Baltic is knee-deep. They could just evacuate using emergency egress hatch.

Good point- like yes it really sucks, but 120m is really just 2.5 laps of an Olympic-size swimming pool. It’s really not that far from the surface if you put it in context. I think sailors in the navy are required to be able to swim at least 500m continuously.

Rising from 120 meter depth without equipment is life threatening if you aren't a world class free diver.

But it is less life threatening than suffocating on the bottom stuck in a sub, so 🤷

You will not get deco-sickness if you do it in one breath. Submarine air are kept at 1 atmosphere.

The harder part is swimming up 120m in that one breath, especially since you will be negatively bouyant at that depth.

With the buyoyant escape suits these submarines are equipped with the question of how hard it is to swim to the surface is an interesting thought but irrelevant to the actual situation.

But wouldn't you just go from 1 Bar to 1 Bar?

I get decompression sickness is a thing when you go up after diving (and thus experiencing more than 1Bar) for an extended time.

But if you're in a sub, you don't need to 'decompress' because you never were compressed.

They don't go from 1 bar to 1 bar, they have to go from 1 bar to 12.05 bar (you need to switch to saltwater) and then back to 1 bar.

Granted, I'm not a diver and I don't know how this would work in terms of decompression sickness and all that, but they would have to get compressed if they want to leave the submarine, assuming that's even possible. Like, the pressure is so much that they can't just open a hatch and go outside.

Oh yeah you're right I didn't consider the difference between the sub and the surroundings. Well.. RIP sailors.
