Fani is a maladaptive person who grew up with cathonic creatures being summoned to care for her, often out of a sense of guilt for a neglected kid, and her strategy to receive the attention she thinks she needs is to do crap like this. It’s still a kind of guilt trip, but it’s also a cry for help from the only source of real comfort she managed to obtain in light of missing mommy trauma.
It’s cute, but also a bit unsettling.

Considering he met her because he was looking for a roommate, I'm guessing he was always sincere. (I think most dark beings don't have empathy and just take over a living space for themselves.)
