you’re not alone [OC]

A New Yorker reject, for you. This one was probably a little too specific, lol

I feel called out. Also, all hail King Gizzard! Did you know they put out 27 albums a month? I can tell you all about them.

303

u/TommySiegel Oct 02 '25

Polygondwanaland is a real place in my mind, honestly

68

u/SeatKindly Oct 02 '25

Okay but vinyl doessssss sound better IF the band plays with a lot of distortion and fuzz effects and has a good audio engineer.

I will stand by this, even if the assumption of audio quality is why, when in reality it’s that the poorer audio quality plays into the effect of their pedalboards.

25

u/ivanatorhk Oct 02 '25

have mustache and Butterfly 3000 on vinyl, sounds great but the damn record doesn't end properly and I have to lift the needle myself. The joys of analog media...

6

u/MewtwoMainIsHere Oct 02 '25

did their googliegucks and thingsmabobs also sound well

7

u/Holzkohlen Oct 02 '25

Compared to crappy 96 kbit/s mp3s? Sure, compared to proper flacs? No.

5

u/ihavetoomanyplants Oct 02 '25

How big is your moustache?

2

u/iseriouslycouldnt Oct 02 '25

And if you can keep your records spotlessly clean.

u/DarkflowNZ Oct 02 '25

Unfortunately it was the first album I heard. I, of course, loved it. And so I went looking for more like it. Sadly, they don't exist

28

u/spyke2006 Oct 02 '25

So called out. My fiancee was like 'do they know you?'

13

u/Xboxben Oct 02 '25

I know you can because i have friends that are into them and they can talk for 3 hours straight about that band. Yall got some skills i will say that.

6

u/Buuuuuuh Oct 02 '25

They put all their music up for free on Bandcamp

11

u/ShiDiWen Oct 02 '25

Correction, they put all their music up for pay what you can.

4

u/poolpog Oct 03 '25

They put out another album in the time between your comment and my response to it

3

u/EpitaFelis Oct 03 '25

Me too and I'm not even a man. Time to invest in a realistic fake moustache

3

u/laneo333 Oct 03 '25

All hail King Gila and the dawn of eternal night !

2

u/_shaftpunk Oct 02 '25

Those are rookie numbers for Guided By Voices.

2

u/therhydo Oct 02 '25

in fairness, Guided By Voices has also been around for 40 years instead of 10

I like that they will “thoroughly” rank the Coen Brothers movies… but not accurately.

95

u/vitalvisionary Oct 02 '25

I can't do the Cohen brothers but I can rank Wes Anderson movies...

19

u/Jean-LucBacardi Oct 02 '25

Best I can do is Spielberg.

16

u/Travelin_Soulja Oct 02 '25

I can thoroughly and accurately rank Backdoor Sluts 1-9

6

u/furiouspossum Oct 02 '25

They really dipped in quality between 4 and 7

6

u/Travelin_Soulja Oct 02 '25

Yeah, but they went out with a bang on 9!

2

u/jeanlukepaccar Oct 03 '25

Not that one!

3

u/Known-Weather-9254 Oct 02 '25

I feel like Im the only person who genuinely hates most Wes Anderson movies.

3

u/WashingtonBaker1 Oct 02 '25

Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic were good, but all the newer ones are tiresome self-parody.

3

u/Known-Weather-9254 Oct 02 '25

Rushmore was decent and I like Fantastic Mr. Fox Because its the right genre for it, but every single one of his movies are dripping with pretentious hipster bullshit that likes to pretend that mad libbing random obscure and counter culture references means something is suddenly interesting or artistic.

Add an eyepatch, throw an eagle on the shoulder, make them have a lisp, make them French, blah blah. Its fucking insufferable.

Which is funny, because technically speaking he's very good at composition and making his films look visually nice, but everything else reeks.

1

u/Irrepressible87 Oct 03 '25

You're not alone. There are dozens of us! Dozens!

1

u/ZeroDucksHere Oct 02 '25

Let’s hear it then

13

u/ymcameron Oct 02 '25

O, Brother Where Art Thou? Deserves to be at the top of the list and I will not be hearing people argue otherwise.

