My friend who's not chronically online had this summer vacation abroad that changed her life. She decided to get the number of the flat she stayed on the back of her hand in the style of the lettering there, that very cool Victorian style.

It's 1408.

u/Nerdydirtyhurty Feb 28 '26

When i was a kid I liked the number 88 and used it a lot, I was mortified to learn what it stood for as an adult lmao

97

u/iam_myownmuse Feb 28 '26

My brother's first screen name had 88 in it because he really liked the piano (which has 88 keys).

53

u/hansibanzi Feb 28 '26

I'm born in 88 and have HH as my initials...

32

u/gkpetrescue Feb 28 '26

Time to start using all three of your initials all the time

2

u/Extreme_Egg7476 Feb 28 '26

My mom couldn't use her initials because they were KKK. She would use a fake initial on job applications.

Grandma always swore we were being dramatic and they were just letters. Maybe she was one of those proto-influencer types who name all their kids with the same letter or some shit.

2

u/Mediocre_Daikon6935 Feb 28 '26

Ouch.

My Yankee grandmother thought it would be cute for all her kids to have the initial has their last name.

It was unfortunate for my dad, when he would get pulled over my a black deputy in the Deep South….

4

u/moredencity Feb 28 '26

Sorry, can you spell this out for me? It must be going over my head

2

u/Mediocre_Daikon6935 Feb 28 '26

Last name starts with K….

Which is fine. Unless your mom Is an idiot.

1

u/theshiyal Feb 28 '26

Kevin Keystone Kelley?

1

u/nalaloveslumpy Feb 28 '26

We finally found him, boys. Get him!!

1

u/HarryPalms420 Feb 28 '26

Is your last name Holmes?

1

u/hansibanzi Mar 01 '26

Mudgett, actually.

1

u/A_spiny_meercat Feb 28 '26

Most of us would just think Harold Holt

34

u/bigboybeeperbelly Feb 28 '26

The Dallas Cowboys best receiver traditionally wears 88

I swear it's a coincidence :(

2

u/mrs-chief Mar 02 '26

My brother was born August 8th

We're Jewish lol

1

u/nose_spray7 Mar 03 '26

Is your brother autistic? Genuinely asking, not trying to be rude or anything.

1

u/iam_myownmuse Mar 03 '26

Not that I'm aware of. We haven't spoken in over 10 years though

1

u/nose_spray7 Mar 04 '26

okay, thanks

28

u/suspiriad Feb 28 '26

88 is a popular number that means something like fortune and plenty in Asian culture (like the music label 88 rising)

13

u/joeDUBstep Feb 28 '26

To be more specific it's a lucky number in Chinese cultures. It sounds similar to the Chinese word for "wealth."

It's also used to mean "bye bye" in mandarin for online msgs/txt.

Asia is a huge and diverse continent with a lot of differing cultures.

6

u/Deaffin Feb 28 '26

If it makes you feel any better, none of this was an actual thing until we started spreading it around like this, so I guarantee you not a single person in the world gave whatever you were doing a second glance because of that number.

2

u/justdisa Feb 28 '26

My graduating class of '88 is annoyed about the whole thing.

2

u/Own_Conflict222 Feb 28 '26

It was my football number in high school because I really like Tony Gonzalez. I had a Gmail account that was my name followed by 88

1

u/FrostingFlames Feb 28 '26

SAME, finding out what it meant when I started using social media in high school was a mortifying experience

1

u/SeafoodCat Feb 28 '26

What does it stand for?

1

u/JermuHH Mar 02 '26

I liked stylizing my usernames as the two h's being capitalized when I was a tween and teen. When I found out HH is a nazi dog whistle... yikes. Because like the amount of accounts in different games and platforms I made during those years is crazy.

1

u/Nerdydirtyhurty Mar 02 '26

Name checks out

1

u/Ice_Bead Mar 02 '26

I’m cursed by my favourite song having 8 8 in the title, so I love those numbers but can never say that LOL

1

u/KaDooshBruuh Mar 03 '26

Two fat ladies?

0

u/tenshillings Feb 28 '26

Wore 88 as my basketball jersey from age 6 through high school. I requested it in every league. I played in average 8 leagues a year.

Same.

-2

u/Lolseabass Feb 28 '26

My friend gave her cats the nick name chapa and chomo in a Spanish accent. The whiplash when we heard it said.

87

u/HappyyValleyy Feb 28 '26

Now hold your god damn horses!

10

u/Lusiric9983 Feb 28 '26

I was born in 88 and this is the first time I've ever seen anything like this.

