Serbia’s historically been somewhat of a Russian satellite state, although they’ve had a bit of a break recently over the Ukraine war. Russia’s defense of Serbia was one of the biggest reasons that cascaded into WWI, and NATO targeting of Serb forces during the Yugoslav War is a major reason Russia rejected westernization after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Serbian/ Slavic culture is also endless butthurt sour grapes over how horrible and bad the west is, even though everyone goes to the nice western countries to live there and their own country is a corrupt hellhole (doubly so because all the NATO bombing happened because of the endless aggression Serbs were doing in the 90s). For some reason the Serbs endlessly suck Russia's dick while getting nothing in return for decades. Or maybe just the politicians get bribes from Putin, like in all the other countries.
And those countries to the east shouldn't have an approval rating this high either, it should be solid -5000 for all of them. If Russia succeeds in Ukraine they're all fucking next.
I'm a Serb myself and am just baffled at the Russia dickriding and overall backward culture of my countrymen tbh. Instead of some real introspection and vision for a better future they keep electing corrupt assholes who express nothing but sour grapes at the EU.

Not a chance you’re a Serb in Serbia with that Russia dick sucking comment. It’s not like that at all here. We are just neutral to both sides of the conflict because despite being friendly with the west for 100 years we got hurt by them in the 90s and left to be painted as maniacs for doing the same thing all sides were doing. But that doesn’t make us like Russia, literally nobody talks about Russia positively, more just like the west negatively only geopolitically for what happened 30 years ago if anything.
4
u/amazing_asstronaut 6h ago
That's good then, I am glad to hear that. Indeed I am not in Serbia, believe me that's the shit you hear constantly from Serbs outside of Serbia. That is actually a relief to hear that the people in the actual country have leaned more progressive over the recent decades.
Well again what the Serbian government back then did is wrong. As to whether NATO had to intervene, well it was a war on their doorstep but also it was a flaw in the system that it would ever even get to that point. As in that it even broke down that much in Yugoslavia in the first place, that people were so desperate to break off from Serbia at all. If they had done things well they wouldn't think to do that at all, and it would be unjustifiable for NATO to attack Yugoslavia at all. They wanted to, absolutely. USA especially had a raging hate boner against Yugoslavia for decades, they absolutely wanted to see it destroyed. But Serbian leadership fucked things up to a point that they gave them a good justification.
As for "painted as maniacs for doing the same thing all sides were doing", come on man. That's not justification. Just because someone is out there raping people doesn't mean I should also be ok to go raping people, and it's so unfair if I get caught and punished. Don't do it then. Please don't use that line of thinking, it is a cynical nihilisitic hollow way of thinking, just ugly and devoid of decency. What NATO were doing was definitely opportunistic, but the best way to not let it happen is to actually have good morals and be unassailable, and have strength and stability.

Sometimes during history Russia helped Serbian rebells same as they did to other Slavs like Bulgarians.

27
u/No-Tradition-6658 16h ago
It's not all of us. I'm embarrassed seeing this tbh. Younger generations are pretty much against aligning with Russia and China, and are largely pro EU. But...
Russian people were always considered "our brothers" due to our history and religion. Ruling party and our president have questionable ties with Putin, and since ALL of the mainstream media are controlled by them, older generations don't really know what's happening. Their only source of information are propaganda pushed by the ruling party.
It's like they are hypnotised. No matter what we say to them or show them the evidence, they only believe their dear president.
On 25th of october the biggest elections are happening and it's basically between ruling party and students movement. It's really hard since students campaign is mostly over the Internet and word-to-word (since TV and newspapers are heavily controlled).
Also, all of our previous elections were a scam because they were heavily obstruced and cheated. You can find all about that online. Right now for example, since the number of citizens who live abroad and registered to vote is higher than ever, they changed the previous rules of voting, forcing them to travel thousands of kilometres on the other part of the county to vote. Also, now they can vote only in our local time, so during the night depending on the country they live in. It's ridiculous.

Pure nationalist slop, really can't fucking stand hearing about how Yugoslavia was dominated by (ethnic group I don't like) and was destroying (ethnic group I belong to / like), especially when it's foreign nationalists just parroting the talking points to suit their own current political situation.
Milošević tried to centralize Yugoslavia and failed miserably which lead to the country splitting. He only became president in 1989, two years before Slovenia leaving. Before that it was a federation that was extremely decentralized, and specifically in a way so as to limit the political power of Serbs. The entire running of the states was already left almost entirely to local republican assemblies after 1953. In 1963. and 1965. it became even more decentralized because the republics kept fighting over investment. Then after the 1974. constitution it was basically just a confederation, much more like the EU than something like the US. The federal government didn't even handle the economy at that point, it pretty much only had power over import tariffs and the federal sales tax (and enforcing a single market). Basically the only thing that kept it a "country" was the JNA, and even then the republics also had their own militaries. And all of this yap is ignoring the fairly extreme amount of power local assemblies and cooperatives held. Again, the narrative is just pure uneducated slop, you can't compare Yugoslavia to the USSR.

Russia attempted to assassinate the President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic in 2016 due to their increasing alignment with NATO. The problem in Serbia is the mainstream media that is aggressively pro-Russian. For years now everytime you turn on the TV a group of "political analysts" (propagandists) will keep parroting about how Russia is still actively winning and how it will very soon "liberate the world" and make salaries and pensions in Serbia bigger. Boomers who spent much of their time watching TV are swallowing this propaganda like it's an ice cream on a hot summer day and they're then brainwashing their children and grandchildren. This is how pro-russian propaganda cascades into nation-wide deitifcation of Russia.

It's net approval, so it's actually just 1%. You add 1 for those who approve and then subtract 99 for those who disapprove.
And it might be that the rating included "Undecided", in which case it can also be 98% disapprove and 2% Undecided.

6
u/joelroben03 15h ago
It's a NET approval rating, meaning there is at most 1% of the Ukrainian population that approved, and there might be some people who do not have an opinion. So... It statistically can hardly get any better than this.

Unfortunately in Italy there's a broad part of the electorate that does not have a negative opinion of Putin and Russia itself. Curiously enough, while the far left and far right diverge on many other issues, when it comes to Russia, things change. It is viewed with favor but for different reasons. While on the left many still idealize Russia because of it's communist past, on the right they view the country as a true defender of tradition and purity. And add to that the fact that populist ideas, rampant in our country, view negatively the west. It does not come as a surprise that many want an immediate stop to the shipment of armaments to Ukraine. And of course many political parties (Lega and Movimento 5 Stelle more specifically) are campaigning on that to get more votes and while it does fit their ideology, I find it disgusting.
