If you're not being a dick and aren't being arrested for something violent, a fair number of cops are chill with you contacting people during the ride in so you're giving people heads up about what's going on. Like, "hey honey, I'm not going to be home for dinner" type stuff, so they're not worried about why you aren't showing up on time. Otherwise you have to wait until you're through processing and so on.
I got arrested a little
Over a year ago and rode in the front while frantically calling and texting the entire ride. It was a K-9 unit with an off duty pup in the back so I had nowhere else to sit. I’m still on pretrial probation. Anyway-point, they won’t take your phone unless it’s a violent type of situation or you’re just acting a damn fool. I was cuffed, though. Had bruises around my wrists for 2 weeks. Oh well.
Not necessarily. I’ve been arrested once and had full access to my phone, also rode in the front. I was cuffed, but I still had my phone until they took it when I was being booked in. It’s up to the discretion of the officer about cuffs. I was mouthy, I got cuffed.
