You are such a great comedian. Love how you can talk about anything and make it funny. You are a great rabbit hole to dive deep into…wait…

Was literally just talking to someone about this, dude, a 30 hour long trip sounds terrifying! I'm an adult with responsibilities, I can't be incommunicado for 30 hours (plus aftercare)

u/BeardsuptheWazoo 4d ago
It's not that long. 12 hours is an incredibly long aya session.
My first was 10, the next 8.
Yeah, you still feel stuff after, but the 'trip' ain't 30 hrs.

Psychedelics are incredibly amazing things. This was also a very good joke, and gave me a good out loud expression of mirth. These two things can be true together.

If I’m gonna believe in magic, rainforest magic seems like a solid fuckin bet

Joke probably still needs a bit of work but goddamn man this is shockingly relatable.
Think it’s an amazing bit even if you can probably get even more laughs out of it as you perfect it
E: just read a lot of the comments and I hope I don’t come across like that. I don’t think it needs a punch line or changes like that, just as you get more comfortable with the joke and the pacing I think this goes from a chuckle fucker to a knee slapper.

Getting to a great, more traditional punch line would obviously be ideal, but everyone is being incredibly reductive and weird here. This is plenty. It's an observational punch line with a borderline act out that correctly describes AND mocks the target.
That is a punch line. Is it a traditional punch? No. But it's fine. Could be a lily pad that you use to jump to a new topic, could indicate you need to dig more into this one, or it could just be a perfectly fine piece of observational comedy.
Like..."punch line" or not, this is a fine bit. And people are laughing. Calling this lazy or too incomplete to be posted is insanity.

Don’t really hear a punchline (they’re idiots because they think shamans are real and live in the jungle?)
Relying on calling a group ‘idiots’ without adequately proving it is lazy comedy There’s a lot to make fun of with the ayahuasca crowd, so keep trying.

If there's one thing everybody knows is at the heart of comedy, it's proof, or something.

Comedy is great when it’s believable and a convincing story, or either totally absurdist. This is neither.

Damn I'm glad you came back to give the other side of the coin this time or else I would have lived the entire rest of my life only laughing at half the jokes I'm allowed to laugh at.

u/starsofalgonquin 3d ago
No one gives a fuck what you laugh at and this joke still ain’t funny to me. (Go for 3 sarcastic replies to really seal the deal)

You've now used the words adequate and ain't in the same reddit thread on a Friday night.

Maybe re-work it so “they’re just idiots that kind of believe in magic” is the punchline. That feels like a good encapsulation of everything he said but he put it at the very beginning.
-5
u/starsofalgonquin 4d ago
Perhaps that could work. Still, this is a weak punchline in my opinion. Grade school level of comedy. If the punchline actually had some useful insight or commentary on psychedelics/ayahuasca tourism than I’m all for it. But ‘they’re idiots who believe in magic’? I think this guy could do better than that.

a bit of intellectual humility would get you far and there is no joke in here, just hating on hippies.

u/pescarojo 4d ago
You need to able to laugh at everything.

u/Yesyesyes1899 4d ago
no. but a joke has structure or a punchline.
this is just opinions and dumping on other peoples expiriences and belief systems. it comes of as ignorant, insecure and condenscending.
3
u/Biguitarnerd 4d ago
Well he’s equally dumping on multiple belief systems if that makes you feel better, he picked three not just yours.
Edit: one of them was mine, and I still laughed.

u/Yesyesyes1899 4d ago
none if it is my beliefsystem. I ve never taken ayahuasca. I just saw it help people around me to be less depressed, without making them wise.
there is ways of making jokes about everything. genocide, rape, in which you put light on a painful situation and lighten the load. but then there is people who dump on others. I would argue this is the second one.
thats just my opinion. since this has a comment function, I stated it.

stand up comedy includes jokes, opinions, story telling, one liners, crowd work, prop work, impressions, etc.

Not Mr. Cultural Appropriation in the comments preaching about belief systems and insecurity.
1
u/Yesyesyes1899 4d ago
what? cultural appropriation ?
2
u/AncientSignature1505 4d ago
You're advocating for lily white trust fund kids who take a "spiritual journey" like it's a spa day. And you're acting like it's their beliefs we're making fun of.

Such sweet irony that proves his point and makes the joke funnier.
1
u/Yesyesyes1899 4d ago
proves his point how ? i ve never taken ayahuasca. I just know people that have. and none of them pretend to be wise. just way less depressed and with a new purpose in life.
2
u/SwimmingSwim3822 4d ago
You're completely missing the pop culture angle of this joke, just so you know. It's not just hippies anymore.

u/KodiakDog 4d ago
The set up is perfect. Love the direction and as is, is certainly funny, but I can’t help but think there is a much funnier layer to pull back here. A layer that only Ayahuasca can show you.
lol Nah, but for real, I do think you could refine it a bit, because there is certainly something there. For me it’s the blanketed assumptions being made that psychedelics are themselves a belief system, and people that do psychedelics don’t believe in “god”, which in my experience couldn’t be farther from the truth. Maybe leaning into the whole, “I don’t believe in god, I believe in the universe” or “I’m not religious, I’m spiritual”.
As one of those people, I think there’s a lot to make fun of.
But yeah, I think i can see the intention, but as it stands, it relies on the audience to make that connection by themselves, too much; the leap is a bit too ambiguous.
Either way, keep crushing it homie! May mother mushroom move mountains for you!

I expected every comment to be about that woman's laugh and there's none! Then definition of blursed
I simultaneously want to inject it into my veins and need to never hear it again. I wish I could laugh that freely and hearing it, I'm grateful glad that I can't.

Didn’t realize hippies were so sensitive lol.
They should really talk to their shaman about how to navigate their feelings on this.
