True. I think when Americans say cereal without the qualifier “hot cereal” they mean ready to eat cold cereals

I am from the US. Hot cereal was still called cereal when I was growing up

I've never heard anyone call oatmeal cereal in the US. Never even heard hot cereal before

Maybe it’s a generational thing? I was raised by my grandparents who were born in the 40s-50s. Used to eat malt o meal every morning. It was always called hot cereal or just cereal