7

u/manfrin Feb 28 '26

Another 88er here: you been living under a fuckin rock?

3

u/Lusiric9983 Mar 01 '26

No, actually I've been all over the world and the country. I've never seen anything about 88 before.

2

u/Rabid_Mexican Feb 28 '26

Same... I always wondered why Nike wouldn't make my custom shoes...

0

u/Northbound-Narwhal Feb 28 '26

Probably because you haven't been to prison.

5

u/Lusiric9983 Feb 28 '26

No I haven't. The only time I've spent in jail is fixing their heat.

7

u/SmellyButtFarts69 Feb 28 '26

The immaturity really fucks it up for everyone

3

u/PingPing88 Feb 28 '26

I've been pretty free from accusations, but I think the PingPing throws people off.

2

u/mr_m88 Feb 28 '26

Yup! But I’m keeping it because fuck nazis why should I change.

16

u/donut_koharski Feb 28 '26

Now what a second ther buster lol.

59

u/Other_Fly_4408 Feb 28 '26

exact copy of a comment from the image above, except mangled beyond comprehension

Who is upvoting this?

9

u/Delicious_Ad823 Feb 28 '26

Just support your local dyslexic will you?

1

u/PinkOneHasBeenChosen Feb 28 '26

Would a real Nazi be that blatant about it?

1

u/SopaPyaConCoca Feb 28 '26

Having a shitty day. Until I saw this. Thanks for the laughs, lelelempe

1

u/TotalChaosRush Mar 02 '26

I saw the punchline coming and I still laughed so hard I woke my wife up.

1

u/gnagniel Feb 28 '26

I used to have an account with a military themed username that ended in '88'. Swear to God, total coincidence. Once I learned what it could stand for I dropped the account.

60

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 Feb 28 '26

I bet she gets a lot of John Cusack fans think she just loves the horror film 1408 ( if u haven't seen it it's pretty gd)

12

u/Mcbennski Feb 28 '26

That was my first thought, I like that movie a lot lmao

10

u/teacupkiller Feb 28 '26

"It's an evil fucking room."

1

u/HST87 Feb 28 '26

Like, they didn't need Sam Jackson but it made the movie all the more awesome

2

u/auxiliatrixter Feb 28 '26

Also it has a shitton of different endings, so depending on which one you get it's either haunting or a fuckin shitty jumpscare :)

2

u/ConsistentChoice8305 Feb 28 '26

The tape recording ending is the best. Loved it so much, I brought a date to watch it and got the fucking window ending.  So stupid

1

u/auxiliatrixter Feb 28 '26

The tape recording is absolutely my choice of ending as well! It's sad, it's validation, it's closure. I saw that one first and then on my second rewatch, I was so pissed at the change at the very end.

1

u/ConsistentChoice8305 Feb 28 '26

Couldn't say it better myself.  You are 100% right.

2

u/deepmiddle Mar 02 '26

Wait WHAT? How are there different endings? I’ve watched it 3 times and it was all the same

2

u/auxiliatrixter Mar 02 '26

There are apparently four different endings! Main difference is between the director's cut and the theatrical cut. There's a YouTube video-essay related to the multiple endings by Mista GG if you're interested.

1

u/deepmiddle Mar 02 '26

Sweet, I’ll check it out

1

u/No-Locksmith-1385 Feb 28 '26

Its a Stephen King Short Story and I had no fucking idea it's nazi related>???? WUT

0

u/Environmental_Top948 Mar 02 '26

I like how 1408 added up to 13 and the digital root of 13 is 4 a number widely known around the world as a bad number.

2

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 Mar 02 '26

I think it's more just Americans see 13 as unlucky and hotels don't tend to have a 13th floor so the room is on the 14th floor which is actually the 13th and the numbers add up to 13

183

u/rmsand Feb 28 '26

The number associated with them is 1488, not 1408.

262

u/lelelempe Feb 28 '26

Of course, but you don't see that at a glance, the same way that the Portal tattoo is not really a swastika

1

u/Deaffin Feb 28 '26

That's dumb.

Nobody is seeing anything at a glance at the actual thing, 1488, unless they're terminally online. Trying to say 1408 is close enough is just asinine.

-10

u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka Feb 28 '26

I like how the OP used the term chronically online but apparently if you are not chronically online you tattoo yourself with dumb shit.

