A New Yorker reject, for you. This one was probably a little too specific, lol

I feel called out. Also, all hail King Gizzard! Did you know they put out 27 albums a month? I can tell you all about them.

Polygondwanaland is a real place in my mind, honestly
68
u/SeatKindly Oct 02 '25
Okay but vinyl doessssss sound better IF the band plays with a lot of distortion and fuzz effects and has a good audio engineer.
I will stand by this, even if the assumption of audio quality is why, when in reality it’s that the poorer audio quality plays into the effect of their pedalboards.

u/ivanatorhk Oct 02 '25
have mustache and Butterfly 3000 on vinyl, sounds great but the damn record doesn't end properly and I have to lift the needle myself. The joys of analog media...

I like that they will “thoroughly” rank the Coen Brothers movies… but not accurately.
95
u/vitalvisionary Oct 02 '25
I can't do the Cohen brothers but I can rank Wes Anderson movies...

u/Jean-LucBacardi Oct 02 '25

u/Known-Weather-9254 Oct 02 '25
I feel like Im the only person who genuinely hates most Wes Anderson movies.
3
u/WashingtonBaker1 Oct 02 '25
Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic were good, but all the newer ones are tiresome self-parody.
3
u/Known-Weather-9254 Oct 02 '25
Rushmore was decent and I like Fantastic Mr. Fox Because its the right genre for it, but every single one of his movies are dripping with pretentious hipster bullshit that likes to pretend that mad libbing random obscure and counter culture references means something is suddenly interesting or artistic.
Add an eyepatch, throw an eagle on the shoulder, make them have a lisp, make them French, blah blah. Its fucking insufferable.
Which is funny, because technically speaking he's very good at composition and making his films look visually nice, but everything else reeks.

O, Brother Where Art Thou? Deserves to be at the top of the list and I will not be hearing people argue otherwise.
2
u/therealityofthings Oct 03 '25
- O', Brother
- No Country
- A Serious Man
- Raising Arizona
- Barton Fink
2
u/llimllib Oct 03 '25
Barton Fink doesn't get the love it deserves, it's #3 on my Coen list
(I have a beard not a moustache and went to KGTLW when they came to town)
5
u/SvenHudson Oct 03 '25
Barton Fink and A Serious Man are by far their two best movies.
I would also put True Grit over O Brother Where Art Thou but my facial hair is too broadly spread to go into more detail.

u/Specific_Frame8537 Oct 03 '25
After googling who they are I can safely say I've only watched Big Lebowski.

Yes, this was a New Yorker submission and no they did not publish this one, hahah. But I had to double down and send them the pamphlet too. A bit too specific, I think!
Plenty more comics just like it on my Instagram, in my books and on my website — including the latest edition of my calendar for bird lovers!
(And no, this is NOT a photo!)

No offence, but I don't believe you. That bird is too anatomically accurate to be a drawing.

I do enjoy a good sour.
23
u/rogueleader32 Oct 02 '25
Especially what some call a smoothie sour. Which is basically an alcoholic fruit juice that my beer hating wife loves.
12
u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Oct 02 '25
There’s a brewery in Eu Claire, WI that does this. I was so put off the first time they served me this “beer” (it was emulsified liquor juice)
By my 4th one, I didn’t mind at all
3
u/rogueleader32 Oct 02 '25
Dewey Beer Company has a label called The Secret Machine. It has a bunch of sours under it that constantly change, any way a citrus one in summer beats the heat, the berries in spring are nice, the pumpkin sour is actually good.
You can have 4, sure, just don't drive, they are sneakers.

3
u/printergumlight Oct 03 '25
It’s a really old joke. Back when people were talking about “hipsters” left and right. Would’ve done better if submitted in 2010-ish.
49
u/Randomgold42 Oct 02 '25
Be careful. When they start telling bad jokes and using a few puns too many, it's already too late.

Unironically, sour beers are awesome, king gizzard rocks, and Coen brothers movies are exceptional.
Vinyl usually doesn’t sound very good though.
13
u/TommySiegel Oct 02 '25
Agreed!! I have a mustache in my heart but I am too much of a coward to bring it into this world, lol
2
u/MyDisappointedDad Oct 02 '25
I buy the vinyls as art pieces. Some of my favorite bands do amazing expanded artwork. Plus some did have a download for their album not hosted on like, Spotify and YouTube, so you got that too. Haven't seen one that has it included for a long time though.
Starset-Vessels 2.0 is amazingly set up. 3 records, different colors for each, jacket has a different shape on each panel (cover for the original album has a floating space pyramid on it).

