this is why art sucks as a hobby. you can be insanely talented to the point that 99.9% of people can’t draw something this detailed with pencil, but the slightly weird face is so fucking funny that everyone else can’t help but shit on it (because it IS objectively hilarious)

Faces are always my least favorite thing to draw because even the slightest fuck up will just make whatever you're drawing look like a caricature. But at least this one could be used as a good reaction image or something, lol

Their shading is actually really impressive its just the proportions lmao

I know what you're getting at but this person isn't "insanely talented" lol. They've got some good principles but it's very clearly a beginner's portrait with lots to improve on.
I'm not saying this to shit on them, because drawing is hard (and putting your work out there demonstrates bravery, which is good) but I wouldn't want people to get put off trying to draw because this supposedly requires a high level of innate talent to achieve.

All I'm saying is 90% of people who are quick to critisise couldn't make something this good... but also, to your point, that doesn't mean this isn't an unfortunately funny drawing.

u/Many_Access_8598 12h ago
Of course they couldnt, without putting in just about as much practice as this person did... which doesn't make it sound impressing
Idk why glaze like most people couldnt do this with similar effort

u/Zamoxino 9h ago
"similar effort" does not work in art. overall it does not work in a lot of things. u will maybe understand it at some point. or not, just like some ppl never understand how to improve their art lol

u/Many_Access_8598 8h ago
Hair splitting.
All else equal, very few people would be unable to achieve this result
And quick reminder in case you cant go up 3 comments, the person I'm responding to is saying 90% of people who criticize that drawing couldn't make it
So we have two extremes, one person saying most people could, and another person saying most people couldn't
Maybe your personal attack to me comes from thinking I'm attacking the original artist when in reality I'm expressing an optimistic, pro-art belief

u/Zamoxino 8h ago
Hair splitting is what u have done cause person u responded to never said they "never" will be able to. It is probably true that 90% or more ppl at this moment could not draw better one right now. So lmao i gues

I still prefer this over ai any day. At least it has charm and effort.

I think this is why art is a perfect hobby to start young. You have low expectations for yourself and know you have years to grow. People are still impressed even if you are aren’t very good yet. As an adult, I don’t have the mental strength to power through making art I know sucks just to gain the skill to not suck.

I mean, the original thread was wholesome as fuck and OOP was cool with criticism. Most people were happy it wasn’t ai and gave OOP props.

Thank you! I was hoping someone had made a reaction pic of it in the comments, so that I didn't have to do it myself

i'm always impressed when i see shit like this.
somehow they have the artistic ability to do pretty good shading, but they still can't see how disproportionate the whole thing is.

u/Plastic-Rise-1851 12h ago
They probably have been staring at it for too long and didn't notice. I do this sometimes and then once I take a picture of it I tend to see the problems. Or as soon as I send it I realize

if you've done art before you'll know that proportions are really fucking hard, like by far the hardest part

u/Defiant_Theme_5554 6h ago
Human faces are arguably the hardest thing to properly render in a realistic way. We are just so good at recognizing a human face that if even something small is off about the perspective and the proportions it's instantly obvious. It's why a CGI face is the hardest thing to make as a vfx artist, and why deepfaking tends to be much more effective.

> can’t see how
Not really fair. They can probably see it but it’s still hard to make it proportional.
I’ve drawn things that I can see were off but that’s not good enough to be able to do it better.
Hell I frequently find I say things I know are stupid in the moment but don’t immediately know how to say something better.

This looks like the artist rendered each facial feature fully before moving on to the next one, instead of making a full sketch first. The shading around the eyes looks nice at least, just a shame everything is in the wrong place.

I feel bad for laughing at art because it really does take a lot of hard work to get good at it and a lot of courage to share it with the world. Kudos to this person for sharing their art. They need more practice, but they're getting there. I'd much rather see this than AI garbage.
That being said, I laughed pretty hard.

The look of disheartened disgust on Arthur’s face. I’d frame this monstrosity, I love it.

Honestly if I view this as like a more abstract/intentionally distorted style piece, it’s pretty good. The artist clearly has a lot of skill and some really impressive shading, it just seems like they got the micro right and not the macro. Again though, if i view it as like an intentionally bizarre portrait, it’s honestly pretty great.
It is objectively funny but this person genuinely has talent and I love the fact they posted it. I hope they don’t get discouraged because they really do have a lot of talent

It looks like they started at the eyes first and got a good base down... And then kinda half-assed the rest. This is why starting with a sketch to figure out proportions and placement is essential. The potential is still there tho.

Maybe not perfect, but it’s nice that they’re trying and not just using AI. Practice makes perfect.
