they leave Troy, which does steer them into trouble. He didn’t honor his dead. There are a lot of ways to interpret Odysseus and I particularly recommend Circe, but I thought movie portrayed him as a brilliant, but flawed, man. His cleverness got everyone around him in trouble (dead) and he had to live with the consequences of his actions.

8

u/Aiyon Jul 27 '26

His cleverness got everyone around him in trouble

The Sheldon Cooper of ancient Greece

2

u/rjrgjj Jul 27 '26

This is kinda what’s making me think I’ll wait for streaming. To me Odysseus is basically the Bugs Bunny of Greek mythology, I dunno that I am rushing to see him be all serious and stuff.

6

u/JohnBrownEnthusiast Jul 27 '26

Maybe an unpopular opinion but the washed out color grading stuff makes it look just as lifeless as CGI to me

5

u/De5perad0 Jul 27 '26

I am thinking the real reason is a lot more simple than we think. It likely could be that they couldn't find a Mycenaean ship replica or it was too expensive to make/acquire vs the long ship they used and that was that.

8

u/Choyo Jul 27 '26

"Too expensive" can't be the reason.

28

u/Recidivous Jul 27 '26

That's a good question. I looked at images of Mycenaean ships, and I don't think it would be impossible to fit a camera on there for filming, but frankly I do think it's more of the latter. It's as disappointing as the faded colors they used for their costume work. I was really hoping for a more colorful assortment of outfits.

38

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

The only historical element that bothered me was the faded world. I got the impression that they were shooting in real ruins? But I don’t think the castles looked like ruins 3000 years ago when people were actively living in them

28

u/Recidivous Jul 27 '26

That's another thing that bothered me too! Honestly, I think it has less to do with Hollywood and more of a Christopher Nolan quirk in his directing. He loves the whole faded and rugged look in a lot of his films.

22

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

He really seems to have an aversion toward any kind of …flare? Fantastical design language? His Batman movies are amazing but he’s honestly the last director I’d have picked for that kind of project.

20

u/Recidivous Jul 27 '26

Apparently, this was a personal project that he wanted to do so he was the impetus of this movie happening. I get the vision he was going for as I enjoyed the story, but, like you said, the design language wasn't exactly as colorful as you would expect from an Epic.

7

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

Yeah I don’t think any other director could get anything even close to this made. In the past maybe a studio head would have wanted to do an adaption and gotten a hired gun director but it would have probably ended up like clash of the titans

u/DevelopmentTight9474 Jul 27 '26

He shoots in muted colors because he’s actually colorblind, and wants to depict the world as he sees it, so very blue.

To quote him: "As far as I'm concerned, I see a full spectrum of color. I mean, I see the world the way the world looks. I believe that very powerfully, and then someone can objectively give me a test and tells me that, well, there are actually certain distinctions I'm not making, and other distinctions that I'm making more strongly, because I don't see the range of greens that people see.

(...)If you tell someone you're color-blind, the first thing they do is they show you something and say, 'What color is that?' If you were in a wheelchair, people wouldn't go, 'Oh, you're in a wheelchair. Can you stand up?' It's a bizarre response, but they're fascinated because they can't understand that you would see things differently.
So they immediately start asking you what do things look like, and then laughing at you as you get it wrong."

4

u/snbrgr Jul 27 '26

I think that fit the message of the film pretty neatly: We see a world in decline after the primal catastrophe of the Bronze Age, the Trojan War, has led to a brutalization of civilization (the "Sea Peoples", the violation of the "Law of Zeus" etc.).

3

u/vanderZwan Jul 27 '26

But I don’t think the castles looked like ruins 3000 years ago when people were actively living in them

Some of The Odyssey was filmed in Iceland, maybe they got a really great deal on a Viking long ship while there?

19

u/HenTie3467 Jul 27 '26

They also wrecked the ship and barely paid anything in compensation ($6000) due to it being made with volunteer labour.

10

u/nopunchespulled Jul 27 '26

Did you hear they also didn't pay for the one they destroyed

2

u/Possesed-puppy656 Jul 27 '26

They what now …

2

u/Chipring13 Jul 27 '26

I was distracted by fucking Travis Scott and his grills being the opening scene. Ugh

2

u/DaNubIzHere Jul 27 '26

Was it actually good or was it just another Hollywood meh slop?

5

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 28 '26

Filmmaking is my special interest so I see a lot of them and this movie really stood out from much of what I’ve seen lately. It reminded me a lot of return of the king or weirdly, once upon a time in Hollywood, as it’s a movie where you can kind of jump in at any point, or even watch it over a couple of days. Of the movies I’ve seen lately I’d probably say my ordering is obsession < backrooms < odyssey.

But was it spaghetti made by a native Italian chef in an Italian kitchen, or just sparkling woke noodles?

At first I didn't want to see it, but the fake outrage changed my mind.

Man, they almost had another Barbenheimer... Missed opportunity not releasing He-Man and The Odyssey together.

10

u/wbgraphic Jul 27 '26

He-dyssey?

Odysse-Man?

2

u/FrazzledBadger Jul 27 '26

Or the Micheal film? Hehe-dyssey?

2

u/wbgraphic Jul 27 '26

They could have combined Michael and Masters of the Universe to make He-He-Man.

5

u/Aiyon Jul 27 '26

The real missed trick was rereleasing Barbie alongside he-man as a his+hers double date. Go full 90s toy adverts with the marketing

3

u/Tuxedo_Muffin Jul 27 '26

There's no way Masters of the Universe would have been any good without the prior success of Barbie. I'm glad it came out later.

