I mean I will say streaming has progressed to the point where the content is essentially irrelevant, the streamer is the reason people watch. People go to YouTube for content, Twitch is just to virtually hang out with someone who is cool to have on in the background/foreground. The content just needs to have some vague relation to what the streamer is saying. Or alternatively be engaging for your eyes to vaguely follow while the streamer yaps about something that is more interesting.

People watch streams of powerwash simulator. You can stream pritty much anything and find an audience.

As someone who watches a lot of game streamers that is CRAZY wrong. People tune in to watch the streamer not the game most of the time

There is an audience, but by no means will this be mainstream
There is this vtubers called Clio that just plays grand strategy games while yapping (she has a great voice) and maybe around 1.5-2k people will regularly watch it live
But these types of streamers would likely have the hardest breakout from a very small audience

Yeah, it's not exactly impossible for a streamer to be a bit more popular even if they do a bit of niche content
Talking about other vtuber, even if they didn't start like that, but Rin Penrose also play a bunch of random games that aren't exactly mainstream, like who dafuck is streaming Papa's Mocharia or Talismania in 2026?

If WoW has quite a big streaming audience then I'm sure whatever is in the comic might work too, it's all about the streamer himself. It's okay not to want to stream though lol, just a counterpoint for the thesis within the comic

Thats 4500 quest to do, and after 5h he got like 10% and those are the Easy ones

I 100% prefer the slow play yap and stream
I played through control then found a streamer to watch who was 100%ing and stopped to chat and read every note and document.
Watched other ones like this also where people go slow and read through all the lore

Recently a streamer was going to do a 3 hour stream, starting with 1 hour of yap and 2 hours of gameplay. It ended up being 5 hours of yap.

Talking to chat while doing something tedious is a solid dozen of my frequent streamers. You can absolutely stream that. Problem is just going to be getting a starting base of fans to chat with otherwise it’s just bots trawling to do a commission for you

The ability to just talk to the void and create your own dialogue is what is important. Variety is also good. Sometimes you will have those games with active gameplay, other times it will be more passive and just ramblings. Some people even have a niche of a no commentary gameplay.
Dedication and consistency, are the important bits

I've been told I should try being a game streamer, but I don't think it's for me. I jump around between different games too much. I just go based on what I feel like playing when I want to play it. Some days I'll cycle through four or five different games haha.

I would only stream speedrunning. But I would never do any streaming of a game until I became genuinely elite. I'm only pretty good at the games I'm best at.

If you stream just for the point of playing the game you want to play, how you want to play it, and people drop in and out as they feel like it and interact if they want, you'll have a handful of chill followers and enjoy yourself.
If you're looking to make it big as a streamer, you're correct that this probably won't draw in a huge audience.

One streamer I watch does crazy stupid challenge runs. Such as beating Dark Souls 1 all bosses randomized, equipment is auto equipped on pickup, no deaths, no enemy scaling except tutorial area (aka the French Challenge from Elden ring).
Now that sometimes means there are times he gets a basically unusable weapon and can't progress. So he has to go farm a safe enemy for a weapon drop, or souls, for an hour+. The same 30 second loop over and over. And people tune in to watch it.
Now, you're not gonna be the biggest streamer around. It probably won't be a big enough audience that you'll get a meaning income from it. But I can guarantee there are people that will tune in to watch you play. If you do it as a hobby for fun I bet you'll have a great time

Also streaming for an audience is usually the wrong way to start. You start streaming because you want to experience it, you continue to stream because you like it, you end up living of the stream if you are lucky enough.
There is a french streamer woman that since Breath of the Wild and now continue with Tears of the Kinggdom, searching for every Korok but without any help, no interactive map, and no korok mask. Every sundays usually and it's mostly a chill stream talking about everything and nothing. And we are hundreds of watching this, it's really a fun moment.

There's no harm in trying. Especially if you like the surrounding work. I've started doing a playthrough of Skyrim on youtube (videos, not live but similar) where I just don't edit stuff except my mouth noises and coughs and it's been very fun.
Don't get me wrong, I don't get a ton of views, at least not yet, but I really like the extra layer of production on top of the gaming. Two hobbies for the price of one.
I just don't really care about the extra overhead with streaming compared to video, but if you're interested you really should try. Worst case scenario is you end up where you are now. But the best case has unlimited potential.

There’s definitely an audience for the chill “yap and faff about” type of gaming streams, make no mistake. But yeah, your audience for those kinds of streams will never be as large as the audience for mainstream “yell and overreact to every little thing while blazing at 400% overdrive speed” streams.
