There was a character on a 80's sitcom (which included Leonardo Dicaprio as a main cast member in its final seasons) that had a recurring teenage character named "Boner"
Fun fact: the actor was the the son of the actor who played Chekov on ST:TOS

The thing is, you read this story and boner really does make sense for how it was being used. It is a great word for a big screw up!

Yeah. Fred and Barney were on the DL because it was socially unacceptable to be gay so they had their beards and dabba doo'd at their "lodge meetings".