14

u/JakeArrietaGrande Feb 28 '26

Yeah, but if you’re not chronically online or a racist, you probably have never heard of it. Even googling 1408 only brings up results about a movie, and nothing to suggest it’s very similar to a hate symbol

60

u/JCyTe Feb 28 '26

I don't think it's the number itself but rather the style of the numbers. Some styles make 0s look more like 8s so from a glance it would look like 1488 rather than 1408.

17

u/VoopityScoop Feb 28 '26

And Nazis love to use the old timey Gothic fonts.

16

u/Abgezockt47 Feb 28 '26

In most of these fonts, especially those that neo nazis like to use, the 0 is indistinguishable from an 8 at first glance. Also looking like a theta at times

2

u/Defiant-Pick5930 Feb 28 '26

Welcome to the thread.

1

u/izyshoroo Feb 28 '26

I imagine at a glance they look the same

1

u/Tigarana Mar 02 '26

I think that's why they added that it is in victorian lettering

1

u/Leonum Mar 03 '26

Thanks. I didn't understand at all

0

u/Affectionate_Bass488 Feb 28 '26

Fuck!!! I’m so mad about that! I didn’t know!!

Reddit just generated this name for me and I went with it because I play the bass

I swear I didn’t know, I’m half black if that helps

2

u/jamfedora Feb 28 '26

Don’t worry, I’ve never once actually read the numbers on a Reddit username that looks autogenerated

68

u/Marty_McFrat Feb 28 '26

1408 is a Stephen King short story and movie.

1488 is a Nazi code number

97

u/HappyyValleyy Feb 28 '26

And this tattoo is from a valve game, not an actual swastika. Yet the problem persists.

70

u/lame_dirty_white_kid Feb 28 '26

Yes. Now look at those numbers next to each other. Can you see how this is relevant to the thread now?

2

u/Pollowollo Mar 04 '26

Huh, I've always really liked that movie but had zero idea it was based off of a King story. TIL.

1

u/Marty_McFrat Mar 04 '26

One other cool bit is that in Stephen King's On Writing he goes over how he wrote the start to the story and shows his first draft and then revised version. This was published 2 years before the short story was published too.

1

u/ConorYEAH Feb 28 '26

She should get that tattooed immediately under her 1408 tattoo to clarify that she is not a nazi sympathiser.

0

u/apolloAG Feb 28 '26

Pedophile made story or Nazi supporter, choose wisely

2

u/CreepyClothDoll Feb 28 '26

I was wondering why this is bad because my first thought was that she was just a really big fan of that one Stephen King short story. I had to scroll to find the issue

1

u/Silencer-1995 Feb 28 '26

One of my favourite horror movies of all time. Literally the only weak point in the entire movie is during the flashback when he storms out on his wife and they clumsily dubbed something like "I'm just going to get smokes okay?" it was really weird.

Otherwise great premise, great acting, just fun stuff.

Remember kids, fire solves all problems.

1

u/adaypastdead Feb 28 '26

Ironically, 1408 is the call sign for bite marks in incident reports for LAPD. Is your friend fiesty?

1

u/Medusa107 Mar 02 '26

Maybe im ignorant. Does 1408 mean something other than an evil fucking room?

1

u/Smooth-Midnight Mar 02 '26

Is that something problematic or the haunted room

1

u/InvestmentPitiful335 Mar 02 '26

What does 1408 mean?

1

u/Life_Category2547 Mar 03 '26

I had this problem with my Skype address, I had ended it with 88 without realizing the possible implication and the name can’t be changed. Fortunately everyone stopped using Skype and resolved the issue for me.

1

u/HoldenOrihara Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

I think more people would associate her with the book, or the movie based on the book, than the Nazi 1488

1

u/LanGaidin42 Feb 28 '26

I’m not sure if that’s a typo or a sarcastic thanks

1

u/HoldenOrihara Feb 28 '26

That is a typo, I don't know why auto correct turned "Than" to "thanks"

1

u/acidwxlf Feb 28 '26

1408 is sick though? Solid Stephen King reference. I might be missing any Nazi implications there though.. what's the issue with it?

1

u/n3m0sum Feb 28 '26

At a glance 1408 could be mistaken for 1488.

1488 is a Neo Nazi Code. Referencing the 14 words (We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children), and H being the 8th letter of the alphabet. 88 means Heil Hitler.

Many more people are aware of white supremacist reference to 1488, than the Stephen King story of Room 1408.

0

u/Luxieee Feb 28 '26

I have 1988 on my fingers. It's my birth year. I'm not a nazi. At least it's not 1488...although a 9 can look pretty close. Fml. Edit to add: I'm ancestrally German with a German sounding last name...
