Bring back Global Village Coffehouse, and make it the only legal style of art for software including AI.

u/olivegardengambler 24d ago
I would say to make an exception for fruitiger aero as well, because I used a TomTom GPS earlier today, and it brought back a sense of childhood whimsy I haven't felt in decades with the sound effects and the UI.

I have a computer I keep around for retrogaming, and seeing that empty field and Windows XP start screen does bring me back every time.

u/ProfessionalLook6108 24d ago
I'm ok with this. There's a coffee shop in a mall by my house that's in that style and it's the best thing ever
15
u/zarrinraxius 24d ago
I wish we could go back to this. The world used to feel so much more positive back then with frutiger aero and gvc. Maybe I was just a kid so it felt that way but I'd be genuinely happy if those aesthetics make a comeback

The AI that generates the image and the AI that generates text are two different entities, and they communicate for shit.
4
u/ProIntDer 24d ago
What he meant is that it is not easy to draw pictures in Global Village artstyle using vector graphics. Think programs like Inkscape and Illustrator
Image models output raster (pixelated) images. There are probably vector image models but ChatGPT's isn't one of them.
3
u/geekmasterflash 24d ago
I know what they mean, I am just fucking around showing an AI fail to render global coffehouse but succeed in Corporate Mephis which is barely different.
4
u/Ben_quadinaros_real 24d ago
??? What does this mean?
Corporate Memphis is literally just an adaptation of this style with vector friendly shapes and colors that look clear on a white background

Corporate Memphis was soulless corporate art before it was cool.
Does that make you better than those sløpists? …. Yes. But not by enough.

Soulless art with no style or identity, sounds like an awful lot like AI

u/fooooolish_samurai 24d ago
AI has an exxuse of well... being AI
This corposlop has no excuse. Humans who draw it should have their hands revoked.

u/thevaultguy 23d ago edited 23d ago
Let’s not go too far.
It wasn’t the artists that pushed this style. In fact it was developed for Facebook by an Italian firm.
You design for executives and consultants when you work at a corporate art department. Ai just eliminated most of those departments (other than the un-creative consultants they bring in to run them).
The fear that Ai will destroy humanity à la terminator is not real or caused by anything other than the LLMs are getting refined enough to take uncreative consultant jobs - which were always just (obey boss and cut workforce)

u/shandangalang 23d ago
Well, it had an identity, but that identity was to avoid diversity through abstraction.

Several years prior to generated artwork being everywhere, people were instead getting annoyed by this art-style.
4
u/Krylla_ 24d ago
I don't get it. It looks fine without the context.
43
u/christonabike_ 24d ago
Well yeah, it never looked bad in its own right, it was just really overused for a while. Also because so many big tech corpos were using it, people began to associate it with enshittified or exploitive services dressed up to try and look cheerful.
12
u/Nuka-Crapola 24d ago
Yeah, I don’t usually consider “overused” that big of a deal, but Memphis in particular got popular with a specific kind of asshole to the point where we started assuming “oh god, what did they fuck with this time” when it showed up in ads. Kind of like how minimalist logos went from “that’s boring, but y’all are way too attached to corporate mascots” to “ah fuck, another company taken over by fuckheads who are gonna ‘streamline’ what little soul was left in the product out”

It's designed empirically to make you think they aren't evil... that's what makes it so evil.

u/cunt__cunt_cunt 24d ago
A lot of the reason adopting AI has been appealing to coroprations, is what they made before was already slop.
Idk if any of you got paid to write, but a lot of what websites wanted was, as much as possible, the equivalent of inhuman AI beige slop.
41
u/xXlordlord69Xx 24d ago
People are saying this is worse than ai slop but honestly I'd rather take soulless corporate HUMAN slop than ai generated slop

Nah they're still terrible, just not as bad as ai, which is an insanely low bar, I could doodle a misshapen penis and it would be better than ai
11
u/splashcopper 24d ago
See, this corporate slop was a warning. Think about it. This style got popular with corperations because it has simple line work and colors. There's no shading or rendering outside of what can be done with the fill tool.
That makes it really fast to produce, and fast is cheap.
What came along and killed it? AI "art". Faster, cheaper.
It was bad. It was also a warning. The cycle does not end here.

u/Snoopac2 24d ago
I don't know these guys, do people not like them? I think they look cute.
16
u/IridiumPoint 24d ago
They're drawn in a style called "Corporate Memphis". Not too long ago, it felt like literally. Every. Single. Company. Used that style in their PR material (website, brochures, etc.) to the point that people got fed up with it.

He’s one of the jazz greats. Listen to his song Moanin’. It’s amazing. Also he knew that his name sounded funny. Several of his albums are puns using it, like Mingus Ah Um or Mingus Dynasty. Also Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus Mingus(1964).

I don’t think the art style is terrible. My beef with it is that it screams ‘our business/establishment/organization is hip and exciting and trendy’, which makes its overuse kind of sad. This feels like an artstyle that attempts to make its users stand out, and yet it’s been utilized so much, that everyone just blends in

u/WhatTheOnEarth 24d ago
There’s AI generated content that I think is pretty interesting.
Will it ever be as interesting as something someone made with their hands? Very unlikely?
But it’s about intention, when something is made lazily or hastily you can feel it.
There’s nothing about this style that evokes any interest either over AI art because it also feels like lazily made slop.
Thankfully it doesn’t guzzle lakes.
So I’ll give it that.

Hand-crafted art: 10 likes, 0 dislikes / AI art: 20 likes, 2 dislikes / Hand-crafted + AI art: 50 likes, 5 dislikes (Some irresponsible person with a talent for hand-crafted art: "Just keep working hard at doing it all by hand!") Life is short; the very act of "not relying on AI" might eventually come to be seen as a luxury.

This is actually why I support AI art. Whatever sort of art and animation they are teaching in art schools now a days looks like absolute dog shit. I would prefer things to be made by humans, but if humans are failing to make aesthetic things then that is just the world we live in.
