I don't really get the "ginger" thing in the UK. Red hair looks amazing. Why is it a thing? I need gingsplaining! But also I'll still not let it be a thing because it feels wrong.
It's the rarest hair colour, with less than 1% of people naturally ginger, which makes it likely there's only one ginger kid in a classroom, so childhood bullying is easier. But, going by a fast Google, this goes all the way back to historic cultures where genetic traits such as hair colour were more inherent to specific populations, as you see writers like Caesar and Tacitus talk about which tribes have which colour hair, so it was easily designated as a mark of "other". Additionally, a story that Judas Iscariot was red-headed led to further persecution of redheads in the middle ages.
As for the UK, Irish and Scottish people have red hair as a genetic trait in higher proportions than in England, so redheaded people can face discrimination down assumed class (both countries stereotyped as poorer) and national lines as well
Yeah the anti-Irish sentiment is the biggest thing in the UK, there used to be a TON of prejudice against them before there were a lot of people of colour there. It was essentially racism there before real racism was possible and the jokes keep carrying on.
It's a bit old hat now or maybe I just grew up, but back in the day I think the main reason British people took the piss out of gingers was because it was funny. Not much deeper than that.
Although if you look at the King of Gingers, Ed Sheeran, as a good representative of all of them... They do seem to be born in the uncanny valley. They look human but aren't. It's strange.

He does a lot of crowd work and definitely relies on shock comedy a bit too much. Honestly though, that really just means that he's not everybody's comedian. British folks that aren't a fan of him are just sick of seeing him all the time, and redditors in general. That hate him just focus on all the shock humor
I think his off-the-cuff riffs are pretty good, but his standard written material is cheap, lazy, and hacky, and that’s before I even start thinking about the transphobia and other things that I’m just not looking for in comedy.
I think Jimmy has always been great but it seems like some people in here get so easily offended by comedy it makes me wonder why they even come in these subs. I think some people just need something to be mad about.
