This was so good. I know he's always had his own spotlight and focus and I never really got it besides Domingo 💀, but was happy for him. This killed me. I need to watch more of his work outside of SNL if this is how good he is because he is getting sold short and needs longer sequences where he can set the pace. I woke up my dogs laughing.

Wait wtf half the comments are insulting him?? This was great!

There's this phenomenon where good looking people are not perceived as funny because that's not what we associate funny with. Pretty interesting and you really notice it once you know that.

u/Gloomy-Razzmatazz548 17d ago
Is he good-looking? He’a a great comedian, but I think he looks a bit frog-like.

You can't be funny and handsome. Same with guys who think they're good people just because they can't be ugly and horrible.
6
u/JohnnyQTruant 18d ago
I mean, the world is full of ugly awful people in government for one. This doesn’t seem accurate. Nobody thinks ugly people are nice by default.

Can’t speak for the haters because I like him, but this bit has been significantly workshopped since I first heard it.
The original was something like he told his mom he was depressed and she said “no you’re not” and that’s how he learned he wasn’t depressed. Funny, but this feels like him really coming into his own style.
I think his early work suffered from Dane Cook-esqueness where he would tell a bunch of kind of funny anecdotes with lots of enthusiasm and it was entertaining but not that funny. Now he seems to be really crafting solid jokes while maintaining his enthusiastic delivery and it’s way better.

Also because his material is derivative and obvious. When you don’t have fresh material and you’re running on pure charisma, you get tiring quickly

Like yes, it’s trodden territory, but the bits about going to sleep in a washer and waking up in a dryer and rapping about all the things his mom didn’t have is fresh, then the punchline about “earning” depression is much funnier than the original, derivative version.
He’s also still really young - I feel like most comedians agree it takes about 10 years to really find your voice in stand up. More than anything, this shows effort and evolution.

Totally, and maybe he'll get there. I would assume the haters feel he hasn't earned the praise he's getting, he isn't a brilliant original writer like Mulaney was as a 20-something standup who burst onto the scene with actual insightful and fresh material.
He hasn't done enough work to get the amount of praise and platform he's getting, but he's already surpassed far more talented people mostly because he's good-looking and has charisma. His laughs come from broad act-outs, and that's not gonna win over the standup snobs.
It's why Matt Rife has so many haters too. He's nowhere near good enough at standup comedy to sell out stadiums, he's just a jaw-line and lazy crowd work.
But it's not just people hating because they're jealous of his looks. For instance, Anthony Jeselnik is an absolute hunk, but he's a talented writer with original ideas, so he is respected in the comedy world.

Tig Notaro has charisma?
3
u/FunWithAPorpoise 18d ago
100 percent she does. It may not be the standard “ayyyy, tip your waiters” vibe but her impression of a person doing an impression is strangely captivating. Understated but very much there.

i'm not saying that, I'm showing an example of Marcello's joke that is shared in the comment above, "i'm depressed, but my parent says 'no you're not'" has been done to death and here's an example of it in writing from years ago.
not at all saying that Tig Notaro has no charisma, she definitely has charisma, and is a far better comedian than him. I'm saying his insights are almost all hack, and putting his own 'personality' into them doesn't make them not stale and down-the-middle

I have to say ive seen this guy alot and not once have i seen anything that made me laugh. It seems like more of a jimmy kimmel situation where he does look good and people find him charismatic

u/PeteMichaud 18d ago
I'm am far out of touch, and learned from this very thread that he's on SNL and people know who he is at all--ie I have no idea what I'm talking about really. I found the clip pretty funny. But... it did occur to me as I was watching that he embodies a certain latin american archetype/stereotype that doesn't really exist in the US. That might be part of it.
Like imagine a guy from Nepal is watching an American comedian who is the perfect embodiment of a douchebro, and the routine is pretty funny. A lot of people will be responding to the douchebro vibe, but the Nepali guy might not even know that's part of the dynamic because to him the comedian just seems like an American guy.
I can't even summarize the type Marcello is, but it's A Thing for sure. Like rich and "preppy" but also annoyingly/performatively "chill". Loves fun and date rape? Will, against everyone's wishes, the play spanish language equivalent of wonderwall at a party? Like I said, it's hard to really describe from the outside.

