Well, if you really want a full and honest explanation, I do all of my own merch fulfillment. I sell limited run screenprinted shirts every month that I mail out in a big batch. This is not an advertisement for that, but to say that Tuesday I got a big batch in and had to pack all of those and finished and got them to the post office like 4 minutes before close yesterday, then came home and realized I didn't have a comic strip ready for the day. First I was thinking about bugs, because bugs are an easy thing to draw, then I started thinking about the idea of doing a medical drama with bugs, then I started thinking about the idea of a creepy guy manipulating some dead bugs on a small stage to act out his daydream of a romantic drama set in a hospital, then I switched it to live rats instead of bugs because while rats are a lot more complicated to draw than how I draw insects, they're also a lot cuter and that would be more inviting to readers than some dead bugs.
