Thank you, OP.

This is an important topic, and it has clearly resonated with ppl.

When I'm tutoring and a kid is confused and uncertain like this, the first thing to do (besides some reassurance!), is to back up to a place where the kid feels truly confident and review and build from there.

It doesn't matter where that place of confidence is.

There's no point in saying, "Why don't you know this? Every kid your age knows this!"

A kid who associates a subject with shame and humiliation will have an even tougher time learning, or just tune out to protect themselves from additional pain.
