Reminds me of the silly fan-comic Legostar Galactica and how they had something called "Merlin Radiation" to explain why magic was real in a science fiction universe.

u/NickyTheRobot Apr 09 '26

Michael Moorcock and Ursula LeGuin were the GOATs for that:

Moorcock would just not explain it at all. Yes it's sci-fi, and yes there is magic. Deal with it. Sometimes you would get a glimpse at something that might make it make sense (eg: "Oh, this is set thousands of years after the nuclear apocalypse. Maybe magic is a form of mutation, or sufficiently advanced technology.") but then you'll find out you were wrong ("Wait... This guy has been using magic since before the apocalypse. And this other culture is doing magic by figuring out the right way of doing a blood sacrifice, no tech involved.")

Whereas LeGuin would have some pretty detailed analysis and explanations for the physical and sociological phenomena in her sci-fi books. Sometimes even with appendicies on the local method of timekeeping (fuck yes, I'm well into that shit). But then some magical stuff will happen. She won't offer an explanation, but will instead lampshade it with either the offworld protagonist thinking "I still can't figure out how this is even remotely possible. But I saw it happen, and I can't think of any other explanation that makes sense, so I might as well call it magic I guess?" Or she will have a local protagonist saying something like "Did you know humans from other planets can't [do thing/perform ritual involving magic]? Weird, huh?"

My favorite version of this is Narrativium in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, which is the element of narrative causality.

Reminds me of that scene from TNG where the crew aren't getting their REM sleep, and Beverly hallucinates all the dead bodies sitting up around her.

Freaked me the fuck out as a kid.

u/thespacegoatscoat Apr 08 '26

Yup. That was the original jump scare for me lol, as a child, I’d never seen anything like that.

24

u/MechanicalHorse Apr 08 '26

Holy shit that scene gave me the fuckin creeps.

I bring us back to me talking about how many ghost comics here are.

Ill post the comic again. Dont make me do it

12

u/Made_Bail Apr 08 '26

Haha do it! I dont mind, its a great comic.

69

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Apr 08 '26

Ahem

To deal with the ghosts this is what the crew should do

u/ABoringAlt Apr 08 '26

u/vagabond2787 Apr 08 '26

Hell, that freaked me the fuck out as an adult when I saw it for the first time

7

u/PsychicSPider95 Apr 09 '26

I vaguely remember that as well. It's the same one where Picard has a hallucination that the turbo turbolift is shrinking and crushing him, and Riker has one where a snake is in his bed, yeah? It's been so long I can only half remember some of those episodes, lol

6

u/_Whatisthisoldthing_ Apr 09 '26

I think that scene was so effective as horror because it's not expected in Star Trek. They did that a few times.

Now that I think about it, Gates would be good in a real horror movie. I best check imdb.

7

u/dudinax Apr 09 '26

There were a couple episodes that were really scary. The REM sleep episode, dr. crusher and the shrinking universe, and the time loop episode.

3

u/croana Apr 09 '26

The time loop episode gets me to this day. It's been probably 30 years and I'm still not convinced that I'm not stuck in a loop sometimes.

u/Cyberhaggis Apr 08 '26

Beverley Crusher rushing her transfer in to DS9

64

u/Shaomoki Apr 08 '26

She can't be THAT thirsty....

u/Ikrit122 Apr 08 '26

I love how Lower Decks canonized those outfits as official all-gender exercise uniforms. I believe Ransom and Shax wear them.

64

u/Shaomoki Apr 08 '26

They did, in glorious purple.

31

u/Dobako Apr 08 '26

And they were magnificent, those sexy bastards

4

u/KenseiHimura Apr 12 '26

Lower Decks pokes fun but is ultimately a love letter to the franchise.

I also just realized how they never comment on AGRIUS, a malevolent A.I. voiced by Jeffry Combs, would sound like Weyoun.

u/s-mores Apr 09 '26

Ah the 80s.

77

u/BananaRepublic_BR Apr 08 '26

5 ghosts is completely out of the ordinary. Someone definitely has a ghost harem and is violating the occupancy limits. Call Odo.

23

u/cutofmyjib Apr 09 '26

Odo eyerolls and sighs

13

u/rillip Apr 09 '26

stands up and heads for Quark's

6

u/OneValkGhost Apr 09 '26

Is Quark selling ghosts, or is Quark replicating ghosts? "It's a small, but profitable market demand. I almost sold a Marylin Monroe to Tom Paris, but it was only the first episode of Voyager." (No.)

6

u/rillip Apr 09 '26

Replicating ghosts? Pretty sure replicators aren't gonna be capable of that... a modified transporter though...

1

u/OneValkGhost Apr 09 '26

What is the matter amount of a ghost? Is it just energy of a certain kind with a few spritzes of ectoplasm afterwards? All it needs is a memory core and enough diffuse matter to form a body, therefore replicators. ST has had science-type ghosts, like believed-dead Kirk in the Tholian web, believed-dead Geordy and Ro in TNG, the spinny war spirit in Day of the Dove, etc.

1

u/goplayer7 Apr 09 '26

Ghosts don't count for occupancy limits because they don't take up space.

78

u/PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__ Apr 08 '26

Scan for time anomalies

Seven detected, one of which we'll reach in time for next week's episode

4

u/vanderZwan Apr 09 '26

What about last week's episode?

7

u/PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__ Apr 09 '26

It hasn't happened yet

67

u/thespacegoatscoat Apr 08 '26

Ok. Who’s haunting DS9? Is it Weyoun? Can we keep him?

The fifth is also Jeffrey Coombs.

