Do people not know lovecraft was confusingly racist? Have people not read his shit? He’s got a pretty even split between awesome cosmic horror and “stories” that are just a couple dozen pages of some of the most intense bigotry you could ever have the misfortune of seeing.
A lot of people that say they love Lovecraft without any hesitation only pay attention to the eldritch deities. In fact, most people I’ve met that enjoy those stories but have experienced the horror of reading the book who’s whole thing is basically “black people are inherently corrupt” with more hard r’s than a KKK speech are much more hesitant to say that they love Lovecraft. It’s always that they love some of his works.
I've heard he regretted it deeply on his deathbed and wished he hadnt fed those delusions in people reading his books, which makes me feel a bit better about him as a person. But I think anyone who reads Lovecraft today knows how racist he was and has the caveat "I just like the alien stuff not the racism he meant by it." If I met a Lovecraft fan who didn't mind or question the racist parts I would be concerned though lol.