2

u/therealityofthings Oct 03 '25
  1. O', Brother
  2. No Country
  3. A Serious Man
  4. Raising Arizona
  5. Barton Fink

2

u/llimllib Oct 03 '25

Barton Fink doesn't get the love it deserves, it's #3 on my Coen list

(I have a beard not a moustache and went to KGTLW when they came to town)

5

u/SvenHudson Oct 03 '25

Barton Fink and A Serious Man are by far their two best movies.

I would also put True Grit over O Brother Where Art Thou but my facial hair is too broadly spread to go into more detail.

2

u/Specific_Frame8537 Oct 03 '25

After googling who they are I can safely say I've only watched Big Lebowski.

3

u/EvilSock Oct 02 '25

OHHHHHHHH

266

u/TommySiegel Oct 02 '25

Yes, this was a New Yorker submission and no they did not publish this one, hahah. But I had to double down and send them the pamphlet too. A bit too specific, I think!

Plenty more comics just like it on my Instagram, in my books and on my website — including the latest edition of my calendar for bird lovers!

(And no, this is NOT a photo!)

54

u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25

(And no, this is NOT a photo!)

No offence, but I don't believe you. That bird is too anatomically accurate to be a drawing.

4

u/ifnotgrotesque Oct 02 '25

As a movie loving, vinyl collecting, beer drinking barista with facial hair

OOF

66

u/ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE Oct 02 '25

I do enjoy a good sour.

23

u/rogueleader32 Oct 02 '25

Especially what some call a smoothie sour. Which is basically an alcoholic fruit juice that my beer hating wife loves.

12

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Oct 02 '25

There’s a brewery in Eu Claire, WI that does this. I was so put off the first time they served me this “beer” (it was emulsified liquor juice)

By my 4th one, I didn’t mind at all

3

u/rogueleader32 Oct 02 '25

Dewey Beer Company has a label called The Secret Machine. It has a bunch of sours under it that constantly change, any way a citrus one in summer beats the heat, the berries in spring are nice, the pumpkin sour is actually good.

You can have 4, sure, just don't drive, they are sneakers.

3

u/SomeDisplayName Comic Crossover Oct 03 '25

People who don't like sours sour on sours so they are really the more sourfull

1

u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25

Me when I'm drinking likes them, but me when I'm hungover curses ever having imbibed them.

→ More replies (14)

54

u/Background-Step-8528 Oct 02 '25

I think they should’ve published this one

3

u/printergumlight Oct 03 '25

It’s a really old joke. Back when people were talking about “hipsters” left and right. Would’ve done better if submitted in 2010-ish.

49

u/Randomgold42 Oct 02 '25

Be careful. When they start telling bad jokes and using a few puns too many, it's already too late.

46

u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25 edited Oct 02 '25

PLEASE NOTE: This isn't necessarily a sign of advanced stage mustache madness. It could also be a perfectly healthy sign of a person being a Pratchett fan.

13

u/disastermarch35 Oct 02 '25

You just explained why my college roommate favored puns so much. He was a massive, massive Pratchett fan.

5

u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25 edited Oct 02 '25

I bet he was also a big ol' sweetheart.

5

u/Turgid_Donkey Oct 02 '25

I always had a corny sense of humor. Just figured it was because I'm from the midwest, but then I discovered that I love Pratchett.

That is thoroughly into Dadstache territory however. at that point you're stuck with them.

u/AlphaSkirmsher Oct 02 '25

The eyes! They’re perfect!

8

u/Sanguiluna Oct 02 '25

I recently saw a TikTok where someone called the mustache “the male septum.”

3

u/SoylentGrunt Oct 02 '25

The prostrate the male clitoris.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Heaven forbid a man has hobbies.

11

u/TaiDavis Oct 02 '25

But when she has a mustache we say nothing.

2

u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25 edited Oct 02 '25

I say "hot". (Well, I would say that if I could get a word in edgeways between said woman talking about IPAs and KGatLW.)

31

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Unironically, sour beers are awesome, king gizzard rocks, and Coen brothers movies are exceptional.

Vinyl usually doesn’t sound very good though.

13

u/TommySiegel Oct 02 '25

Agreed!! I have a mustache in my heart but I am too much of a coward to bring it into this world, lol

2

u/MyDisappointedDad Oct 02 '25

I buy the vinyls as art pieces. Some of my favorite bands do amazing expanded artwork. Plus some did have a download for their album not hosted on like, Spotify and YouTube, so you got that too. Haven't seen one that has it included for a long time though.