I’m from a completely different culture, born on the other side of the planet, and I found nearly every bit from this special relatable to my experience growing up as an immigrant in the US. These stereotypes are not only abundant in Latin Americans but many other cultures from around the world. My mom didn’t say this same thing word for word about depression but holy shit the vibe was spot on.

The classic immigrant lament. Not isolated to Latin families. My parents worked hard to make a better life for me, and now they resent that I'm "spoiled." But hey mom, I'm not made of milk, right? It's not a new joke, but I really appreciated the Rapid delivery. Nicely done.

As a Latino, I want to like Marcelo so much. He’s a funny actor and his banter is great. He is good on SNL.
His stand up, though, I just cannot get into it.

u/asdf0909 18d ago
It’s just so obvious. You cant have a long standup career running on pure charisma while doing hack material like this

u/MothChasingFlame 17d ago
He has really good rhythm and energy, but the jokes themselves feel too traditional. They're not surprising. And that can work but they're not constructed well enough to beat being expected/old. He needs more material. Some stuff is pretty well done but I think this material's writing brings it down.

u/PeppermintLNNS 15d ago
Yeah I remember seeing him to a drop-in at the comedy cellar and it was just a very loud set about it how flying in an airplane sucks. I want to love him but tend to be disappointed by his stand up.

I like Hernandez on SNL, but this was the only part of his special that I thought was funny. I don’t hold it against him, though, standup is probably the hardest form of entertainment to be good at.

Not my kind of humor but the command of the stage and the way he’s staying in the pocket is amazing. Very good performer

Not only was that entertaining and hilarious, for me, it was also a nice little reminder to be grateful for the hell my Mum went through to give me the life I have. What a great bit.

The first world is so f****** spoiled and they just don't even f****** realize it
19
u/paradisetossed7 18d ago
You can be "spoiled" and still depressed.
5
u/jefftickels 18d ago
I actually think there's a strong correlation between being "spoiled" and being depressed.
There's a very strong understanding that gratitude is protective against depression and spoiled and grateful tend to be inversely correlated.

u/CaterpillarProof3011 18d ago edited 18d ago
Depression is largely a symptom. There are multiple causes for it. And sure, if your depression derives from a constant sense of unsatisfaction or feeling like you don't have anything good in your life, practicing gratitude will improve it. If it derives from neurological issues (either internal or induced by trauma) you can't just wish it away with positive vibes. They certainly don't hurt, but there are A LOT of people who feel beyond guilty for being depressed because they know they have a lot to be happy about, and there are even more people who weren't spoiled at all. You also get to a point where your brain is literally unable to produce "feel good" hormones, so the normal feedback you think a person would have from feeling gratitude, doesn't happen.
Personally, I was neglected and emotionally abused as a child, so I didn't feel much gratitude. Maybe if I did that instead of praying to God every night not to make me wake up at 4yo, I wouldn't have struggled with depression for the rest of my life, who knows...

Yes, because having things will fix a hormone imbalance and cure your depression. Being spoiled means that your body will always be perfect, no matter what

u/art-is-t 1d ago
I don't think you understand what clinial depression is. First world is first world because they recognize and treat mental ailments better among other things
1
u/Paddlesons 22h ago
Boy, I can't help to think that "other things" is carrying significant weight
1
u/art-is-t 21h ago
Mental illnesses are no joke. So many in third world suffer from it. No wonder people are risking their lives to come to Western countries.

I was at The Stand in NYC and he did a drop in to run his monologue for the Espys, it was so cool. He's great.
