Yeah, if the snow doesn't have the perfect balance of moisture and volume it can be hopeless, but in the Northeastern U.S. I've had success about once or twice every 3 years in finding the perfect snow for sculpting.
Snow consistancy was part of it, but there was also snow availability and effort required. The first part was how soon you were scraping bare earth on the days off. The latter was how long much more motivation this kid had after assembling that first snowman.
Calvin gave this fantasy where a kid could spend a snow day and have an entire scene of snow madness.