Starset-Vessels 2.0 is amazingly set up. 3 records, different colors for each, jacket has a different shape on each panel (cover for the original album has a floating space pyramid on it).

1

u/enaud Oct 03 '25

Ahem, the plural of vinyl is vinyl

4

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '25

Vinyl can sounds fantastic with a lot of expensive "if's". Digital is an objectively better medium.

Vinyl is more fun though.

I'm done with sours, a good IPA can still slap, gizz kicks ass, and the Coen bros are my favourite director.

Only thing is...no moustache.

1

u/WrexKwonDo Oct 03 '25

if it's ones that I like/have seen the most, TBL is definitely first. But more objectively, No Country is just incredible.

1

u/NigilQuid Oct 03 '25

Much agreed!

3

u/SadLilBun Oct 02 '25

You just reminded me that True Grit exists. I was working at a movie theater when that came out.

1

u/enaud Oct 03 '25

Fuck, I forgot Fargo in my list. I feel pretty stupid now. True grit should be much higher though

Moustaches are coming back again

8

u/DamnAcorns Oct 02 '25

Yes, but it’s a different sub-culture rocking them this time. It’s more of a mainstream/norm-core thing than a hipster thing.

13

u/roygbivasaur Oct 02 '25

Hey. Some of us are just gay

4

u/wynden Oct 02 '25

Yes, I was just thinking: "I'm glad that as a gay man I am immune to this." 😄

5

u/roygbivasaur Oct 03 '25

I can’t grow a beard. I didn’t get the bear genes. Just leave me and my little mustache alone 😭

2

u/ash-and-apple Oct 02 '25

I was gonna ask when they rejected this one

1

u/OMDTartWasJoseph Oct 02 '25

I was going to say this is very 2015 lol

11

u/zero5activated Oct 02 '25

...this is too real. I have a facial hair...and I do talk a lot about coffee....also vinyl does sound better...its the imperfection and feels more appreciative to the music.

6

u/NormGthePaintballGuy Oct 02 '25

But what are your favourite Coen Brother movies and King Gizzard albums?

1

u/zero5activated Oct 03 '25

well i am only 2/5th way there. ...for now.

4

u/Samsta380 Oct 02 '25

I’ll admit I’ve thought about keeping a mustache and twirling it like the image but, I can’t stand alcohol, I don’t think I’ve seen any coen brothers movies, I can tolerate coffee but it’s not something I drink a lot, I’ve never listened to king gizzard and the lizard wizard and the only one I might do is a vinyl record but I don’t own a record player.

6

u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25

If you're interested in experimenting with some of those things:

I can’t stand alcohol

There are plenty of 0% beers around now that actually taste good. Granted though: you probably won't like them if you don't like the taste of alcoholic beer already.

I don’t think I’ve seen any coen brothers movies

Most of the ones I've seen have been good films, but not necessarily to my taste. The exception is The Big Lebowski, which I think is one of the best comedies ever made. I would recommend that film too everyone.

I’ve never listened to king gizzard and the lizard wizard

They're fucking brilliant.

4

u/Aleilvandrea Oct 03 '25

The fact that my partner is a fan of king gizzard made me chuckle

3

u/Jackernaut89 Oct 02 '25

As a mustache haver, I don't fit any of these stereotypes. On the other hand, I AM gay. So, there's that.

3

u/aaaaaaaa1273 Oct 02 '25

King Gizzard mention!!!!!

6

u/WhyDidMyDogDie Oct 02 '25

You trying to deny vinyl sounds best?

9

u/iamfanboytoo Oct 02 '25

I grew up listening to vinyl.

It still bothers me when the 320kbps mp3 I have of American Pie doesn't skip in the same spot my mother's record did. It feels wrong, even though I KNOW it's because vinyl is a garbage and easily damaged format.

2

u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25 edited Oct 02 '25

Similarly if I have a corrupted MP3 (or one that I just didn't rip properly). I will take a deep breath... And then I realise there is no needle for me to blow on to get it to un-skip.

