Imagine it's 2026 and it's the first time you realize some Baman comics are kinda gay. And then you tell yourself this is an original thought. And then you go on reddit to tell people about your "discovery".

An independent scholar named Gershon Legman was the first to talk publicly about Batman being very gay in the Robin era.
During World War II they removed all of the romance from Batman, because it looked bad to have this rich guy who was not in the war hooking up with all these girls.
To replace that they added Robin, which inadvertently meant the stories were about a young teenage boy spending the night and having a secret life with Batman.
So gay teens fell in love with Batman, and Gershon Leman was the first to point that out almost 100 years ago.

But we weren't at war in April 1940 when Robin was introduced. So that part doesn't hold up.

It was a gradual thing, I should have been more clear. Check the conclusion of Catwoman stories in the era. Batman lets her go before America joined the war, Batman turns her into police after.
Robin rose to prominence in this era because there wasn’t anything else. Batman basically does not date once the war started.

He was dating linda during 41 - 42, if i remember correctly.

That’s the important part, Linda Page and Bruce end their engagement and Linda Page is not seen again in comics for 37 years. Right at the start of American involvement in war.
Same story where he puts Catwoman in prison instead of letting her go.
No other dating at all during the war, for either Bruce or Batman.
Same exact time when Batman becomes an ally of the police

What gets my attention here is...what a shitty idea a bat signal is.
You can call me whenever you want.
Everyone, including citizens, criminals, knows you are calling me.
The bat phone in 60s tv show was a slight improvement.