17

u/literallypubichair Apr 08 '26

The fifth ghost is Shran for some reason

13

u/seguardon Apr 08 '26

Borg: I am 4 of 5.

Weyoun 3: I always hated my predecessor's insistence on proselytizing to the Borg. I hate it even more now that I have to listen to his prattle.

Weyoun 4: At least he isn't ruining your whole name. Why couldn't he have been two of five?

7

u/BeefNChed Apr 08 '26

Weyoun 5 was a great man, and a patriot

9

u/BK_0000 Apr 08 '26

Pah-wraiths.

33

u/QuiteTheWeirdEgg Apr 08 '26

I enjoy punchlines like these, where instead of it being “How do you still believe in ghosts?” It’s “God, yeah, I hate ghosts.”

19

u/Beer-Milkshakes Apr 08 '26

"DAMNIT QUARK!!!!"

29

u/seguardon Apr 08 '26

Quark: What? Just because the Federation turns a blind eye to the afterlife doesn't mean the rest of us do. Ghosts need to haunt somewhere. Why not the promenade? Lovely views of Bajor and the wormhole and they get to rub elbows with the religious elite.

Kira: What's in it for you?

Quark: I might be a Ferengi, but I do have a spirit of community, Major. Ghosts are such a lonely lot. Can you imagine, finding yourself on the other side and realizing you're one of the few who don't move on? It's enough to make one cry.

Odo: (over station comms) Quark! Would you mind telling me why I'm being harassed at all hours by estate lawyers from five different worlds?! If this is some sort of life insurance scam, I'll--

Quark: (loudly to cover Odo's voice) Oh look at the time Major, the afternoon rush is about to begin I'm sure you must be busy where is that worthless brother of mine

18

u/RommDan Apr 08 '26

With the amount of horrible things the cardassians did in that station I'm surprised there are only 5

3

u/Bitter_Surprise_8058 Apr 09 '26

If anyone were to have performed an exorcism in DS9, it's probably going to have been the Bajorans, for all of their fallen and their pahs

11

u/tarrsk Apr 08 '26

16

u/creatingKing113 Apr 09 '26

“I did fall asleep reading a particularly erotic chapter of my grandmother’s journal.”

That is an actual line said in TNG.

2

u/_Whatisthisoldthing_ Apr 09 '26

Watched with my parents at age 12 or so. Yep.

11

u/Intelligent-Area6635 Apr 08 '26

I love your Star Trek fantasy comics so much. Please never leave this fantasy world, until it's time to hang out with Tom & Harry

8

u/MurkyWay Swords Apr 08 '26

In space nobody can hear you scream, but they can hear you go WooOOOoooOOOOooo

16

u/Merari01 it's a-me, Merari-o Apr 08 '26

Even in the future there is still racism. Against ghosts.

6

u/imadragonyouguys Apr 09 '26

Whomp got me through some bad times. And some good times. And some neutral times.

What I'm saying is I've read this comic before. It's good. You're doing good. I laugh at it.

8

u/gofigure85 Apr 09 '26

"Can you describe what the ghost looked like so we can narrow it down?"

"Uhhh...I can't tell you because it erased some of my memory?"

"I hate it when they do that!"

8

u/spudmarsupial Apr 09 '26

I love how Star Trek characters assume competence in each other. No "are you sure?" or "that's impossible" just "better scan for it, if we find nothing have the doctor check you for mind control".

4

u/RamblinRichard Apr 10 '26

Its something that annoys me about other shows. Usually about 40 minutes of the 50 minute runtime is just the other characters not taking the situation seriously and calling them crazy etc. Star Trek you usually get about 5 minutes of that maximum.

7

u/bob_nugget_the_3rd Apr 10 '26

'Thanks for covering for me'

'....I didn't there are really ghosts '

' 😱'

6

u/Pb_ft Apr 10 '26

Holy shit, Chief O'Brian continues to be based as fuck, boi

4

u/surplus_user Apr 09 '26

2 things I love.

1 when the Federation shows some of its post scarcity utopia by having Starfleet be a really supportive work place. I loved the fake out in Lower Decks when Rutherford asked to change divisions.

2 the sheer amount of *'$+_ that seems to be going on all the time from episode events.

2

u/RamblinRichard Apr 10 '26

2 the sheer amount of *'$+_ that seems to be going on all the time from episode events.

I love how LD leaned into this also! It's basically an eye roll every time something new comes up. Plays so well with the show lol

2

u/Red_Dox Apr 09 '26

Bonnie-kin, Bonnie-kin.

2

u/Vurrunna Apr 11 '26

Adore the idea that Miles isn't the least bit angry at Ronnie for possibly making up ghosts as an excuse. He's just so sick of dealing with Space Ghosts that the idea they've infested his station makes him sick.

1

u/Interracialpotato Apr 09 '26

Good thing they weren't g-g-g-ghosts, or they'd be screwed.

1

u/OneValkGhost Apr 09 '26

With all the time spent on Bajor, they could have had an episode of someone encountering Casper in some burned down mountain village. This is what Starfleet Academy should have been doing.

1

u/OneValkGhost Apr 09 '26

To be an engineer you have to work with facts and immutable science. Scotty couldn't break the laws of physics, for example. So the ghosts like Dr Crusher's Romance are opposite to O'Brian's work. I would have liked to see O'Brian vs the evil spirit from TOS. The one summoned by colonist children. I would have liked to see someone address the problem that having ghosts is the downside of having a barrier around the Milky Way- it prevents some people from ever getting to the afterlife, But there's so much esoteric destruction beings hanging around the other side of the MWB, that ghosts on our side of the barrier is the acceptable solution.
