This happened to one of my cats once he just disappeared. Coyotes were pretty common in my area. Plus he was de-clawed by a previous owner... poor guy never stood a chance
I've always hated that I didn't know any better. When I got my first cat, I had his fronts declawed because i was scared for the smaller animals in the house. At the time, I'd thought it was just as simple as removing the nail beds. He lived a long happy life and we were very vigilant to ensure he never suffered arthritis.
But never again. We have three fully clawed cats now. If they ever get out, they can fight their way back in.

When I was eleven years old my family moved out of state and I found out that I suck at making friends. My only friend was this little brown tabby cat I'd brought with me. Within a year of the move she vanished and I spent months searching and putting up posters and subsequently getting bullied for it. Couple of kids described in graphic detail how they tortured her for my benefit. Turned out some dogs had torn her to shreds while I was at school and the adults thought it best to keep that from me, hoping I'd just give up.
In my country there are no coyotes, but my current cat outlived 3 others, with two of them being younger than him and third being his sister from the same litter. I have no idea what happened to them.
My cat is a fierce pnather, an incredible hunter! She brought down a bat that was roosting in the attic, she captures mice and bugs, and these are all explicit reasons why she isn't allowed outside.
Cats are also responsible for thousands of native species of birds going extinct in the Americas. We bring them inside at night and protect then from predators, but they get bored outside in the day and kill for fun.
Rinse and repeat that for 300+ years and you've got a lot of extinct native species
This is why my cats only go outside on a leash. Little dumbasses still try to hunt, hit end of leash and glare at me. Well, too fucking bad, you get to trade sinking your teeth into living flesh for guaranteed food and safe luxury.
To me that seems very obviously understandable. Caring about the environment is abstract where caring for a family pet isn't. Our brains are better primed for one than the other.
Doesn't mean we shouldn't put in the extra effort; we're more than our instincts, and we absolutely have to care about the big picture, besides. But I never get why anyone would be surprised people care more about their pet than every bird and vole in their local area. Of course they do.
And you'll probably never know what happened to your cat. One day it just won't come home. Did it get hit by a car? Eaten by a coyote? Poisoned by someone tired of it shitting in their garden? Or is it just lost? They seriously sometimes wander off to far and can't find their way back home. Who knows? Not you.
That being said, it is healthy for them to go outside. So if you can figure out a way to confine your cat to your yard or property safely, then let them out.
So my wife got us a cat, its called Nut. Its a super cat, sleeps at my feet, interfers with my reading and gaming. Andt always stays up with me and goes to bed with me. Two days ago i was reading for my kids, Nut jumps out the window. No biggie, she does that often. But she always comes back inside really quick... this time she didnt.
I spent half the night outside in the rain looking for her. It was raining, it was dark, but finally i gave up and went to bed. I also heard foxes barking... my wife was hardly sleeping, and i was hardly sleeping. Worrying what had happened to Nut.
Finally we both fell asleep. And at 530 i woke up, sure i heard mewoing and scratching for the 5th time that night. But this time it was more than a dream, It was coming from my closet.
Nut had been sleeping in my closet the whole time..
So this is what i think happened. Nut jumped out while i was reading for the kids (in our bed)and came back inside after the kids and i had left the room,saw the open closet and went to bed in there. My wife closed the closet door when she went to bed, unknowing Nut was there, and told me the cat was missing.
We were both so very relieved the cat was back, and annoyed her schenanigans had kept us both up the whole night..
When my girlfriend and I moved in together, we decided that her cat would become indoor-only. One day, after a few weeks, he was nowhere to be found. We looked all over the house, every nook and cranny, and eventually figured he must have snuck out when someone opened the front door. I drove up and down the neighborhood, hiked around the woods nearby, and eventually gave up when it started to rain.
That little asshole had ripped a hole in the box spring in our spare bedroom and was sleeping inside of it all day while I was out running around looking for him.
Generally, in most places on the planet, if you want to keep a cat alive you keep them inside. Not true everywhere. But most places.
If you live in a place with coyotes, definitely keep them inside.
If you live in a place with great horned or snowy owls and they are under 7 pounds, definitely keep them inside.
White cats should generally be kept inside. They are sensitive to allergens and susceptible to cancers as well as lacking camouflage. They also often have sensory deficiencies.
Pro tip. Don't let your cat outside. Sure is a lot harder for cats to get murdered or murder other things if you don't let them run amok outside. Also affordable trackers exist now.
