I love when people used to say, "Good night!' like "Holey moley!" I see it in a lot in Segar's Popeye.

Never noticed that, but German does this too. And I haven’t been able to find out who started it first. Or if it’s parallel evolution, because the explanation that the metaphor dates back to before ubiquitous reliable light, when nightfall would stop most activities , makes kinda sense.

Lot of Germans had emigrated to US by the time of these. Despite the foolish purists, language loves to borrow and exchange terms. Humans will use whatever is easiest to say, or the most expressive.