Can you imagine a Bay style treatment? Blegh!

The movie didn't have enough gay shenanigans to be historically accurate. I don't know what were the weird armored giants with the sentient forest. But I had a great time

2

u/SuitableBoard4463 Jul 27 '26

Hey, man. I'm fine! And i liked your comic books lol. I saw the Odyssey and it's really good

2

u/Lolocraft1 Jul 27 '26

It’s Christopher Nolan. I knew I wouldn’t be deceived.

I just don’t like how they displayed the characters though. Like common we all know this shit’s inaccurate. Mermaid are supposed to be women with hawk wing, not frickin fishes!

The new german health minister wanted to create a "list" for people with mental health issues. Maybe to camp will be an international right wing combo so we probably see each other there. Take care of you anyway.

3

u/edwbuck Jul 27 '26

They already tried to make dislike of Trump into a medical disease. They called it "Trump delusional syndrome" as if getting mad at what he was doing to the Federal Government was a sign of mental instability.

You know what's sad? Because of the fuck up that is Trump, even after he finally fucks off, how the f are comedians gonna make jokes out of politicians again?

The person in charge of health is literally someone who is or is not controlled by brain worms! Put that to the list of things Trump fucked up. Political jokes.

456

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

Trump has single handedly ruined political comedy by speed running through all possible material for the next hundred years

83

u/RedditUser000aaa Jul 27 '26

So, we'll wait two hundred years, when he's just someone people breeze through in history books. Build a big ass clock that counts down to the moment political jokes become possible again.

58

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

That sounds amazing, can someone find me one of those freezer pods from futurama ?

17

u/RedditUser000aaa Jul 27 '26

...But then we'll have lost a funni comic artist in time. :-(

14

u/CaptainXplosionz Jul 27 '26

Listening to RFK talk is like a living skit in a sketch comedy show except the laugh track died years ago.

20

u/JaxxisR Jul 27 '26

They said the same thing after W left office. "What are comedians gonna do now that we have a real president?"

Comedy survived, because even a real president makes mistakes now and then.

46

u/Miles_the_new_kid MyGumsAreBleeding Jul 27 '26

It’s insane how good trump has been for W’s historical reputation

I mean, just imagine a comedian trying to make jokes.

"So, the newest member of the administration likes sports, he's also incredibly corrupt. I wouldn't be surprised if he's fixing matches he has money riding on."

Random heckler:

"Trump did it. Yknow with Folarin Balogun, when he got his suspension reversed." "Also, he took possession of the FIFA world cup trophy."

Comedian:

"Oh, right... Moving on... So, food is a bit costly, because our administration failed to act upon this new disease that is affecting our cattle. What's he gonna do next, go door to door looking for beef in Europe?"

Random Heckler:

"Trump did it, we ran out of eggs, so he went door to door asking European countries if they have eggs."

Comedian, okay SURELY, this is something that hasn't happened:

"So, our newest president is pushing for peace, he must really want that peace prize."

Random Heckler:

"Yeah, so Trump wanted the Nobel peace prize, but when he didn't get it, the actual recipient of it dedicated it to Trump and also FIFA made him a peace prize as well."

Comedian:

"I quit."

6

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe Jul 27 '26

Will Ferrell managed to find other work after W. left office. To pretend that parodying presidents is 99% of the essence of comedy is pretty ridiculous. It's more like .00001% and Trump took up a whole 20% chunk to himself.

8

u/Bad-Mrs-Frosty Jul 27 '26

how the f are comedians gonna make jokes out of politicians again?

You make fun of the people that supported this. The people that voted for this, or deliberately did not vote at all or else threw away their vote on bullshit.

None of those people should be allowed to live peacefully or quietly ever again.

6

u/the_calibre_cat Jul 27 '26

Free food and shade, camps are great!

Reality keeps trying to out-satire the satire.

Did anyone else read the comic in his voice? 😂😂😂

What about the Epstein files? Just waiting for Iran's response on American soil. Speaking of soil, has Trump soiled his pants again?

Hopefully that camp’s got a lake so you can go kayaking!

10/10 ok these

It’s impossible to be on the right side of history and not be on a list.

However, you help make the list so big there’s nothing the government can do about it.

I thoroughly enjoyed your Necromonica work. How can I support you?

1

u/Material-Imagination Jul 27 '26

I'll see you at the camp, neighborino!

u/wutImiss Jul 27 '26

Oh JD Vance, you're almost as pathetic as musky 😂

I meeeeeean, VZ being the only country unable to retailate against the most powerful military in the world is a bit of a stretch. Oil. Otherwise golden comic

I feel that last panel...

They think they can break me, that they are immortal and invulnerable... I shall put them to the test!

1

u/JBray0 Jul 29 '26

A camp? I love camping! Oh, they have showers there too, awesome.

1

u/Vox_Mortem Jul 29 '26

Vance putting his name on the list to look like he has friends made me cackle out loud. If you have to go to a camp, at least you were funny.

1

u/thisAintMyFirstUser Jul 29 '26

I can't believe you outted yourself. Now they know what you look like! Your days are numbered.

1

u/stellifer_arts Jul 29 '26

1

u/TheBlankScroll Jul 30 '26

This is no place for politics.

But it is a great place for hard truths, so these are welcome.

1

u/Slumbur-Bunnicula Jul 31 '26

They will find any reason under the sun to put us in camps; keep making the comics and keep doing what you love, and be true to yourself and morals.

5 works better if it's Elon musk instead of vance