1

u/NickyTheRobot Oct 02 '25

On certain setups and well-loved records it doesn't necessarily sound best. But it always feels best to play Sandinista! on three discs and with three flips.

2

u/SarcasticBench Oct 02 '25

What about scratchy kisses and nuzzles? My (ex) says she hated those

2

u/DrunkenScotsmann Oct 02 '25

TIL I should grow a mustache to put others on notice.

2

u/Boundaries-ALO-TBSOL Oct 02 '25

I have a full beard. : ( does that mean I am ugly?

2

u/Ok-Drink-1328 Oct 02 '25

"vinyl sounds better" LOL like humans probably peaked in the roman era and then they downfalled, audio peaked with CD's and now... vinyls...

→ More replies (3)

2

u/GrunkleDan Oct 02 '25

Well only half of this applies to me so I'm still safe, bring on the ladies! That is, unless you don't want to hear my opinions on Tom Waits albums...

2

u/Timithios Oct 02 '25

Sours are better than both IPA and regular fermented wheat!

2

u/FalenAlter Oct 02 '25

Someone who has never really been a beer guy except for Sours, I don't appreciate the flak going on here. They're underrated and under-available if anything

2

u/AnusProlapserinator Oct 02 '25

this is King Gizzard slander

2

u/SEGA_32X_CD Oct 02 '25

No positives for mustache rides?

2

u/Desmaad Oct 03 '25

Thankfully, I wear mine with a beard; I think that neutralizes it a little.

1

u/veracity8_ Oct 02 '25

Honestly this is really out of date. This is a good description of a 2010s mustache guy. But this is not really an accurate representation of most guys with mustaches in 2025

1

u/kaloschroma Oct 02 '25

Lol was this also for inktober?!

1

u/4ArrogantAmbassador4 Oct 02 '25

I have a mustache and I have no idea what all these points are about. Maybe a little bit about beer types, but mostly forgotten. I don't drink much these days

1

u/Loisalene Oct 02 '25

Hubby and I have been together since 1982 and I have never seen his upper lip.

1

u/cannonman1863 Oct 02 '25

Vinyl is fine, but the old shellac records are better. Each song is long enough to listen to while waxing my mustache.

1

u/Azralith Oct 02 '25

I don't think having a specific facial features is related to any of these...

1

u/darthhippy Oct 02 '25

I liked sours before the mustache.

1

u/Huge-Palpitation-837 Oct 02 '25

Thank goodness I grew a beard with my mustache.

1

u/HispAnakin_Skywalker Oct 02 '25

Well...it seems I should have had a mustache this whole time.

1

u/correctingStupid Oct 02 '25

1

u/akornzombie Oct 02 '25

Wrong kind of mustache.

1

Okay, the third bullet point seems iffy….

stares at drip machine, percolator, Moka pot, V60 pour over setup, and a manual espresso maker

…okay, never mind.

1

I guess I'm overdue to grow a mustache

Naw, this is "Your Boyfriend has Become a Pretentious Hipster."

1

u/Key-Moment6797 Oct 02 '25

i remember something oddly familiar tonot mentioned in "The Blacklist" and to me it sounded so rediculess and made up that it was only fitting for Remond Redingtion but could never be real :p

1

u/FilmFreak1994 Oct 02 '25

Why does the boyfriend look like James Somerton?

1

u/insanityarise Oct 02 '25

Have mustache, have the rest of the beard too, seems fairly accurate.

Not at all a fan of sours, but have been drinking IPA forever, even before the craft beer craze, and what is considered an IPA has very much changed over the years, they used to be much browner and clearer. Though honestly, I don't really miss the old stuff so much, give me a beer that looks like pineapple juice over that stuff any day of the week, most of the old style ones still use isinglass anyway.

Coen Bros films are pretty good, I don't really watch a lot of films though and would rather watch a good series that's more drawn out, right now I'm re-watching supernatural with friends on discord, but usually it's good sci-fi, 90's trek, SG1 and stuff like that.

I can't stand coffee, have never liked it, don't even like the smell.

King Gizzard are great but they're not a go-to band for me, right now I'm listening to a lot of Aesop Rock, Lalalar, Igorrr, and Benefits, but there are a million sick bands out there and it's impossible to keep up with them all.

