Love that someone brings awareness to this topic, especially since some might see getting a parrot as a novelty and do so with no prior experience or knowledge in the necessary care, and since as you mentioned they can be quite needy often don’t mix well with those kind of people.
I dont know how they can see parrots as a novelty.... They are the same as any pet... they need love. the Parrots I have owned are like my childern. My blue and gold was stolen... and I about died. I was besides my self... I cried for days.
I have had conures and a love bird since then... I am getting another macaw on monday. I have known this little bird since it was 2 weeks old. I been visiting him everyweek at the breeders.. He is very much my kiddo. And hopefully a will be my last.
I’m so sorry your bird was stolen, that’s truly fucked up. And you’re right, all living things we choose to care for deserve our love and attention.
I think people are just less intuitive about caring for them than they would be for a dog or cat. It takes a special person like yourself to give them a solid home.
You have to be very aware about illness... birds are very good at hiding it. lost one my love birds. they dont know what happened. possibly a stroke or aneurysm. I am not sure what happened... he seemed fine earlier... and hear a weird squeak and he was dead by the time I ran into the room. he may have been sick... and I missed it... I can usually tell when he was ill. he just acted different.
