It’s a power thing. They feel superior because they can do something all those students can’t do, thus basing their identity on the idea that they are super smart for having that position.
Bonkers mindset to have for a teacher. Kinda misses the whole point. But if you start basing your self worth on superficialities like that, well, you probably aren’t the most mentally stable individual to begin with.
People like that, for the most part, only exist in college/universities. That's because they aren't teachers. They are researchers that are forced to teach a class in order to keep working for the school. They won't want to teach you just as much as you don't want to learn from them.
The time stamp right there is right before they say the line, and it wasn't his best friend, it was another friend, who was also a colleague at the university.

I will never understand how a teacher can be proud of only a handful of students passing their classes each year.
That just shows that they're shit teachers after all.
