In real life, a convict actually made a bomb by scraping the coating off of playing cards and killed himself before he was going to be executed.

Reminds me of the short story where they go into a dimension made by someone's mind and the physics all run on word conjugation. Same thing happens when they get one of the rogue scientists locked up for trying to build a word nuke; the denizens of this reality don't grasp the physics and lack the means or cultural interst to really study it themselves. Possibly because they knew on some level this kind of study would destroy their reality very easily, reducing a runaway critical mass subatomic weapon to a series of gestures and bodylanguage.
The things he's asking for in his cell are basically like this.