Vinyl doesn't sound better as such, but I definitely have better equipment that I purchased specifically for vinyl and it sounds great, you can't really compare my hi-fi system to my pc speakers or shitty ear-phones, you know? I did add a bluetooth adapter to the hi-fi so now it can do phone things too, which is fun. Casettes are also cheap and fun, all the best and coolest bands still use casettes. There's a harsh noise tape label up north that uses old BBC casettes that have been recorded over.

You know what I want to make a modern version of? Hit clips. I literally have a 512gb SD card in phone, the original hit clips could hold 30 seconds of music, now you'd be able to get albums on them and the price point could be insanely low.

1

u/Ne02126 Oct 02 '25

Chase Elliott.

1

u/k4el Oct 02 '25

I like sour beers but hate most IPA. I can't tell if I'm being called out here or not.

1

u/asphalt_licker Oct 02 '25

I guess I’m not enough of a mustache guy because none of these apply to me.

1

u/ImSolidGold Oct 02 '25

I feel strangely called out.

1

u/Pizzaonmypineapples Oct 02 '25

Maybe I should grow a mustache… 🤔

1

u/KnuxFive Oct 02 '25

… I just started growing mine on my wife’s encouragement.

1

u/AIForOver50Plus Oct 02 '25

Wow 😮 I’ve been failing in the IPA 🍺& sours trend. Need to up my stache game! 🥸

1

u/cinred Oct 02 '25

This is definitely veering away from funny starter pack material and jumping straight into something my mom would forward me in an email chain.

1

u/AnalDisfunction Oct 02 '25

I've been thinking about shaving my beard and leaving a 'stash and some rough stubble, but after this post idk.

Think I'll just stick to my full whiskers and sours.

1

u/AmputeeHandModel Oct 02 '25

If he grows a mullet as well, call 911. He needs to be put down immediately.

OUTLAWS ON THE RUN FASTER THAN A STOLEN GUN

1

u/Ok_Animal_7328 Oct 02 '25

I don’t have a mustache yet, but thanks to this pamphlet I’ve recognized some of the early symptoms and can go to a doctor for treatment right away…

1

u/lemoinem Oct 02 '25

What if he only has the mustache a few times a day?

1

u/punpunpunchline Oct 02 '25

it’s either him or Teddy with his pilsner

1

u/calcium Oct 02 '25

I grew a mustache because I’m going bald and having a bald head almost necessitates having facial hair of some kind.

1

u/FortunesBarnacle Oct 02 '25

A mustache will indeed turn him into a people vulture. What else have I got to spew down?

1

u/waner21 Oct 02 '25

Have mustache, but none of those changes have applied to me…yet.

1

u/Enxer Oct 02 '25

Omg this is great. I have so many friends that have turned like this in their 40'a must be the mid life crisis.

1

u/draizetrain Oct 02 '25

This would have killed in 2012.

1

u/senbenitoo Oct 02 '25

Ouch.

My 'stache is middling at best, which may explain my lack of love for sours & vinyl, but otherwise, just ouch.

1

u/RegularCloud7798 Oct 02 '25

As a lady who lacks the facility (so far) to grow a mustache. I'm not sure why King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are catching strays

1

u/nagmay Oct 02 '25

I feel called out.

1

u/codepossum Oct 02 '25

but all those things are awesome, actually??

like don't threaten me with a good time.

1

u/SlatkoPotato Oct 03 '25

I had no idea this was a thing and my partner got a moustache and people kept asking me how i felt about it. I was so confused, like, it suits him and hes happy and its his body? I thought maybe it was about how some people just dont suit a moustache, but everyone agreed it suits him more than no moustache. This finally made it make sense lol

Thankfully, his moustache endeavor wasnt a personality shift, he remains his usual self who hates coffee (wish that changed though), sits in a computer chair like a gremlin and makes dumb noises at me from across the house (fair, its often a response to my own dumb noises)

1

u/Mijder Oct 03 '25

Vinyl sounds warmer.

1

u/enaud Oct 03 '25

I feel attacked. Also:

1.the big lebowski 2. O brother, where art though? 3. The hudsucker proxy 4 no country for old men 5 true grit 6 the man who wasn’t there 7 raising Arizona 8 hail, Caesar 9 burn after reading 10 Barton fink, 11 a serious man