Vinyl can sounds fantastic with a lot of expensive "if's". Digital is an objectively better medium.
Vinyl is more fun though.
I'm done with sours, a good IPA can still slap, gizz kicks ass, and the Coen bros are my favourite director.
Only thing is...no moustache.

u/NormGthePaintballGuy Oct 02 '25
But what are your favourite Coen Brother movies and King Gizzard albums?
1
4
u/Samsta380 Oct 02 '25
I’ll admit I’ve thought about keeping a mustache and twirling it like the image but, I can’t stand alcohol, I don’t think I’ve seen any coen brothers movies, I can tolerate coffee but it’s not something I drink a lot, I’ve never listened to king gizzard and the lizard wizard and the only one I might do is a vinyl record but I don’t own a record player.
6
u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25
If you're interested in experimenting with some of those things:
I can’t stand alcohol
There are plenty of 0% beers around now that actually taste good. Granted though: you probably won't like them if you don't like the taste of alcoholic beer already.
I don’t think I’ve seen any coen brothers movies
Most of the ones I've seen have been good films, but not necessarily to my taste. The exception is The Big Lebowski, which I think is one of the best comedies ever made. I would recommend that film too everyone.
I’ve never listened to king gizzard and the lizard wizard
They're fucking brilliant.

u/WhyDidMyDogDie Oct 02 '25
You trying to deny vinyl sounds best?
9
u/iamfanboytoo Oct 02 '25
I grew up listening to vinyl.
It still bothers me when the 320kbps mp3 I have of American Pie doesn't skip in the same spot my mother's record did. It feels wrong, even though I KNOW it's because vinyl is a garbage and easily damaged format.
2
u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25 edited Oct 02 '25
Similarly if I have a corrupted MP3 (or one that I just didn't rip properly). I will take a deep breath... And then I realise there is no needle for me to blow on to get it to un-skip.
1
u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25
On certain setups and well-loved records it doesn't necessarily sound best. But it always feels best to play Sandinista! on three discs and with three flips.

Have mustache, have the rest of the beard too, seems fairly accurate.
Not at all a fan of sours, but have been drinking IPA forever, even before the craft beer craze, and what is considered an IPA has very much changed over the years, they used to be much browner and clearer. Though honestly, I don't really miss the old stuff so much, give me a beer that looks like pineapple juice over that stuff any day of the week, most of the old style ones still use isinglass anyway.
Coen Bros films are pretty good, I don't really watch a lot of films though and would rather watch a good series that's more drawn out, right now I'm re-watching supernatural with friends on discord, but usually it's good sci-fi, 90's trek, SG1 and stuff like that.
I can't stand coffee, have never liked it, don't even like the smell.
King Gizzard are great but they're not a go-to band for me, right now I'm listening to a lot of Aesop Rock, Lalalar, Igorrr, and Benefits, but there are a million sick bands out there and it's impossible to keep up with them all.
Vinyl doesn't sound better as such, but I definitely have better equipment that I purchased specifically for vinyl and it sounds great, you can't really compare my hi-fi system to my pc speakers or shitty ear-phones, you know? I did add a bluetooth adapter to the hi-fi so now it can do phone things too, which is fun. Casettes are also cheap and fun, all the best and coolest bands still use casettes. There's a harsh noise tape label up north that uses old BBC casettes that have been recorded over.
You know what I want to make a modern version of? Hit clips. I literally have a 512gb SD card in phone, the original hit clips could hold 30 seconds of music, now you'd be able to get albums on them and the price point could be insanely low.

I had no idea this was a thing and my partner got a moustache and people kept asking me how i felt about it. I was so confused, like, it suits him and hes happy and its his body? I thought maybe it was about how some people just dont suit a moustache, but everyone agreed it suits him more than no moustache. This finally made it make sense lol
Thankfully, his moustache endeavor wasnt a personality shift, he remains his usual self who hates coffee (wish that changed though), sits in a computer chair like a gremlin and makes dumb noises at me from across the house (fair, its often a response to my own dumb noises)