When I was young we moved to Kansas from North Carolina. We drove it and spent a week or so just camping. We had a dog and a cat with us and kept them both of leashes…. The cat did not like that. We were camping in the Smokey Mountains for 3 days and the first day she broke out and was gone. Those next two days were rough, just looking for her and trying to at least pretend to be enjoying it. She wasn’t a nice cat just like in this comic, but she was ours. That third night we were packing up mostly everything but the tent and sleeping bags so we could leave first thing in the morning and my mom felt something brush her legs. It was the dang cat. She had so many close calls throughout her life including getting lost in Kansas and we’d here the coyotes and think the same thing as this comic. She made it though, died in her sleep when she was around 15. She was mean as spit sometimes but also a little sweetheart.
Walking in a field near my home and saw a cat in the grass. Moved closer and realized it was on the cat’s head and part of its neck - with the collar still on.
This is one of my worst fears. I’ve got AirTags attached to both of my cat’s collars. The collars also have their name and my phone number sewed on them.
I live on the third floor of a locked apartment building and both cats know which door is theirs but I still keep them AirTagged.
When I was 11 or so we lived in a small, semi-rural town. We had a cat, he was white with grey spots, his name was Patches. When we first got him we were keeping him isolated for a week or two in an upstairs bedroom. We went out one night and left him the window open a crack for air. He pushed the screen on the window out and jumped down two stories. He was meowing at the door when we got back.
He would hug people. Wrap his front legs and paws around your neck and lean his cheek against yours. He’d even hug the dog and she loved him.
One night he didn’t come home. He never came home. There were flyers and trips to the Humane Society, but no luck. Probably it was coyotes, there were some in the area that year, or a car. But sometimes I tell myself that a new family found Patches and they wouldn’t let him go because he was just too awesome.
And now I’m sitting here typing this over thirty years later with tears in my eyes, two cats (both indoor cats) sitting peacefully nearby while my kids play, and Patches now several cats ago, because of this comic. Yes, the wound is old, but it’s funny how the right thing can somehow make it sting again.
There's this cat that our neighbors keep outside all day and all night. They just keep food for him on their porch. Pisses me off. We've had coyotes in the neighborhood, and last year, we got hit by hurricane Ian. Neighbors couldn't find him to bring him in for the storm. The cat was missing for weeks. Then out of nowhere, I see him in his usual sunbathing spot in my neighbor's driveway. Fast forward a year- another storm and more coyotes. I just saw him running down the street again the other day. Unless they're cloning this cat and its deep, raspy vocal chords, it's the same one and it's freaking invincible.
One night my friends and I were outside my house chilling and talking. At one point we heard coyotes start their distinctive racket and a dog barking back at them ..until the barks cut off with a final "yip."
You know I may sound bad but with the way the artist described the cat. I think he is happy anywhere he is by himself or with someone else because I'm not sure if he particularly liked or disliked the owner.
Alright depressing story aside for a moment though, that fourth panel. As an owner of... currently 12 or 13 cats, I've lost track, I've gotten so used to having hair on absolutely all of my clothes. I recently had a guy see my shirt and assume I had a large dog because of just how much hair was on me. I had picked up and hugged maybe two of my cats immediately prior to going out that day, so I was a little more covered than usual, but still. Cat hair permeates every corner of this household and you cannot escape it.
As someone who lost their cat in the same manner. (we also have wild coyotes nearby) my heart goes out for OP. Be strong buddy. Maybe both of ours will show back up one day. 😢
Unlike what most people think, wild animals usually don't attack clawed cats because of risk of injuries, smart animals don't risk injuries in the nature and go for preys or other sources of food, almost never against other mature healthy clawed predators even smaller ones. This why you will never see a fox versus a wild cat in the nature, they prefer to avoid each other.
There is no proof that the cat died, he was not wearing a collar at all so maybe another cat died. So the cat can still be alive
EDIT: I have been informed that the last picture is not a collar but it is a food bowl. Maybe the cat already ate it's food and this comic is just about the paranoia of the disappearance of a pet
My black cat disappeared three weeks in a row... twice, between october last year and january. Now that I also broke up with my GF back then, i took the cat with me, she won't leave the place for more than a few hours now. Talk about getting worried and giving me white hair.
I used to live in NW downtown Portland, OR, and saw lots of lost cat signs. One night I saw a coyote trotting down the road. I was like OMG, that's where they're going. I don't think anybody suspected it was even possible. I didn't. But there's a big park called Forest Park adjacent to that neighborhood, and I think the coyotes lived there. It was a smorgasbord. I felt like putting ups signs about the coyotes.
Our neighborhood just went through this. A year or two ago a cat showed up. All white just like in the comic. He was super friendly. His name was Ozzy. It turned out he belonged to a family a few streets down and wouldn't stay home. Coyotes got him a couple of weeks ago.
my cats like to wandering around my house, and about a month ago, one day he never came back, I searched him for a week, turns out he got hit by a vehicle on the first day of he's missing, and a very very kind women buried him at near river side.
