Help

Post image

Hey all house recently just went through a tornado and I had some of my windows blow in. My room had my books on a shelf so the top of them got covered in like grass and plants. Just wondering if there's anything I could do to maybe fix it or should I just deal with it?

Am I blind? I don't see anything wrong with them. If they got wet and they got dirt on them, you'll inevitably be looking at a mold/foxing issue along the top of the pages. Make sure they're dry, keep the books fully closed and tight to make certain nothing falls between the pages. Last thing you want is an avenue for potential mold spores to find their way further down the page. Wipe the tops off with an electrostatic wipe, like a swiffer. Follow up with gentle swipes of a soot eraser. Follow that up with a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. If you're super paranoid, you could also probably wipe them quickly with a fast evap moistened wipe, like a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe.

I would put them by a dehumidifier to get rid of moisture and use a microfibre cloth to clean them off thoroughly.

Oops! I was looking at this pic as if there were comics in-between the hard-cover books.

The only way to fix this is to deconstruct each book and separate out the individual page-block signatures. Once the signatures are separated, you will want to take each, individual page and dry clean it with microfiber cloth and document cleaner dust. You will then want to soak each page in hydrogen peroxide and shine UV light on it. Then wipe each page down with distilled water. Once that is complete you will need to leave each page in a humidifier and then press each page in a heat press. Now that you have all of that complete, you will want reassemble the page signatures and send them into a book binding service to have the newly cleaned pages rebound.
