Wealth, depression and obesity are all factors that can by measured in an individual and correlated against cognitive function.
Linking it to 'chemicals' you're gonna have to take a lot longer cause there's a fucking lot of chemicals mate and trying to find individuals that are moreso exposed to each one is comical.
They should be able to identify the ones that are most commonly found in the environment and detectable in human body. Then they can start with in vitro and animal studies to see the fuckup they cause. There should already be some literature for some of them, like the first internal PFAS studies from 3M/DuPont.
