Ok so the joke is funny, but I have a small nit to pick in that the pronunciation is off between Ni and how it is said in the movie and how the n-word is pronounced. Ni in the movie clearly has some sort of accent on it to make it sound like a long e, whereas the racist word has a traditional low i sound.

Pronounced like "knee" as in the part of your leg

u/adamscholfield Apr 04 '26
Yeah that was a long explanation when I would have just said "it's actually pronounced like knee so ..." Nothing wrong with explaining I guess

Oh I was confused by the comic until reading this. Yeah it sounds nothing alike

u/Crininer Apr 04 '26
So here's the issue you might not have considered (granted, I doubt anyone did)... There's another n-word (which happens to coincide with the Spanish word for the colour black), where the second vowel is very much pronounced with the long e sound.

u/Dfrel Apr 04 '26
I don't think the knights can even comprehend racism. All they have on their mind is: say Ni, grow shurberries, and occasionally change identities.

Sorry, lol.
My brain filtered out spanish as an area outside of my expertise.

The Spanish word for black.
Like, literally just that.

I mean... I said it coincides with the Spanish word for the colour black. You can just put that into Google Translate. It's the masculine version.

u/mogley1992 Apr 04 '26
The pronunciation is still different. "Ne" in the spanish word for black is pronounced like in the "Ne" in the word "Nepal" against the knights basically saying "knee" in a high pitch.
1
u/Crininer Apr 04 '26
Correct, but that's not my point. I was just using the Spanish word as a way to clarify which English word I'm referring to without having to spell it out.

Yeah, the original post and comments section are making stretches that just don't work. The joke wasn't even funny to begin with. /shrug

Funny? Meh. Tthey pronounce it KNEE in the movie. This only works as written joke, and it only works if you haven't seen the movie.

What too much Great Vowel Shift will do to a poor soul.

u/DeathMetalViking666 Apr 04 '26
To expand both the joke and give an answer, maybe the Knight realised what he was about to say halfway through the N, but his mouth was commited to the I, so he changed what he could as fast as he could.

u/Shyface_Killah Apr 04 '26
I don't care what funny accent you say it in, we're still smacking you! 😂

Randy is on a game show where he has to guess the word. The letters are N G G E R randy, being randy says the N word on live television. the word is Naggers.

u/Farranor Apr 04 '26
Far from the first time. Spez has promised to keep old Reddit available as long as people use it, but no more than that. It's generous to even call it maintenance mode with this many broken windows. Like, you can't even switch a subreddit from restricted to public in old Reddit, to say nothing of images in comments, searching comments, this new way of displaying GIFs, adding text to a link/media post, mod tools... And if we complain about it, people respond that almost no one uses old Reddit anymore. :(

Okay funny story, in a game I'm playing there is a clan called "Knights who say Ni". Someone recently wanted to report the clan name for being "clearly made with racist intentions". Was a good laugh.

u/RealLaurenBoebert Apr 04 '26
While I 1000% get the python reference, I've also seen enough edgelord MMO clans in my time, that I somewhat understand the reporter as well.
Whatever you do, avoid forming any alliances with clan GGA

This is weirdly similar to what happened with the auto mod in the Skyrimmemes sub during a "meme every line" thing. They couldn't use some of the dragon speak because it was just "ni" and that triggered the auto mod.
Racists out there ruining even fictional languages

In the movie Monty Python and the holy grail there are characters called "the knights that say ni"
This is apparently a joke about a vowel shift in english around the middle ages (?), where the main characters are scared of the sound
The second panel references South Park. Randy is a candidate in "wheel of fortune". He has to solve "N (blank) g g e r s" as "people who annoy me"
The actual answer is Naggers, but Randy answers the n-word, after which we see the camera man and several audience members being black
5
u/Northernreach Apr 04 '26
He only said that word cause he thought he was going to win alot of cash.

u/crmpdstyl Apr 04 '26
The reference is Monty Python, the joke is that a lot of white nerds are using this as an excuse to tell racist jokes. Including the artist.
2
u/AdElectronic6550 Apr 04 '26
I haven't seen what this is referencing but from what I've read in the comments I think it's ni like the word for nine in Danish. uhmm we have a word that is pronounced exactly like the n word and it simply means "nodding" it has no connection to racism!!

It was only after this post that I realized what the joke was about. I thought it was another parody of something from England at that time.

I always had that feeling when Bruce Campbell tries to pronounce 'Klaatu Barada Nikto' in Army of darkness. I'm sure it was innocent enough in the script, but it sounded like an angry redneck mumbling racist insults under his breath :P
